One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. It has that yearning for an age of lost contentment built into it and, as such, is timeless and universal.
I was, of course, writing about Grocer Jack. The song changed whilst I was writing. It is late and I should go to bed.

I can tell just by listening that's Nicky Simper of Deep Purple (Mark 1) on bass. He's using the same bass he used when he sessioned and recorded in The Flowerpot Men.
What a fantastic project Teenage Opera was, a lost gem that needs to be reborn and shown to the world.
I heard this wonderful song once in 1967. I remembered only the first line "Sam had a nice profession". I didn't know the name of the singer.
.A google search of this fragment of lyric took me to a website that gave the name Mark Wirtz.. I typed Mark Wirtz into You Tube and hey presto! Magic.
I have this song on a CD which came with an issue of Uncut magazine, The CD is entiled The Roots of Tommy. I find this tune to be wondrous and magical. I love it. Prior to buying the Uncut mag, I had never this song. Thanks Uncut. Nice post, 45rpmsingles!
Very Christmassy song. Takes me back to the winter of 1967, a very happy time. When the children sing "dear old Sam, etc" it brings me out in goosepimples every time.

This isn't bad, either.
