  • Can you transfer video from the camera to the computer using a usb instead of firewire?

  • @jkman10 Yes, after the video is recorded, you can transfer to computer and edit in Sony Movie Studio

  • How do you switch from camera to camera while recording? Do you have a mixer or a camera switcher?

  • @joeman123456789duhhh If you need to record multiple cameras in a live production while switching, don't use Sony Movie Studio. It is a video editing program, not really designed for live video capture. For live video switching, consider a NewTek Tricaster.

  • Hi Bill, My Panasonic HDC-HS700 has a HDMI connection. How or can I use this connection for U-Streaming.

  • ok, another question...what if I install a "FireWire ExpressCard" Adapter to my laptop, will that now be able to let met/support live video feed over the internet from my laptop from my mini-dv camcorder? I will be filming a 3-4hr. football game/sporting event

  • @version2media I would never recommend trying to do a live video capture of a 3-4 hr event via firewire to a laptop from a mini-dv camera.

  • @guerillabill so what would you recommend? :\ Im getting hired to film a football game this weekend, games are usually 3hrs, we got several other self owned sport media groups who film 3hr games 2 or 3 times a week? dont know the exact equipment they are using, saw once they just had a camcorder on tripod wired to laptop with a microphone and that was it? I'm trying to do the same basically? would it help if I sent you their website link/ustream channel? to see what I'd be doing

  • @version2media If you want to video a live football game, record it within the camera onto tape. Don't try to save live video to a laptop. Use a tripod, have plenty of batteries, use a zoom microphone, have extra tapes. Do a test run before you do it for money.

  • @guerillabill yes this game will be a test run, Yes, I will be recording onto tape, I'm not saving it to my laptop, I'm just saving it online to ustream since it lets you host it/save it on there, I wont save anything footage at all on my laptops memory. I have 2 backup batteries, tripod, and all the needed accessories...so just to ensure from my original question...by me installing that firewire expresscard to my laptop, I can use that to hook up firewire cable to do live streaming correct?

  • @version2media Live streaming to ustream requires a fast internet connection. Even with a very fast connection, the streamed video will be low resolution, with low frame rate. To get better video at ustream, you have to pay for a premium plan, have a extremely fast connection, and HD video source. And unless the internet connection is rock solid, expect the stream to drop several times during a 3 hour production. And no, a firewire express card on your laptop generally won't work well.

  • Thank you so much, greatly appreciate it :)

  • Oh, no, I'm not trying to use sony movie studio for anything at all, just trying to see if usb 2.0 firewire works to do live feed, connected to comp and using u stream

  • @version2media You can do live feed to ustream and other sites via USB if your camera has USB and your computer has USB. Firewire to USB usually doesn't work.

  • Though you don't recommend using that usb firewire,.would it work though? I would like to use that method this time then add an actual firewire port, I will also be using u stream for love feed

  • @version2media No, you can not capture live video via USB using Sony Movie Studio - even if the USB is a firewire converter.

  • what firewire do you have connected during this video? do you have a firewire port?

im looking to do live broadcasting and wanted to know if i bought a usb 2.0 to IEEE 1394, if that'll work? i will be using a laptop with wireless internet to film a sports game live, will it let me connect the camcorder to laptop using that usb 2.0 firewire? or will i need some other form of port?

any feed back greatly appreciated, i have a week to figure this out before the game

  • @version2media I would not recommend trying to do a live broadcast using a laptop and USB. And no, a USB 2.0 to firewire converter won't bring video from a USB video camera into Sony Vegas. You might want to check out vidblaster software.

  • how do i keep my camera from going on standby?

  • @randamus08 If the video camera has a tape drive, open the tape door and it won't go into standby mode.

  • hi i have a sony dcr 150e will it work with a firewire cable

  • @mosse232 According to the Sony web site, the DCR 150E camera does not have a firewire cable - so you would not be able to use it to capture video direct to computer. On that camera, it records compressed video to DVD disks. You can then capture the video from the DVD into your computer - assuming your computer has a DVD drive.

  • I'm looking to buy a camcorder, but I can't tell if the outlet for a firewire cable is there. What is it called?

