Just wondering how you know the age of your turtle...did you have him for most of his life? Do you know how to tell? I'm Curious to know how old mine is
@Gorgo Sorry for your loss, he looked like a happy turtle. Their lifespan is generally 40-50 years with some recorded to be 110+ in the wild. It is almost impossible to gauge the exact age unless cataloged at birth. Growth is unpredictable and can vary from year to year, but as a general rule they grow the fastest during the first few years then start to slow down gradually after that.
I have an Eastern male that is similar on my channel, he is around 7 years and his name is Toby.
Beautiful male turtle! I have a female I just found. She was about to cross a busy street & we Love her. We named her Shanaynay Bubble-Lulu. I am thinking of breeding her but don't know much about it yet.
i have a question...can two box turtles be together even if hey arent the same type of box turtle for example eatsern and three toed box turtels....can they be put together?
I have 5 Three-Toed & 3 Gulf Coast Box Turtles in my turtle yard & have had a mix of these two species together for years with no problem.Awhile back I found one of my little male 3-toes mating with my big female Gulf Coast.Three weeks later she laid a clutch of eggs.I have the area covered with a little cage now so if they hatch they won't get lost in the yard or eaten by birds. They get along in a large outdoor enclosure but I don't know how they'd act in a small indoor enclosure.
These guys are becoming rare in NJ. Totally due to over development, no way I'm buying into the Wildlife Rehabilitation people are saying is due to over collecting. Case in point, there is a wooded area with turtles, it's torn up, bull-dozed and now a Home Depot stands there. Yet, when I walk around the Home Depot, I don't see box turtles in the aisles, where did they go?? They were destroyed by the construction of the Home Depot!!!! Wake up! @Dimunic You have to watch them though. Mine acts like he's not gonna move at all until I look away and then he's gone. I've lost mine twice because he buried himself under a bunch of dead leaves.
I saved a beautiful Box Turtle today on the road. I have a large fenced in yard in which I "dig out" proofed a few years ago for a German Sheperd that has sinced passed. basically the perimeter of the yard is secured by 3 foot deep chicken wire. I'm currently in the process of building him a wonderful habitat throughout my back yard. I can only hope my experience can be a fraction of enjoyment the maker of this video had with Woody. Excellent video, thanks for posting.
In most cases.Eastern Box Males have Red Eyes/Females have brown. There are other ways you can tell,I don't know those. If both are male, keep them away from each other. The bigger one will kill the little one.
Ok. We have a garden, my parents said the tomatos will attract Eastern box turtles. I was wondering if this was true. I live in PA are you allowed to keep it if you find one?
I don't know about the tomatoes. Could be. Woody was found on the road in McMurray,Pa roughly 26 years ago. I do not think your supposed to keep them however, being that their habitats are being destroyed and they are so uncommon. You may want to keep it.(Find another, breed and release)
If you do. Be sure to read up on what they need and you'll have a cool, attractive, tame, friend for many, many years. They can live 50-150 years captive. Don't put 2 males together. They'll hurt each other.
My mother found him when I was a kid. Woody is lonely too. He's had Turtle friends but doesn't get along well with other male turtles. I've looked for a female friend.female Eastern box are hard to come by.
lmao thats funny i have a female and cant find a male and i live in new england and they dont just roam around up her i found mine when driving through kentucky we almost hit it with our camper =[ but shes lonely she did have a friend it was a northern fence lizard but it escaped =[ and now i want it to have a male friend =] i feel bad sor her poor baby her names bubbles shes really old and very kind
Maybe you can help me. I found a baby eastern box turtle, and it's eyes were super swollen. I have made an adequate habitat for it, and now his eyes are still swollen, but not as bad. Any home remedies for it? It's still a hatchling, when you get it wet you can see where the yolk was recently absorbed. Also, it won't eat. Any help?
