He accually was a real person. he was asain though. back in the 1400s or 1500s. he handed out presents to people to bring them joy. his name was Nicholas as people refer to him as Saint Nicholas for he had such a good heart. ^^

You have to use your thumb nails and a little bit of pressure, then it doesn't hurt!

you're not supposed to have long fingernails, but angle them so that the way you're finger is moving, the nail is on the bottom. It will begin to hurt less if you do that, and you'll even grow a tolerance to the pain, keep practicing, took me some time. Came naturally though, no need to sit at the piano doing glissando's lol.