  • @TheTommyology Unless the camcorder records to miniDV tape, it will not have a firewire port. That means you can't record live to the computer, but you can still move the video from the camera using the SD card in the camera.

  • I love your video!!! Is it recorded in 1080i? Some of my friends recommended Game Capture HD for its high capturing quality. Have you heard it? Would like to know your opinions.

  • @abcwang1990 I record most of my YouTube videos at 720-30P. For screencapture I use Camtasia Studio.

  • DOES IT WORK WITH ANY VIDEO CAMERAA??

  • @Dovis05 No, this only works with camcorders that have a firewire out port. This usually means just camcorders that record to miniDV tape.

  • Could you add a special effect so it gives you a live preview with you and the special effect

  • @TheDaniel500 No, you can't add special effects while capturing live video in Sony Movie Studio. If you want to do that, either use a web cam program that has special effects like vidblaster, or use a digital video mixer like NewTek Tricaster

  • I guess you would need USB 2.0 to go through usb

  • @TheDaniel500 Sony Vegas Movie Studio isn't able to capture live video through USB.

  • @guerillabill yes it can. i tried it with my new camera with the sony video capture (there is a little camera icon next to the import media icon) software that came with it and it worked

  • Nice video... quick and straight to the point. Nice work!

  • i have JCV GR-d72U Camcorder, and i wanna connect it to my pc, but i do not have the fire wire port in my pc

    what should i do ?

    thanks

  • @moroccansincaliforni According to the JVC manual, the JCV GR-d72U has a firewire port. If it does, use that to connect to your computer.

  • Thank you for your tutorial. I use a Canon XH-A1 as a webcam to broadcast live content. I also record directly to a one hour tape at times. There are many times that it would be beneficial to be able to record directly to PC. Could you recommend a setup which would enable live webcam broadcast while recording directly to the PC? I currently use Sony Vegas Pro for editing and, when broadcasting, I use ManyCam. Thanks again!

  • @cookingwithanarchy You can connect to your computer via the firewire port on the camera, and record directly into Sony Vegas. If you plan to do a live webcam broadcast, use webcam software that can record your webcam while it streams to the web. I wouldn't try recording to Vegas while also using web cam software - your computer may not be able to handle the amount of live data transfer required for that.

  • A video inside of a video, inception

  • Bill, first Id like to thank you for your vids. Theyre very helpful. Im a novice and want to start recording my church sevices so that I can burn a dvd of them for folks as well as post them to a YouTube channel. We have a Peavey sound/ mixing board for source. What camera features and software would you recommend for this task. Id especially like a camcorder that has a remote so that I can zoom in and out without having to stand up. We will also purchase a motorized pan and tilt unit. Thanks!

  • @bigapple2625 I would recommend using two cameras - one with a wide shot, and one with a close up. Then switch between cameras to create interest. Do not use ZOOM - unless you want to make people seasick during the production.

Use a video switcher to switch between the cameras, and send the output to a DVD recorder.

  • to record live video

  • @videowmaker67 The camera you use has everything to do with whether you can connect it to your computer to record live video direct to the computer. With cameras that record to SDHC card, there is no video stream coming out of the camera that can be recorded. With cameras that record to tape and have firewire, there is usually a video stream that can be recorded. Webcams that connect via USB can be recorded using web cam or videoblog software.

  • how to reord while the camerecorder connected to pc

  • @videowmaker67 If your camcorder has a firewire port, you can connect it to the firewire port on your computer, and record the video direct to the pc as well as to the tape in the camcorder. If your camcorder does not have a firewire port, it can't be recorded live to pc.

  • could you it as a webcam too ?

    Pls answer ;)

    Rlly like to know

  • @DutchLoLVideos If the web cam software support firewire input, you can use a firewire equipped web cam with webcam software. Webcams such as the Microsoft LifeChat Studio HD can be used to record live video direct to the computer, using either the software Microsoft includes, or most web cam software.

  • Hey sir how are you? I appreciate the insight.

Can you tell me why You use Vegas and not Final Cut? We are beginning to broadcast locally and are making a decision on which program to Rec live to and edit.

Thank you for any and every insight or opinion you have to offer.

