@Erock503 Hey dude! Congratulations for the video! I love your sound and I envy you for having two of my favourite amps ever (the VH4 and the Herbert)!
Just one question, though: can I combine the Herbert with a regular 2x12 cab with an output of 120W without any problems whatsoever? If not, sticking to the 2x12 halfstack pattern, what speakers should I use to get a great sound out of it? Any response whould be welcome!
How does the VH4 compare to the CCV? Judging from the clips, they seem to have something similar, a modded tight marshall sound with quick attack and more punch.
your tone is godly... im KsE fan remember me... we were gonna do a swap, your traiditional mesa for my oversized one? I got a traditional finally... how much better does the mills sound?
Speaking of Boogie how do the Mills 412 and Boogie 412 compare? I have a boogie slant but am interested in the Mills. Is there THAT big of a difference?
@jimmyjames77 I like the Boogie cabs a lot. They are great sounding cabs IMO. However, I think the Mills are superior, just in my honest opinion. I don't get the same harshness I used to get with the V30 and certain amps, they sound good with everything I've put thru them. They are tighter, with the same huge resonance, and just project like crazy. The baffling system they use, along with the construction detail, make for an amazing cab IMO.
hey which diezel do you like better the vh4 or herbert? and whats the differences youve noticed? on their website they say the vh4 is tighter which i like really tight percussive amps
for the stuff I play, I eventually chose the Herbert, but I loved the VH4 too. The Herbert is a bit more modern sounding, not quite as compressed, a little more open sounding. I'm not sure what they mean by tighter though, the VH4 had this bit of a round quality to it for me, on ch3 anyway, which was my favorite. A boost took care of that, but I can dial in the Herbert without a boost.
hey man amp sounds great. right now i have a mesa boogie road king and im thinking about getting another amp. im looking at engls and diezel. what to u think i should get. i want an amp that has more gain then the mesa. for like heavy shit and extended range guitar. so what do u think?
The ENGL's are great for the 7 string and extended scale IMO. The Herbert and VH4 both work quite well too though, your ears will have to be the judge man. Sorry I can't be more help.
1st off this video was the inspiration that led me to buy a VH4 and a 2x12 Mills. However after just 2 weeks I blew off 2 fuses and I can't find a replacement anywhere, any suggestions? and which model of bb Xotic u use for channel 3?
sorry for the late reply, and thanks for kind words. Radio shack carries the fuses, I have gotten them for backup local. The BB is the standard one with the LED in the top center.
180 watts isnt a drastic amount louder than 100w. To get twice the volume, you'd need roughly 10 times the wattage. This isn't even taking into account the size of the power transformer. My 100 watt powerball isn't as loud as a 90 watt Mark V.
@Erock... that's a hell of an amp collection, man. Are those mills cabs worth the extra money over Orange, Mesa, etc.?
@GuardianOfFate12 Actually it is, and the fact that the Herbert requires an extra pair of power amp valves means that it is going to need much more volume before the power amp even begins to get pushed.
The Powerball may not be as loud as the Mark V but I know for a fact it is better quality and much more reliable. I continually hear horror stories with MESS-UP Boogies and seldom do I hear such things with ENGL's...I know what I want and ENGL suit me just fine.
That's not the point of the Herbert. The amount of power is merely for the increased headroom, which is highly desirable in an amp with this much preamp gain, and increased low end slam and controllability at high volumes. Honestly it is one of the better low volume amps I have ever played. Counterintuitive maybe, but it's nonetheless true.
@cmfrtblynumb88 Noise is not measured in watts it's measured in decibels!! Exactly for the ENGL's I have too, at lower volumes they still have tonal character which means I don't have to crank it like a Marshall.
@tony93666 You must've been born with 3 nuts then...LOL.
They do sound nice however, you should try an ENGL Savage, even the UK distributor of Diezel amps said the Savage sounded awesome...that says something when your competitor speaks that way about you.
the Mills are my favorite cabs by a mile for the stuff I play. Extremely tight, huge lowend with tons of resonance, and excellent overall projection. I have not used a better cab for my tastes in tone, and I've owned quite a few.
hey brother, what's up man. I didn't know you scored a VH4, congrats! It's pretty standard EQ, but I'm boosting ch3 with a BB preamp, so that's the secret to that tone IMO. I'll look them up and PM you.
Well, if you want this amp i wouldent say that the fact that James uses some of these live would be the pull factor, his tone is not unique at all. His tone is a mixup of alot of other amplifiers.. Not as a good example, but take Adam Jones for example, he also uses more than one amplifier - but the tones heard in alot of tool's songs are from this amp, a gibson silverburst and adam's special teqnique. The Vh4 is one awesome amp anyways, will be my next if i can get my hands on one.
What tubes do you have in this? I am surprised to hear you say that you think the Herbert is chimier; this tones in this video are more bell-like than any of the Herbert videos I have seen.
I have Sovtek 6550WE in the VH4, but I was just referring to the clean channel with that "chimey" comment. The Herbert has one of my favorite clean channels of any high gainer I've owned.
Personally, I think the VH4 is the ultimate rock amp, which can easily pull off more modern metal also. The SE to me is all aggression, it just pummels for the modern metal sound, tons of tight lowend too. Both are great solo amps, you can't go wrong there IMO.
Jesus, two diezels and an engl sitting around? What do you do for a living, turn air into platinum wrapped in gold and diamonds? :D Either way, I'm officially jealous.
I like it a lot depending on the amp. I think these cabs work great with all V30. The V30 really bring out the midrange snarl in some amps. If the amp is a little bright in the upper mids already, I prefer the K100 x V30. They have a very tight big bottom, very strong midrange, but not the upper mid spike of the V30, slightly less upper mid. The V30 work great with an amp that's already tight like the VH4 however. Both configs work great in these cabs IMO

I like it a lot depending on the amp. I think these cabs work great with all V30. The V30 really bring out the midrange snarl in some amps. They have a very tight big bottom, very strong midrange, but not the upper mid spike of the V30, slightly less upper mid. The V30 work great with an amp that's already tight like the VH4 however. Crunch, I'm liking the VH4 better, has a bit of vintage vibe to it. Ch2+ on the Herbert and ch3 of the VH4 compare very favorably for heavy stuff. I would say the Herbert sounds a bit more modern and saturated, the VH4 a bit more open stronger midrange. Both lead channels are fantastic, just enough compression and gain to make it seem easier to play.