Oh man,. I got lucky with Woody getting better.I lost Gamera and tetsuo. Those who gave them to me had brought them to me much too late. It was winter and they hadn't eaten in months. Take it to the Vet I know times are tuff but they'll help. They can give you better advice than I can. I never had a hatchling myself. Make some calls to local vets. not all vets can advise you on turtles. They may have to inject it with anibiotics to make it better. Sorry, that's all I can tell ya.
I have been bitten twice by box turtles. I was transporting one in a small cooler. He kept opening the cooler, so I had to hold the lid closed with my hand. He opened it up again and bit me on the palm. Not hard, thank goodness. He was gentle.
Another I was taking her to her outside pen after cleaning her shell. I put her in my robe pocket. I have done this before. When I pulled her she had bitted the inside of the pocket. She wouldn't let go. I had to take off the robe and leave it in her pen.
do you know why they are becoming less common??! because people like you own them as pets! these turtle's wild populations are diminishing rapidly. a large part of this is due to the capture of these turtles for the pet trade! The only reason you should ever own one of these turtles is to rehabilitate it for release back into it's natural habitat. do not be selfish, and resist the urge to own these beautiful animals
I have sought a female for him for some time now to continue his bloodline and repopulate his species.Hatch/release
I think he's better off with me. Most human beings suck.
They ruin their habitat by building houses and they run them over with a car. I'm protecting him/them. Don't turn this into me being selfish. If he was put back in his natural habitat, someone or something would happen to him. He's been my pet for over 25 years and content with the habitat I provide for him.
Wake up!!!! They are becoming uncommon because of OVERDEVELOPMENT, not over collecting. Once there is a woods and turtles, then a mall, and where did the turtles go??? Into the mall? I don't think so, how about under the wheels of the construction equipment that built the mall! Every box turtle I find will be given to a turtle collector to keep it safe the rest of it's life, rather than have to dodge cars and construction equipment.
I had one that was very young. I took care of her for a while and then let her go in a nice meadow with plenty of others her kind. I just now came across a very old one, she looks a little dehydrated so I've put her in an outside pen with a small relaxing pool and tomato plants. She is very shy but my nephew misses hannah (the first one) so since she is old and there isn't a place near to take her, we will keep her. He named her Abbigale.
you should release this turtle back into the wild! it is illegal and plain wrong to take an animal from the wild. by doing so you effect the balance of the turtles ecosystem. and i challenge you to prove that this turtle was dehydrated! do not be selfish at the cost of these animals survival.
that turtle wouldnt sruvive an hour n the wild any more he haded the turtle for 22yrs it like saying we should throw u back to the wild n hofuly u survive
Turts are adaptable... and they can go a *long* time without food. If he was put in a decent place he would do well.
I'm not sure what the ethical thing to do is. I've collected more than I should in my life, and things have died under my care. I've learned a lot though. Lately, I've been at zoos in charge of expensive, rare, and endangered species. I've been doing pretty well. I owe that skill to some of the natives I've cared for. I still can't say it was the right thing to do. I'm not sure.
Has it ever had a traumatic moment? Dogs/cats around?
how long have you had it? Do you handle it often?
Try breathing or blowing gently near it's nose. (someone once told me that is how they get to know you,by your scent)
Have it on your lap a lot. When he or she comes out, don't make sudden movements, let them smell you and know you aren't a threat. That's all I can tell you except set it in a shallow tub of room temperature water in case it's dehydrated.
was that turtle always white or did it loose some of its color because of its age. It looks awesome with white. I have 3 turtles which are a mom dad and a son.
No,not really. He was a bit unhealthy around the time I did this clip and the Camera kinda made him looked more washed out looking. Thanks. Did you post a video of your turtles?
Thanks, but no,it's a male. Typical of Eastern box Males have Red eyes, most females have brown or reddish brown.
I know, He's displayed his nuts before & I've see his thing.
He is a good turtle but is very aggressive when other male turtles are around. That's why his beak got broken. I'll try the tomato sometime. I got mine back in 1986. He was fully grown when I got him. Still doing well.