  • @christlovemins I use Sony Vegas instead of Final Cut Pro because I edit on Windows and Vegas runs on Windows, Final Cut Pro runs on Macs. If I had a Mac, I'd probably use Final Cut Pro.

  • So how do you record vid games from your webcam?

  • How much is sony vegas???

  • @codaddict25 Currently, Sony Vegas Movie Studio 10, is under $50 at Amazon.

  • You are awesome! Thank you so much!=)

  • You are awesome! Thank you so much!

  • YOU ARE AWESOME!! Thank you so much!=)

  • Can you capture a video but on the mini sd card? because i dont have the wire or anything and i want to upload a video.

  • @TheMostdope17 The ONLY way to capture Live video with Sony Vegas is via a firewire connection. And in no instance can live video be captured from a camera that records to SD card.

  • @tytyrg7878 Sorry, I don't use Windows Movie Maker, so don't know if it can do a live capture.

  • Hello Sir. I'm planning to do live streaming of my church service can you advise me on how must i go about getting started and what do i really need to do to get this done. i have a mac and i was planning to use it as the main computer! but i'm lost where getting the right stuff so pleas if you can advise me . God bless !

  • @vibestouch1 The easiest way to stream video is to visit ustream tv and use the free ustream producer

  • can this send a video on youtube.com

  • @SuperSlick305 You can upload videos from Sony Movie Studio to YouTube, but you can't capture them live while playing on YouTube using a firewire or other cable.

You can download a video from YouTube and import into Sony Movie Sony if you download the video as avi, wmv, mp4.

  • @guerillabill kk thanks

  • Can we record more than 1 camcorders at the same time...?

  • @inixtv You can't capture two live video streams at once. But you can edit multiple video tracks (up to ten) once the video has been captured and stored on your computer.

  • hey bill i have an hv30 and i wanted to take the accessory shoe mount cover off, how did you do it on your hv20?

  • @ZahidSkateboards On my HV20, it slid off.

  • can you do this with a camcorder that saves to SD

  • @ZahidSkateboards No. Camcorders that record to SD do not send a live video stream out. The video is recorded to the memory card. After it is recorded, you can upload the video file from the memory card to the computer.

  • merci moncieur pour les informations

  • Thanks for the tutorial Bill.

  • et le programme que tu as utilisé dans ce video

  • @MrYousse Sony Movie Studio Platinum

  • hello you have driver of canon hv 20

  • @MrYousse In Windows XP and Windows Vista, no special drivers are needed to capture video from the Canon HV20. Just connect a firewire cable between the camera and computer, and it will be ready to capture.

  • can we use it as a webcam ?

  • @abhishek6561397 You can't really use Sony Vegas Movie Studio as a web cam.

  • thanks this helped :D

  • @UberHackerJK It works with firewire. Not sure if it works any other way.

  • My Canon HV40 isn't reconised by Vegas MS 10. Tried the legacy driver fix, no dice. Any suggestions?

  • @gsogoz Connect the HV40 to your computer via the firewire cable. Not the USB cable. Turn the camera on, and if Windows recognizes the camera, Vegas will also see it. I've got a HV40 and it works well with MS10

  • @guerillabill I did connect via firewire. Windows recognizes it but Vegas doesn't.

  • @gsogoz To get Sony Movie Studio to recognize your HV40, do this:

From the Sony Movie Studio toolbar, choose 'options', 'preferences', 'video', and uncheck 'use external video capture application'.

  • @guerillabill Thanks Bill. I also discovered the little camcorder icon which needs to be clicked for capturing.

  • I'm known here as MetallicBill, Hi ya! haha

I'd add that the Digital8 Sony Handycam I bought also has streaming USB feature, to be used in a webcam type function or if you're short on FW, you can use the USB to get the tape content it shoots digitally

  • ZOMG!!! I GOT THE SAME SPEAKERS AS UU!!! SERIOUS!!!.. mine are really old

  • Bill, I just downloaded a trial of Sony Vegas and I was wondering why it says this when I try to use my camera "Please make sure your camera is turned on and not being used by another application." When it is turned on and not being used by another application. I tried to use it in Windows Movie Maker and I get a very similar message.

Do you know what is wrong?

