Abel Turner is a very tragic character. He was probably once a good man, but the burden of a rapidly changing world and the problems in his personal life proved to be too much for him. He didn't handle it the right way and therefore became what he is. His death at the end of the film was somewhat sad, but it was also a relief, he wouldn't cause any more trouble for anyone and he was finally at peace.
