The Russians won this battle and the war because the Russian commanders sacrificed their soldiers at will. They did not care about the amount of casualties they took becasue they could afford to take large losses. A brutal tactic but one that obviously worked.

To the credit of some of the German generals, they tried to suppress these orders. They did not completely succeed. The role of the Germans who administered the conquered territories behind the lines is not mixed at all, but extremely brutal and murderous.

By the time the US got involved, the Soviets were already pushing the Germans back to their inevitable destruction. The US getting involved was more like the nail in the coffin than the turning point. The turning point in Europe was Stalingrad.
