It wasn't in fact two drunken fans that caused the rock to end up on the track. Two kids were rolling rocks down the embankment when one jumped over the fence at onto the racetrack! Go down to the Bathurst Pub and ask the owner about it, he might know a thing or to, being one of those kids!

Ford didn't poach Dick. And he wasn't driving "for" Holden.

Dick was a privater running a Torana and funding it quite tough going financially.

Then in '76 or maybe '77 he was offered a drive by Bryan Byrt Ford in their XB hardtop.

It was the right situation for Dick as he would be paid to drive and he wouldn't have to run the team from his own pocket.

Your comments the86er are spot on.Up till 1976 Dick was still driving an XU1 Torana when all the other top holden runners were in the L34.Joining Bryan Byrt's team gave Dick a chance to be in a competitive car that did not cost him anything would have been the best motivation to drive a Ford.I'm glad he did,I was a fan after the 1980 race,TRUBLU only got to lead for a short time but it was jet,if the rock incident never happened it would have won for sure.

It was unfortunate for Dick that tragically Bryan died of cancer in 1978 because by the end of the 1979 season,due to the guy running Bran Byrt Ford was did not see the value of motor racing,Dick became a privateer again. As this clip says the XD was an ex Highway Patrol car,built on a small budget,before he hit the rock Dick lapped Peter Brock and was flying,Moffats Ford lasted 3 laps.History shows DJ hit the rock and it was over.

Yep, you couldn't be more correct. However Dick said to win Bathurst that year wouldn't have given him as much exposure as what it did with the rock. So basicly if he had won Bathurst that year, he would have eventually ran out of money and been unable to continue. And we wouldn't have this fantastic team in the V8 supercars today. But yes he would have won it in 1980.

I agree 19escort73 the rock did get Dick huge exposure and the public donated something like $35,000,which Ford matched plus they also supplied a new body shell,I just think it's a shame he did not win it to prevent Peter Brock from winning again.DJR are still my favourite team although I think Davidson is the better driver,as for Steve he is nowhere near as good as his father was.