Woody has always been very calm, tame, and relatively friendly for the 24 or so years I have had him.He has never bit me on purpose. If he ever did,he was in pain from a toe nail that was hanging by a root.. I just didn't know he would become aggressive to other Male turtles. He used to have a female friend years ago. She was the aggressor then.
She would nibble on his back toes while he tried to eat his dinner.
Yeah, north alabama easterns. They are all nice to me, but the males aren't nice to other turtles.
I caught a male at my house, later I caught a female. She was missing some of her front claws. Later, the male and female mated. She was then missing more of her front claws. I'm pretty sure they met in the wild before because of that. Those males just think that biting is extra sexy I guess. He never did that to my other girls though. Perhaps she wouldn't cooperate or something.
Try Worms (nightcrawlers),carrots, watermelon, strawberries, corn, tuna, ground turkey/chicken. If it won't eat any of what I suggest then there is a problem and you need to take it to the vet.
Worms are probably the best thing you could to feed it.
Woody had attacked another turtle while I was at work and broke off his lower beak while trying to bite the other one.
At that time I didn't know males couldn't be around other males. I nursed him back to health & his beak is growing back. I know,it does look a bit weird. He's been to the vet for an unrelated incident.(eye infection) The vet said he's in good health & the mandible will grow back in time.
hey i was wondering, i found an eastern box turtle the other day and he seems to hav an ear infection his left cheeck is relle swollen and i did some resaerch and i think that mis wat it is so i was wondering being that hes wild it will heel on its own or wood he die? bcuz i relle dont want to bring him to a vet bcuz i dont hav the ,money and hes not a pet but im worried about him cuz im turtle lover lol any advise or home remidies wood be grately apreciated. thank you.
I hate to say this but... it's not good. You should call local vets near you and explain this. They would know better than I.
Personally,I think it will die if not treated. I had one many years ago that had that issue from when I found her. Back then,I didn't know about that ear issue and thought it was just how the females looked. Try to do something. Good luck!
I dont know much about turtles. I'm assuming you know. What's the name of a turtle that has round shape things on its shell? those round things look like they are sticking out of its shell. I have only seen those in the aquarium. I hope you know which ones im talking about.
This is super late from my previous question. Not so long ago i went to the aquarium and the turtle i was talking about is called "mata mata turtle" They look weired. A few people have videos on here of the matamata turtles.
i have an eastern box turtle and i saved him from a train i found him on the rr tracks. im so happy i found him. now hes happy in his little paridies aqarium
The end message... If I see a turtle I'll literally stop, pull over, go out in the middle of traffic and put it in the woods. Glad someone else feels the same way.
i live in nj and i fouind a baby box turtle in my backyard so i helped it fed it gave it water and plenty of space to walk but now that its getting closer to winter i did the best and i put it in front of god and prayed before i let it go in the woods near by my house
What an awesome creature. His shell is beautiful and he looks so well taken care of. I have an Eastern Painted turtle, 3 Eastern muds and a three-toed boxie. I love the message you put at the end of the video.
I'm in NJ, in June I rescued a box turtle seconds after it was sideswiped by a car. Vet cleaned wounds, x-rayed it, had broken leg under shell which he said would not impact the turtles walk (she did walk normal) and it also had 7 eggs. I turned it over to a rehabilitator to care for it and hopefully get it to lay the eggs. How did he lose part of his lower beak? I saw on Emergency vets where Dr. Fitzgerald had a dentist make a prosthetic lower beak for a tortoise, it was incredible!
At the time...I did not know males can not be together. I came home from work and found Woody had busted his beak off Tetsuos shell...(trying to bite him) I was so upset, sad, and scared for my little buddy. I thought he was done for. The beak is like a finger nail and grows back. Just takes time. I nursed him back to health. He's doing great now. Sadly,Tetsuo got sick and passed away last year.
