What exactly is this? I mean, I know it's a musical version of Alice in Wonderland with Meryl Streep (my secret love ), but if it isn't taken from a live show, then why film it on a stage, or in a stage-like environment??

It was done on broadway, but they redid it and put it on as a TV movie...which is the version you're watching now. :)
