  • in a busy IRC channel, your screen must look like a lake in the rain.

  • Damn, I'm just taking intro to *nix.

  • this isnt really a hack since its open source... but it is cool

  • er.. please learn the meaning of the word "hack" before posting comments like that.

a "hack" in this scenario of course means "smart solution"

  • nice!

  • can someone point me to a tutorial so I can try this on my machine please

  • Its on the right side by the description. Click "more".

  • Ok that was awesome

  • can you do that on Gnome ?

( I heard that DBUS is not working on GNOME )

  • What? Why not? DBUS works in GNOME... and also on every other desktop environment afaik.. it is desktop independant... I think you mean that KDE doesn't natively use DBUS for interprocess communication, they use DCOP, but you can also use DBUS there for other applications, and in KDE 4.x they will make use of DBUS instead of DCOP for all KDE programs too.

  • I just found out later about it ... it's just that my 855gm intel Graphic doesn't support the water ripple effect ( too low spec ) ... that's why it doesn't work

I'll try it next time with some good nVidia card.

    : )

    Thank you for the reply

  • Oh, yes, water effect needs fragment shaders in your video card... Don't feel bad, I also can't use it on my radeon 7500 32MB :)

  • Another reason why Linux is awesome and usable for the desktop.

  • RuddODragonFear: And xvidcap also works on Xgl etc. and is not so hard to set up and works well in most cases, but if your pc isn't fast enough, resolutions or captures > 800x600 are not smooth enough to capture... If you check my videos, I recorded in 640x480 and 800x600, which is smooth enough for me (pentium m 2ghz) -- I haven't tried beryl-vidcap + seom yet though, because it's not working well with Xgl+fglrx, but it's supposed to work good on Nvidia-tfp or Aiglx?

  • senfo: it's not even official and I doubt it ever will be official, you can set it up yourself if you want, but it isn't in by default, so don't complain ;)

orcahol, jesperht: WereHamster is developing an openGL capture program, similar to FRAPS on windows, and he's also developing a beryl plugin to capture videos using his library (beryl-vidcap using seom library) - it might be good

  • Oh, not complaining. I actually think the affect is quite cool, but I can just imagine trying to get some productive work done and being irritated because somebody in an IM won't shut the hell up!

  • This is almost as easy to do on Mac OS X as it is to do on Linux. I'll go hack up something with Adium in a little bit! :)

But yes, Beryl is pretty sweet.

  • Soon linux will bypass Mac's GUI goodness. I love it! Now all I need is linux to play all my games and windows will never touch any of my machines again.

  • they're done with handycams because the only app that can capture (and only on AIGLX) is xvidcap and, until now, it was difficult to set it up.

  • actually beryl-vidcap works great using nvidia without

    AIGLX or XGL

  • I hate beryl. I'll stick with compiz :)

  • why is it that all of these beryl videos are done with hand cams?

  • Because I could'nt get any of the screen recorder apps to play nice with beryl. Hopefully my future creations will at least feature the use of a tripod ;)

  • Nice... I really have got to get around to getting XGL

  • Chances are, as with all Beryl/XGL features, it will be toggleable and/or modifiable.

  • I imagine it would be quite annoying if I were in the middle of reading something else and the person kept sending me a message. For me, a blinking task on the taskbar will suffice.

  • good work.

  • hahahah

  • Wow, such hostility. I mean, a simple "then don't use it" would have sufficed, but simply pointing out an inherent flaw automatically makes me a "fucking cocksmoker". Yikes!

No great ideas come without some form of opposition. I think somebody needs to learn how to take criticism a little better.

  • That's one of the few Beryl/XGL effects that actually seems useful and non-intrusive. Very cool.

  • Very nice! Thanks for posting.