Also, are there any other programs that can record live feed from a camera into my computer?

    Thanks

  • @LukeExtraordinaire If you want to record live video to Sony Movie Studio or Windows Movie Maker, the camera must be connected via firewire. It will not work if you connect via USB.

  • you are mine and my teachers hero

  • Thanks for this! I will give it a go today.

  • How is it nowadays, could I just get a "cheap" older 720p camcorder (since budget is REALLY small and 720p is enough in my opinion) and connect that via USB (since Version changed and the new Version 10 of Sony Vegas is available) to my computer and record it for Youtube? Even though there are pretty handy pocket-camcorders, either their capturing quality is really bad and grainy, or they are way to expensive. So I thought this might be an option. What do you think, do you have any suggestion?

  • @dummerbube Cameras that connect via USB, usually connect as an external storage device and not a live feed device. So you can't capture direct to computer or Movie Studio. But you can still get excellent quality using a Kodak Zi8 camera (under $90 at Amazon), set in 720P mode. Shoot the video, then download to your computer via USB. Then import and edit in Movie Studio, then upload to YouTube. I use a Kodak Zi8 for many of the videos I've posted on YouTube.

  • @guerillabill Thanks a lot for the helpful information! Actually the Zi8 would be my choise (since it has nice hardware features like a mic in, remote controllable,...), but I hoped that I could find an old Camcorder for like 50$. Nevertheless, thanks again - and if you feel like it, I would be very pleased to get your opinion on the animations I created with vegas, since Vegas is not typically for animations but I still was able to do some stuff with it. If not, thanks a lot anyway.

  • can you just do this with usb? i only have a digital camera and it doenst have firewire out

  • @ImAChristian666 You can't record direct into Sony Movie Studio with USB. But you can copy the video from the USB and import into Movie Studio after it has been recorded.

  • Hello Mr. Myers, I could use your assistance. I want to run live camera footage into a interactive media and message software so I can configure the display that would run out of the computer via VGA and into a projector. The camera is a fairly old Sony handycam vision DCR-TRV900. It looks like both the camera and laptop have fire wire ports. would this setup you showed work for what I need, I don't have a fire wire cable yet to test for myself.

  • @Descydia The method of capturing live video through Vegas would not be suitable for what you propose.

You need either a digital video mixer (ie search ebay for 'panasonic digital video mixer'), and overlay the computer graphics on top of the video via the mixer. Or you need a genlock for your computer.

  • Hi Mr Guerillabill,

Im leon here. I would like to check with you, are the any ways for me to achieve following live filming using a camcorder.

What i need was, i have a camaraman performing live video shooting, at a same time without any cable (as there is a distance between 2 locations)at the other side in a room, my VIP is able to watch LIVE from what the cameraman is filming.

    Thanks for reading.

  • @leong8301 You can use a wireless video transmitter and receiver. Connect the transmitter to the video out on the camera, and connect the receiver to the video in on any TV monitor. This will transmit the video and audio from the camera to the monitor.

Find these wireless transmitters/receiver packages for around $50. Search google for 'wireless video transmitter x10'

  • with the firewire cable one side is fire wire and what is the other side?usb? or can it be anything?i dont have a lot of knowledge about technology

  • @TheTGOTT To record live video in Sony Vegas, the cable must be firewire from the camera to firewire on the computer. In most cases, you don't want to record live video. Just record in the video camera and then upload to computer for editing.

  • hey Bill great stuff there!!i just wanna ask which kind of camcorder is best for recording live instruments, with micinput so i can use pro mics for better sound, and with fire wire so i can record and upload it on youtube easily and yet has to have good quality and yet not too expensive(im still young to buy expensive stuff)

  • @TheTGOTT I use a Canon HF S200 to record many of my videos. Has external microphone port and records to SDHC card. For camera that records to tape and has firewire, I use canon HV40.

  • You're the best Bill...

Thinking about buying a 50D CAnon, do you have tips on this?

  • @freejumptraining I personally prefer the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS. Much smaller package, shoots great photos, and 720p avi video. For 1/10 the price of the Canon 50D.

  • hay if a make a video can u c it & help me out with this

  • lol, fire-wire, that hasn't been used in a while.