oh i feel bad for you:(. but can you keep 3 male turtles together? Only they are baby turtles 1 year old and they live in water? Well if you want to know the kind they are i can tell you one is a snapping turtle, softshell turtle, and red ear slider.
I had a few box turtles myself... all of them died thout. How do you feed them.
I think box turtles are fucking ninjas dude. one min there and they are not its sweet but I it took me a week to find them. I had this one turtle name Corron she ran away. I miss her.
I suppose I've been lucky Woody has been with me for so long...(over 20 years)
I think the number 1 thing is you don't put them in a confined space like a tank...let them free rome...just make sure they don't get hurt. make their area is safe. Make sure they have plenty of water...and feed them regularly.
salmonella? most or all reptiles can spread Salmonella...just don't lick your fingers after touching them. Wash your hands after you handle them and you'll not get it....
Oh,you bet !! Woody is doing much better !! He was having a rough time when I made this short !! Keep in mind... he is 34 years old ! they can live from 50 to 100 or more. No joke !! Male Eastern Box have Red eyes, Female of the breed have brown eyes. I'm so glad he's O.K. now !!
I'd be careful not to get them to hot...they might cook under to much heat. I don't know to much about that. Maybe find some pete-moss and put them in that with the light.... I think they are becoming extinct due to construction and humans driving them from their natural habitat. But maybe your right too. enviremental reason can be playing a role in making their eggs more fragile.
box turtles are VERY HARD TO FIND!!! Im in a 3 year drought! I live in Rockland county NY and been searching for box turtles in the early morning and after rain storms, with no luck!
A healthy one eats every day... If there is a problem...try getting some gel
vitamin A and carefully squirting some into his or her mouth... then put them into a tub of room temperture/luke warm water. Feed it some canned Tuna (in water not vegtable oil) They love it once they eat it once.
Hey, Thanks for the tip. He's doing alot better now. I was so worried I'd loose him. I have been busting vitamin A gels into his mouth hoping it will help him get better. It has. He's back to eating again...still have to hand feed...but that should be expected being that he lost most of his lower beak. I suppose in time it will grow back.
If your turtle is still alive you need to put a little peroxide in the break. Keep it clean. Feed him very soft food. Feed him wet cat or dog food...not chunks. Never mix males Box Turtles together. They are territorial and will seriously injure one another as you have discovered. Try not to move him around too much until he heals. Stress of any kind should be avoided now. Good luck!
I loved your video. One of the nicest ones I've seen here. I hope Woody stays well. I think mashing the food is a good idea and then wiping his beak off afterwards to keep it clean. Take care... :)
I've been giving him lots of water, offering him food...praying...let nature take it's coarse. He'll either pull through it...or not. I don't make enough money to take myself to a doctor let alone my dear turtle to the vet...this is partly why I filmed him. It's a tribute to Woody, Tetsuo,& Gamera... Trust me..I'm doing all I can to make him comfortable.
His diet consists of Nightcrawlers,Turkey breast, Strawberries,Chicken Noodle soup (soft carrots). He caused this problem with his beak. I did not know he hated the other turtle so much to where he'd bite and break his beak. He's been in bad shape ever since. I read the illness is an intestinal problem.
The broken beak is from him picking on another turtle. The other turtle went into his shell for protection...Woody bit and broke his beak off the others shell.
Box turtles life span= 50 in captivity 150 in wild "unless run over"
Sadly, Woody is very sick right now. As I stated I've had him Since I was 12...I'm 34 now...That's a long time to have a pet. Since he broke his beak ....his health is going way down hill. What were the symtoms of your dead turtle. Sneezing? bubblely mucas around mouth and nose? ? Just wondering....
Anyone reads this...have any ideas what this illness is and how to combat it?
Wow! Very nice pet! Has a face feature like an eagle, with an interesting markings on his mouth that made him like a ferociuos animal, but acts so very friendly.
Definitely can be nominated as the 5th member of TMNT. IMAO ^_^ therefore...it's 5stars ;)

