  • THE IMPORTANT QUESTION IS.. WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE DEPRESSED?

  • yikes! i just started taking an SSRI 4 days ago. no more! i had a feeling about this. i knew this. psychiatrist medication just is not natural.

  • stupid antidepressants. why were they made in the first place? they only make everything worse

  • They certainly had this effect on me. I started taking them in the 2nd half of my sophomore year at a n.e boarding school. Emotional numbing became noticeable in the 2nd year of use, comorbid with exacerbated anxiety. This was ironic, since Paxil was meant to treat my anxiety-generated depression. I had a second stint with medication, ending several years ago, and have found all to have long-term negative effects, little benefit. "Everyone's problem is different, as long as it's the same."

  • My doctor didn't inform me of many of the side effects of SSRI drugs before I was prescribed... it would have been good to know considering THE HELL it was trying to get off them. I'm not writing this to deter anyone from taking them. But there should be a thorough understanding of the effects of any drug before it's taken.

  • 'Informative video. However, she did not mention the fact that many people are complaining about PERMANENT SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION AFTER USING SSRIs YEARS AFTER DISCONTINUING THEM. There is a support group on Yahoo with over 2400 members dealing with this, many who wish they'd never taken antidepressants. There are some of us on that forum who have suffered this kind of loss from so-called "antipsychotics". I, for one, have been off neuroleptics over 26 yrs. and I'm still numb. (See my channel.)

  • @spershall Check out her background, she is the most referenced scholar in the world on the subject of love and relationships. You on the other hand are a long term user of a pshcotropic drug! I wonder who is more reliable. Check out Ann Tracy PHD to see what she has to say about it. The worrying thing is that this side effect this is a mere sidenote compared to the other major problems with ssri/snri drugs. Research a little.

  • then tryanother drug a natural one.heres one i try.love yourself love your imperfections your talents no matter how small.dont compare your self to others.

  • @ninjafretshadow Gosh. I'm sure people who suffer from depression never thot of that. What a revelation!

  • WTF? Kill the ability to fall and stay in love? That's utterly ridiculous. If you're clinically depressed, please don't let this keep you from taking the medication you need. I have taken SSRIs for 15 years and have never once, ever, fallen out of love because of them. "Brain systems" are not "killed" by SSRIs, which are not, incidentally, "serotonin boosting" drugs. They inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, allowing it to remain in the synapses longer, but they do NOT produce more of it.

  • Bit of depression is good for you... drugs are fine in moderation; it's the moderation which is hard to get right.

  • i think it was the pills???- solid excuse... very clinical. wonder if she could help me? i don't take anything and i have an extremely high sex drive but i never experience orgasms and i've been stuck in a love that i would pay to get over for six years... maybe the drugs would help me to counter these afflictions?

  • I found this video incredibly interesting. Its crazy to think that the antidepressants some people are taking could affect their love life so drastically. This lead me to go away and research chemical aspects of love and relationships. Have a look at Hot Bites tumblr account

  • in response to becauseitjustiss

MDMA we are finding out works primarily on oxytocin pathways. never has a study empirically proven mdma to be neurotoxic. mdma works nothing like a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, in fact its more similar to an MAOI. also, mdma does inhibit sexual preformance so in a physical sense it does inhibit sexual love in a functional perspective.

  • It bothers me that when you say you feel depressed..BOOM you get pills!

I think this is so wrong!

The doctor should try and find out first what is really making a patient depressed, a lot of times things can be cured if the patient just feels he is really being heard, sometimes just talking to a doctor about what bothers you gives an enormous relief... a kind and understanding word from a doctor goes a long way!

Docoters need to practise this a little bit more!!!

  • Also there has to be more to this because MDMA (ecstasy) increases serotonin to such a ridiculous amount that its neurotoxic. Yet, its called the love drug because it causes intense feelings of inter-connectedness, love, and infatuation. Its a serotonin agonist and acts as an ssri at the same time. Obviously dangerous yet it doesnt inhibit love.

  • Do you think Wellbutrin (bupropion) inhibits feelings of love/infautation? It acts as a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, increasing the levels of both chemicals. It indirectly increases serotonin firing. However it does not increase serotonin. Please reply. BTW, its more of a stimulant type drug than antidepressant i hear

  • Considering how the world is overflowing with people and has serious problems up the wazoo as a result, does any sane person feel all that bad if the sex drive in our species withers and dies? I know I don't.

  • have to wonder if she's ever been in love and/or is in a relationship... anyone know?

  • Obviously marijuana is the answer then ^^

  • no, it isn't. more studies need to be conducted on cannabis use and long term effects, but some studies already point to neurological damage caused by prolonged regular use and/or abuse of mj.

  • She is not saying that antidepresants (in this case SSRIs) are not necessary. She's just saying that they are dangerous and should be taken only by necessity. If you read her MIT study, you'll notice how serious and professional she is. She even states that SSRIs are necessary in specific cases of clinical depressions.

  • I love Helen Fisher . . . but as mentioned in previous comments, they are merely studies. . . not first hand experience with pains and joys of love with depression and drug treatment . . . there is a lot more here than what a mere 4 min video on youtube can show, but it's a good start! 5 stars

  • I would have believed it awhile ago, but now I find that love is what you make it.

  • Yeah I think she oversimplifies things a bit. I've done research and found that it's more complicated than that.

  • Both

  • Well they tend to make people tired.Love and sex have more to do with something beyond a

    brain,but I don't think she'd agree.People

are also individuals,a concept she's not at all in touch with.Love goes beyond biology.

  • She's a controll freak and filling people's

minds with limiting ideas of who they are,or what she wants them to be.

  • hypocrite

  • so shes saying its possible to destroy romantic love.

  • She's probably quite correct about everything she says in this video. However, it's rather easy to tell that she's never had clinical depression. If I had to choose between life with both love and deression, or a life where I DIDN'T want to kill myself every day, I'd be a fool to pick the first. Furthermore, I'd be a dead fool.

  • @dirkson It doesn't have to be an either or situation.

  • @dirkson those drugs probably caused your depression in the 1st place.. take the highs n lows... Just SAY NO to prescription drugs !!

  • @younwhosarmy

    You're a moron.

  • 5 stars and added to favorites. Helen fisher nails it as usually.

  • I LOVE DR. HELEN FISHER!!!! She rules. Nails it most of the time!!! If one doesn't realize how chemically related emotions are, there is much to learn.

  • I agree. Very true.

  • This answer is too simple. It's way more complicated than that.

  • i totally agree

but i think there are bigger issues between ..sex,porn, and hedonism... and ...Love, Marriage, and Parenting....