  • @shadow15555555555 All camcorders sold in the past 10 years that record to tape have firewire. Still available on some of the top rated camcorders on the market. Camcorders that record to SD card don't have firewire.

  • Can I use a usb cable instead of firewire cable ?

  • @TheTransPark No. Sony Movie Studio can only capture live video via a firewire cable.

  • Hi there i have a question, can i combine this to my presentation manager? It is a software for church use. :D

  • @gablaw888 You probably can't capture live video in your presentation manager. But you probably can import video clips captured or edited in other applications.

  • Can you recommend a good camcorder with firewire that's less than $400? I need this camera to be able to do two things. 1) be able to go live into a computer like a webcam for video conferencing and webinars 2) for recording short videos to be uploaded to the web such as a walk-through of a home or neighborhood.

  • @bconradsmith Search the internet. there are thousands

  • Great vid.

I've hunted high and low and there are no new camcorders with firewire in/out! I would like to 'capture live' but the new breed of camcorders can't do it...

    any advice? :)

  • @pixonu Most new camcorders capture to a SD card. This makes capturing direct to computer impossible. But after recording to the SD card, you can quickly move the file to the computer. Takes just a few seconds to move even very large files.

  • @guerillabill Can you usually connect the computer to the camcorder whilst filming? (and transfer whilst filming) - I ideally need to review the footage on the computer to make sure the shot is perfect and don't want to waste time taking SD cards in and out

Many thanks for your help :)

  • @pixonu You can only record direct to computer with cameras that have a firewire out connection. Most people who don't have a firewire out, use a preview monitor attached to the camera to get the shot and lighting right, before they shoot, and then they watch the preview monitor during the shot to keep it right.

  • I have a vivitar camera that will record video but not sound. Can I somehow take sound from a CD and add that to the video so I have a video with sound on YouTube? It's a song that I wrote. Thanks for your help.

  • @1coryrsleepy In Sony Movie Studio, you can add sound to video, by just dragging the audio clip onto an audio track below the video track. That audio can be music, narration, sound effects, etc.

  • well dont realy need fraps or anything xD you can also just do like he said and then aim the camera on ure screen might get bad footage but hey atleast u got it recorded xD [it's adviced to that in a dark room so it wont get over exposuerd to the light so u just recorded for nothing] darker room makes everything more balanced when recording somthing from a screen ;P

  • will this help on video games i really wanna record a montage clip

  • @rokey12 No, this only works when recording from a camcorder with firewire. To record video games, use Fraps

  • @guerillabill

mind being a lil smplier wat are fraps dont know much all i know is to get a controller in my hand can win lol ty for the help

  • @rokey12 Fraps is software used to record computer game videos. Search google for 'Fraps' and you'll find it.

  • @guerillabill I have problems with connecting my camcorder, atm im connecting by using usb, but i also have a DV stick. Should i buy a DV kabel, do you think it will help?

It seems as i have installed drivers correct. Im trying to connect by Windows movie makers and so far, my computer can't find the camera. Even though it is installed under my hardware devices.

    Is it a software problem?

  • @realmuddiboy With a camcorder that records to tape, you need a firewire connection to record live video direct to computer. If the camera records to SD card, you won't be able to record live video to the computer, as the video is stored as a file, and not streamed to the USB cable.

  • Hi There. I'm working with a Canon Vixia. I connect the cabel from the camera to my USB but I cannot for the life of me get it to capture the way you're showing. I've tried both Windows Movie Maker and my actual software (Magix Edit Pro 15) and neither pick it up. Any ideas on why? Yous is the only video that even comes CLOSE to getting me on the right track.

  • @TravisTricky To record live video to your computer, you must use the firewire port on the camera, not the USB port.

  • What resolution does the Vegas capture the video file at

  • @aloykatos Full uncompressed avi

  • Thanks for the info. I'll pursue it.

  • Hi guerillabill...Can I use my Flip camera to show things live in my home ec lab on TV or via laptop & projector?

  • @kntrounds No, you can only connect live to Vegas with firewire equipped cameras.

But you could use your flip with web cam software to show live video.