@radvibes ,Yeah, you can say that. I had him since I was 12. I'm 37 now.
He was full sized when he was found on the road. We took him to the vet.
Vet said he was 11 or 12.(Back then) So he's as old as me !! LOL
They can live to be 50 to 150. I think it may be like a tree. Count the rings on one of the larger plates that make up the shell to get the age.

Hey, please help me.
I found an Eastern Box Turtle in my front yard.
His shell is all cracked and near his head the shell is actually breaking off. I put some duct tape to make it stable. Please help.

your best bet is to take it to a rehabber or vet you can contact your local DNR or Forrestry service to get some information on local rehabbers.

Any help?
BestMakeupReviews 2 years ago

I had to take off the robe and leave it in her pen.

he is beautiful
jculpweakins 3 years ago
do you know why they are becoming less common??! because people like you own them as pets! these turtle's wild populations are diminishing rapidly. a large part of this is due to the capture of these turtles for the pet trade! The only reason you should ever own one of these turtles is to rehabilitate it for release back into it's natural habitat. do not be selfish, and resist the urge to own these beautiful animals
elamena 3 years ago
I have sought a female for him for some time now to continue his bloodline and repopulate his species.Hatch/release
I think he's better off with me. Most human beings suck.
They ruin their habitat by building houses and they run them over with a car. I'm protecting him/them. Don't turn this into me being selfish. If he was put back in his natural habitat, someone or something would happen to him. He's been my pet for over 25 years and content with the habitat I provide for him.
Gorgo 3 years ago
Wake up!!!! They are becoming uncommon because of OVERDEVELOPMENT, not over collecting. Once there is a woods and turtles, then a mall, and where did the turtles go??? Into the mall? I don't think so, how about under the wheels of the construction equipment that built the mall! Every box turtle I find will be given to a turtle collector to keep it safe the rest of it's life, rather than have to dodge cars and construction equipment.

hey everyone, i was wondering if i bought a box turtle, how big do they get. or do they stay small?? please reply
TampaBayLightning17 3 years ago
I had one that was very young. I took care of her for a while and then let her go in a nice meadow with plenty of others her kind. I just now came across a very old one, she looks a little dehydrated so I've put her in an outside pen with a small relaxing pool and tomato plants. She is very shy but my nephew misses hannah (the first one) so since she is old and there isn't a place near to take her, we will keep her. He named her Abbigale.
rlslbt 3 years ago
you should release this turtle back into the wild! it is illegal and plain wrong to take an animal from the wild. by doing so you effect the balance of the turtles ecosystem. and i challenge you to prove that this turtle was dehydrated! do not be selfish at the cost of these animals survival.
elamena 3 years ago
that turtle wouldnt sruvive an hour n the wild any more he haded the turtle for 22yrs it like saying we should throw u back to the wild n hofuly u survive
kkkfag 3 years ago

Gorgo 3 years ago
ok thx i will try it out

such a nice turtle your turtle is a female. you can tell cuz of the eyes they are a little slanted.i got my turtle on June 23 2008
i have had no proplems with my turtle
but he does like to eat alot. give them tomato every 1 month.
Supersaon6 3 years ago
Thanks, but no,it's a male. Typical of Eastern box Males have Red eyes, most females have brown or reddish brown.
I know, He's displayed his nuts before & I've see his thing.
He is a good turtle but is very aggressive when other male turtles are around. That's why his beak got broken. I'll try the tomato sometime. I got mine back in 1986. He was fully grown when I got him. Still doing well.
Gorgo 3 years ago
How did the beak break happen exactly? Did they bit each other's beaks that hard?
varnonzero 3 years ago
He had bitten another turtle on the shell. It snapped off his lower beak. I nursed him back to health. It's almost completely grown back now.
I did not know at the time that Eastern box males were so aggressive to one another.
Gorgo 3 years ago
Thats an intense bite. Male box turtles aren't very friendly, thats for sure.
varnonzero 3 years ago
Woody has always been very calm, tame, and relatively friendly for the 24 or so years I have had him.He has never bit me on purpose. If he ever did,he was in pain from a toe nail that was hanging by a root.. I just didn't know he would become aggressive to other Male turtles. He used to have a female friend years ago. She was the aggressor then.
She would nibble on his back toes while he tried to eat his dinner.
Are the Turtles you have Eastern Box?
Gorgo 3 years ago
Yeah, north alabama easterns. They are all nice to me, but the males aren't nice to other turtles.
I caught a male at my house, later I caught a female. She was missing some of her front claws. Later, the male and female mated. She was then missing more of her front claws. I'm pretty sure they met in the wild before because of that. Those males just think that biting is extra sexy I guess. He never did that to my other girls though. Perhaps she wouldn't cooperate or something.
varnonzero 3 years ago
hey i wanted to no wat is a good diet for a 3 toed boxie? and how much of it should i feed him??
squirrelkiller247 3 years ago
Try Worms (nightcrawlers),carrots, watermelon, strawberries, corn, tuna, ground turkey/chicken. If it won't eat any of what I suggest then there is a problem and you need to take it to the vet.
Worms are probably the best thing you could to feed it.

