Hey. Good job. You sounded good, even though the camera was not the best. I was wondering what schools you made it in with this kind of rep. Thanks and I hope you respond soon.
Hey. This sounds really good. I have those excerpts and snare piece down. I was wondering what schools you got into with that rep? Thanks. I hope you respond soon.
sooo, looking at below comments, it seems that you didn't get in, which is odd because your playing was pretty good. Either way, don't let it get you down. I'm sure you're in good hands.
Nice playing, I'm sure you got in. As a future reference though, you want to be as professional looking as possiblel, which means you should probably ave at least a button down shirt on with slacks. You want the same formality that you would bring to a live audition. Also, it looks more professional if you record in the same place.
But playing wise, you're right where you should be. Nice job.
haha funny that i came across this... i did march in the spring for a few audishes and i'm learning both the bach (4 mallet... and if only it were written in treble...) and the kabalevsky right now. really enjoyed the snare piece though!
Interesting take on the Bach. I'm playing the entire suite this spring for a recital. If you didn't know a 4 mallet grip for this audition, I'm sure you've no doubt realized at college how much easier this piece is with 4 mallets, =) Also, I'm sure you've probably already learned that you could cut your dynamic in half in the piano sections of the Délécluse just by moving closer to the rim.
The Kabalevsky is a blast. I got to play the xylophone part this fall with a community orchestra.
i have to do an audition like this for a school called douglas anderson soon and im not sure if i want to do timpani and marimba on top of my snare piece
It might be a good idea to do all three, because it shows schools that you are versatile in each area. Even if not required, it'd be good to work on each. Is it a rudimental snare or is it a musical snare piece?
Unfortunately, no, but I do know one of the people who did make it in and she's really cool. I'm in LA actually, at USC Thornton, and I really love it here. So things work out, one way or another!
HAHA! That's sooo cool! That's him. I sorta knew because he said he was the ONLY undergrad. We met at orientation and we've been good friends since. You should tell him you ran into me online, he'll probably flip a shit haha
I use porcelain mallets for xylo. Unfortunately, all I had access to was a keylon xylo, so basically it sounds like a toy, but I'd be using the same sticks if it were a rosewood.
Unless you mean the marimba mallets, which are NZ3Bs, which were reccomended to me by my private teacher, and I found them to be just the right mix of a round sound with less articulation, but just enough to sound full and rich for this piece, especially in the lower range.
I would also recommend putting "two mallets" as one of your search words. I've seen a lot of ppl wanting to see the Bach piece played with 2 instead of 4. Thanks for posting it!
Ironically, I'm a west-coaster and looking at the west coast. I'm sorta split between USC and San Francisco Conservatory. I got into Lawrence and wait-listed at Eastman, but I'm not as interested in Lawrence as Eastman. Although, the day I was auditioning at Eastman, Mr. Burritt got stuck in Chicago so I've only met with Mr. Beck.
So yeah if they come back with an offer i'm gonna have a REALLY tough decision!
Sounds good! Your vid's way better than mine tech wise lol. Did you use iMovie or iDVD to create this? (especially the transitions (titles) in between pieces)? Way cool. So, will you be auditioning live for Colburn now? Good luck!
Haha yeah i used both. i couldn't quite get it to do what I wanted... it's sorta lacking in the customization aspect.
I had a neat piece for the background of the menu too lol
Yeah, I got the audition. I'm working on the excerpts and things that I need in addition to these... and Keeping the March going-- I am going to state Solo/Ensemble with it!!! You a player?
Sounds good and your video is wayy better than mine, tech wise. Did you use iMovie or iDVD to make all the transitions.. (titles in between each piece?) And just curious, will you be auditioning live for them now? Good luck!
Hey! It's Bruce!!!! Ok...so I randomly type in Elliot Cater and cello looking for Elliot Carter's Cello Concert and I found this!
Very nice job on your audition stuff...I have some things to say about the Bach (like...the first few measures...I think you hit G# instead of F# which isn't that big of a deal b/c it was really nice overall). The excerpts and the Carter was delicious (I especially loved the part where you were just jammin along)! Let me know how it all turns out :)
Thanks, Bruce! Lovely to hear from you. Yeah I know about the wrong notes but its something to do with the fact I was being recorded. It's a lot better now, though, considering I've played it so many more times since then.
Hey, thanks for checking me out, and I'll be sure to post how I do later on. Take care!
Thought about it. I'm more of a 2 mallet player at this point. I've been working on a 4 mallet piece actually, Gitano by Alice Gomez. However for the Bach, i feel it's better with two mallets. It's not that difficult to use only two, and it also you can be much more musical in your phrasing with two.
well. thats wre the tastes of every one goes its different path(sorry for my strange english). but i fellt much more cofortable with for mallets, especially with the high intervall jumps. but sure if your more used to play with two mallets its understandable that you prefer like that. im just used to play most of the marimba pieces with 4 mallets

That's awesome! I have a good friend who is a freshman at USC. He plays trumpet.

You're kidding... he's like my best friend here, if it's the same guy, and I think he's the only undergrad trumpet so yeah. Dude! Thats crazy!
SolidMixer 3 years ago
Hmm, is his name Ehren? If so, thats awesome! What a coincidence. If not, you should meet him he is a cool guy ;)