  • @knightdrummer94 You need a 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable for your laptop. Find them on eBay for $3.00

  • @guerillabill Dude, you're awesome. Thank you so much!

  • Is it also possible for HDD camcorders?

  • @JulianProductionz This is only possible with camcorders that have firewire out port.

  • @guerillabill Damn, thanks for the comment anyway!

  • @guerillabill :( thanks for the fast response anyway!

  • What kind of firewire cable do I need to connect my Sony Handycam to my Laptop pc that only has a 1394 port and not an actual fire wire port???

  • @xocaitlin88ox You're in luck. A 1394 port is the same as a firewire port. You probably need a 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable

  • what settings did you use to export this?

  • @NickandCharlieShorts The camera needs to have a firewire connection to the computer, and needs to be in record mode. No other settings necessary.

  • thank you!!!

  • if you use a viseo camera in live does the computer mistakes it with a webcam?

i also connect the camera using the tv tunner, it has an AV input.

  • @Echofromsomewere1 Sony Movie Studio can only capture live video via firewire, not TV tuner, not AV input.

  • Does it have to be a Firewire? or can i use the USB feature of my video cam? thanks.. i have a JVC Everio... thanks !

  • @karlajihil To record live video to sony vegas movie studio, you have to use a firewire connection

  • @guerillabill aw! that sucks! ill just buy a pc camera instead. great video! hepls alot man!

  • Do you know how to convert video digital 8 tape to a PC or CD? My old Sony digital High 8 uses tape and I would like to convert it so I can save it to my PC and later put it on a CD!! The tape has great video I took of my dog who died in 2005!! Thanks.

  • @majorghn If the camcorder has a firewire port, you can use that to capture to your computer. If it doesn't have a firewire port, you'll need to connect the video/audio from the camcorder to another camcorder that does have a firewire port, and do pass through recording to your computer. Or just take the tape to Walgreens and have them put on DVD for you.

  • @ThePoshPetz This only works if both your camcorder and computer have firewire ports. If they do, connect the 4 pin end of the firewire cable to your camcorder, and the 6 pin end to your computer.

  • same camera!!

  • ok, thanks Bill

  • whats dubbing?

  • @CubeLuda Your camcorder is a 'low definition' camcorder. It can shoot in 'HQ' mode which is really only moderate quality SD video. The SP mode is lower quality SD video, which is achieved by reducing the bit rate. LQ mode is lowest quality video.

    OK for home movies.

  • can u tell me how to record live to the internet via my web cam?

  • @danny11712 Yes - use ustream . tv

  • THANKS SO MUCH!

  • do i need firewire or can this be done with a usb also?

  • With Sony Vegas and Movie Studio, this can only be done using firewire. It won't work using USB connection

  • @guerillabill

    Hi friend,

I have a question regarding FireWire. Would this work on any camcorder that has firewire? I have a Sony MiniDVD Handycam, which holds 1.4GB DVD discs. The question is, will it work with this camera? Or would it need to be the latest and greatest? I bought this back in 2004/5.

I also have another question if you don't mind... What is the rough ammount of HDD space this will use while recording? for eg: How much recording can I fit on a 500GB HDD?

    Regards.

  • @CubeLuda This will work with most camcorders that have firewire.

You can expect captured video to take about 30 Gig of space per hour of captured video.

  • @guerillabill

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! :D

That is insanely... Is there anyway to sort off... "compress" the file as it records or a way to do it after its done?

  • 30 Gig an hour is not bad. Wait until you capture and render HD video - then you can get up to 100 gig per hour of video.

Disk space is cheap though - so don't compress until final render.

  • @guerillabill

Well, I don't have a HD camcorder. It's a miniDVD one, it can hold 60 minutes on a 1.4GB disc.

Thats why I was so amazed...

I also wanted to use it as a CCTV. But I can't seen as 30GB's an hour... I may be gone for days. :(

  • Your DVD camcorder compresses the video to mpeg2 while recording. The compression removes about 70% of the video quality.

OK for home movies, not OK for videos you plan to sell

  • isnt thier a way soo i can record what im doing on my laptop without putting the camera in a position to record

    ?

  • If you want to record computer screen activity, you'll get better results using a computer screen recording program. I use Camtasia for that.