hey what heating/lighting u need
lamecow21 3 years ago
Contact your local Pet store or a Vet that knows about turtles.
Woody uses Sunlight and Vitamins . I tried using a light with him. He just goes and hides in a dark place. Every turtle is
a little different just as every person is different with likes and dislikes.

thx just wonderin what vitamins and in a tank or lik a chicken wire pen cause ive seen that to

how do you care for box turtles?
i mean i got red ear slider turtles but i know how to take care of them. but how exactly do you do it with boxes?
starfox45634 3 years ago
Does he have a deformity of his mandible? It doesn't look quite right. I have both Eastern and Three-toed.
Luna810 3 years ago
Woody had attacked another turtle while I was at work and broke off his lower beak while trying to bite the other one.
At that time I didn't know males couldn't be around other males. I nursed him back to health & his beak is growing back. I know,it does look a bit weird. He's been to the vet for an unrelated incident.(eye infection) The vet said he's in good health & the mandible will grow back in time.
Gorgo 3 years ago
hey i was wondering, i found an eastern box turtle the other day and he seems to hav an ear infection his left cheeck is relle swollen and i did some resaerch and i think that mis wat it is so i was wondering being that hes wild it will heel on its own or wood he die? bcuz i relle dont want to bring him to a vet bcuz i dont hav the ,money and hes not a pet but im worried about him cuz im turtle lover lol any advise or home remidies wood be grately apreciated. thank you.
squirrelkiller247 3 years ago
I hate to say this but... it's not good. You should call local vets near you and explain this. They would know better than I.
Personally,I think it will die if not treated. I had one many years ago that had that issue from when I found her. Back then,I didn't know about that ear issue and thought it was just how the females looked. Try to do something. Good luck!

Does every box turtle always need water to swim in. Or only in bathes cuz i think i will own one. SO CUTE!
uzumakinaruto453 3 years ago
no,but they do like moisture, pete moss especially & mud. Water tub for them to drink & bath in. They are great pets. I let Woody freely
wander the apartment. An enclosed envirement is not good for them. Easy clean up when they dump on the hard floor.

I dont know much about turtles. I'm assuming you know. What's the name of a turtle that has round shape things on its shell? those round things look like they are sticking out of its shell. I have only seen those in the aquarium. I hope you know which ones im talking about.

Not sure without some visual reference. I mainly know about Eastern Box Turtles & a little about Snapping Turtles.
Did it have a long tail?If so...it's a snapper
Gorgo 3 years ago
This is super late from my previous question. Not so long ago i went to the aquarium and the turtle i was talking about is called "mata mata turtle" They look weired. A few people have videos on here of the matamata turtles.
kevinmedellin 3 years ago
Nightcrawlers,Strawberries,tuna,Chicken,Turkey,
Try shreaded carrots too.
I boil chicken with Vegtables carrots, peas,Greenbeans
& mix it together (shreading the chicken)
Woody loves it. Less meat more veg.

Fitzgerald had a dentist make a prosthetic lower beak for a tortoise, it was incredible!
b55k57 4 years ago
At the time...I did not know males can not be together. I came home from work and found Woody had busted his beak off Tetsuos shell...(trying to bite him) I was so upset, sad, and scared for my little buddy. I thought he was done for. The beak is like a finger nail and grows back. Just takes time. I nursed him back to health. He's doing great now. Sadly,Tetsuo got sick and passed away last year.
Gorgo 4 years ago
oh i feel bad for you:(. but can you keep 3 male turtles together? Only they are baby turtles 1 year old and they live in water? Well if you want to know the kind they are i can tell you one is a snapping turtle, softshell turtle, and red ear slider.
TonyFirelli 4 years ago
I had a few box turtles myself... all of them died thout. How do you feed them.
I think box turtles are fucking ninjas dude. one min there and they are not its sweet but I it took me a week to find them. I had this one turtle name Corron she ran away. I miss her.
Turtlepimp8000 4 years ago
I suppose I've been lucky Woody has been with me for so long...(over 20 years)
I think the number 1 thing is you don't put them in a confined space like a tank...let them free rome...just make sure they don't get hurt. make their area is safe. Make sure they have plenty of water...and feed them regularly.

Oh,you bet !! Woody is doing much better !! He was having a rough time when I made this short !! Keep in mind... he is 34 years old ! they can live from 50 to 100 or more. No joke !! Male Eastern Box have Red eyes, Female of the breed have brown eyes. I'm so glad he's O.K. now !!
Gorgo 4 years ago
goood luk with him i bet he means alot to u
ellohenry 4 years ago
I'd be careful not to get them to hot...they might cook under to much heat. I don't know to much about that. Maybe find some pete-moss and put them in that with the light.... I think they are becoming extinct due to construction and humans driving them from their natural habitat. But maybe your right too. enviremental reason can be playing a role in making their eggs more fragile.
Good job !! Keep up the good work.

Gorgo 4 years ago
Hey and how often do you feed them, mine hasnt eaten in days
sarahagunther2007 4 years ago
A healthy one eats every day... If there is a problem...try getting some gel
vitamin A and carefully squirting some into his or her mouth... then put them into a tub of room temperture/luke warm water. Feed it some canned Tuna (in water not vegtable oil) They love it once they eat it once.
Gorgo 4 years ago
thank you
Gorgo 4 years ago
If not resolved in 10 days, or conditions are worsening, a visit to the vet is needed for a round of antibiotic injections.
justineml123 4 years ago
Hey, Thanks for the tip. He's doing alot better now. I was so worried I'd loose him. I have been busting vitamin A gels into his mouth hoping it will help him get better. It has. He's back to eating again...still have to hand feed...but that should be expected being that he lost most of his lower beak. I suppose in time it will grow back.
Gorgo 4 years ago
Increase heat to stimulate their natural immune system. If nasal discharge is clear in appearance, it could be a vitamin A deficiency.
justineml123 4 years ago
If your turtle is still alive you need to put a little peroxide in the break. Keep it clean. Feed him very soft food. Feed him wet cat or dog food...not chunks. Never mix males Box Turtles together. They are territorial and will seriously injure one another as you have discovered. Try not to move him around too much until he heals. Stress of any kind should be avoided now. Good luck!
doctorkazoo 4 years ago
I loved your video. One of the nicest ones I've seen here. I hope Woody stays well. I think mashing the food is a good idea and then wiping his beak off afterwards to keep it clean. Take care... :)
QZahmis 4 years ago
I've been giving him lots of water, offering him food...praying...let nature take it's coarse. He'll either pull through it...or not. I don't make enough money to take myself to a doctor let alone my dear turtle to the vet...this is partly why I filmed him. It's a tribute to Woody, Tetsuo,& Gamera... Trust me..I'm doing all I can to make him comfortable.
Gorgo 4 years ago
His diet consists of Nightcrawlers,Turkey breast, Strawberries,Chicken Noodle soup (soft carrots). He caused this problem with his beak. I did not know he hated the other turtle so much to where he'd bite and break his beak. He's been in bad shape ever since. I read the illness is an intestinal problem.
Gorgo 4 years ago
The broken beak is from him picking on another turtle. The other turtle went into his shell for protection...Woody bit and broke his beak off the others shell.
Box turtles life span= 50 in captivity 150 in wild "unless run over"
Gorgo 4 years ago
Sadly, Woody is very sick right now. As I stated I've had him Since I was 12...I'm 34 now...That's a long time to have a pet. Since he broke his beak ....his health is going way down hill. What were the symtoms of your dead turtle. Sneezing? bubblely mucas around mouth and nose? ? Just wondering....
Anyone reads this...have any ideas what this illness is and how to combat it?
