  • This is kinda Creepy...If i was in a dark ,old house and this was playing...I would shit myself

  • When her voice cracks at the end... just, god dammit.

  • @kazuoxXxtakada That's not a voice crack, take it as something like... I dunno, a robot losing it's power or something like that, you gotta remember that she's a robot and robots sometimes have these things in their voices.

  • This reminds me the Companion Cube lament.../watch?v=xK6xKB65ZQA

  • Best soundtrack ever. Its sad and awesome

  • personaly i dont really care about what is being said. Its the emotion of the words that matter. and right now what im hearing is a sad potatoe left in the dark to be pecked at by birds.

  • Does anyone else hear a slight resemblance to 'Cara Mia Addio' at 0:30? Or is it just me?

  • @ipodluigi505 seems like in any track from portal 2 somebody hears "Cara Mia Addio"... "Cara Mia Addio" sounds only in "Hard Sunshine", "Love As A Construct", "Space Phase"... and "Cara Mia Addio"

  • 2 people were deleted by GLaDOS and then killed by Wheatley

  • Whoa there! This stuff's really calming. *dances swiftly along with the music*

  • This song symbolizes GLaDOS realizing what it means to be taken out of her power. She had all the strength in the world, but now she's reduced to a simple potato battery. For the first time in her life, she knows what it's like to have to sit and await her fate. For the first time, she is truly sad.

  • If this song was a potato... it would be a good po- Oh wait. Nevermind.

  • Every time I hear this song I think of her deep down in the depths of the old Apeture science. The chances of someone finding her absolute zero. Everything taken away from her instantly, so all she can do is sit at the bottom of the pit that a soul hasn't touched in decades and sing.... This song is very moving considering the circumstances she has found herself in. This is one of the most moving songs in the series if you ask me.

  • @MrTomLegit *Aperture

  • I can here some Cara Mia in this but i'm not sure

  • I get chills everytime I hear it.

    Just fantastic.

  • Am i the only one who thinks it sounds like something from doctor who?

  • @GreenThunderLuigi Thank you so much, seriously. Not knowing any part these lyrics has been driving me nuts.

  • WOW this sounds like an OLDOLDOLD song...They did their homework, that they did.

  • I didn't take the time to actually listen to this song, but it sent real chills up my spine whenever I was at the menu. Actually it was kind of creepy and I had to load the game fast and get through chapter seven as quickly as possible. And now that I am actually listening... WTF, I'm crying over a sad potato with a computer in it. Music brings out way too much emotion in me.

  • I was reading through the lab rat comic on steam while this was playing on the main menu. It went along with it eerily well.

  • In space, noone can hear you sing about sad potatoes.

  • When is this is the game? I didn't hear it. Though it does sound like Cara Mia...

  • @columbus8myhw It's one of the main menu musics.

  • @columbus8myhw At the end of Wheatleys betrayal, if you go back to the menu, you hear it.

  • Haunting.

  • THE HAS TO BE A PORTAL 3!!!

  • I didn't realise this was a voice, I thought it was just background noise...

  • Am I the only one that hears Cara Mia very faintly?

  • @princesszwinky If you're talkming about the end I'm pretty sure she's saying "goodbye."

  • Proof that Mrs. McClain can even sound beautiful when singing garbled-robot Latin.

  • The only thing that would make this extremely scary is if Chell saw "G-Man" in the distance, standing and staring.....

  • @rockclaw200 Rise and shine, Miss Chell. Rise and ... shine. The wrong woman in the right place can make all the difference, in the world. So wake up, Miss Chell. Wake up and... Smell the ashes!

  • Interestingly, although this song seems to be from the perspective of GLaDOS, it's the turrets that sing it, as with the ending opera. They seem to be part of GLaDOS's mind somehow, even if they show some individuality occasionally.

  • @PedanticPig they are. the turrets are all miniature personality cores

  • seems wheatley and the space core hit dislike......hmmmm

  • This genuinly captures the feeling of being at Aperture, Your trapped, alone, probably scared to see whats in the next room. Its a truely beutiful piece of music :)

  • GlaDOS was punished by the Wheatley for giving the gift of science to mankind. She was cast into the bowels of Old Aperture and pecked by birds.

  • Being alone is why I listen to this song.

  • we need subs.

  • I think the person in the background is supposed to be Rattman.

  • Does anyone know the time signature this song is in?~

When I think of lament i think of 3/4 but it's kinda...off. Which might be on purpose? But i don't know. I'm trying to write out this music. ^.^

  • GlaDos isn't giant, that person is actually in the background and GlaDos is looking at YOU, you heard that: YOU!

  • @marclarell Um, I hope you're being facetious, because if not then you have no sense of perspective.

(Of course that doesn't change the fact that you're essentially right — GLaDOS isn't REALLY that big in canon.)

  • @marclarell

But why is that person stood in an orange shaft of light that's coming from GLaDOS' eye?

  • Comment removed

  • So, am I going nuts or is there no audible singing?

  • @GraceTheUnstoppable You might have a hearing problem with certain frequencies. My grandma is going deaf and can't perceive it as a human voice either.

  • @VannahWilson

Indeed I do, I'm partially deaf. It must be the frequencies.

  • @GraceTheUnstoppable Yeah, the voice is so heavily processed that to human ears the frequency is teetering right on the edge between "human voice" and "synthesizer".

  • @VannahWilson

The odd thing is, I can hear it when there's no music.

  • This is so sad and beautiful.....

  • Rough Translation:

    Potato Lacrimosa (Weeping Potato)

Potato Po Uota (Power Potato Vows)

Diva Me A Atra Anima Evicta (My soul won over by the black goddess)

Diu E Me A Atra A Mei A Adiu (Me from my long blackout, from any aid)

Tristi Anima Evicta (Sadness won over my soul)

Tristi Demu Notu (Sadness at last known)

Do Mo Nata Anima Evicta (I give only the soul born the right to win)

Dega Mi Atra Ala Te Teme Cha (You yourself live because of the black wing of my charity)

    Hope this helps =)

  • @GreenThunderLuigi That's *beautiful*! If that's what she's really saying, then she is an amazing poet!

  • @GreenThunderLuigi thanks it really is the lyrics.

  • @GreenThunderLuigi Along with a faint "goodbye" at the end.

  • @GreenThunderLuigi seems VERY legit.

no sarcasm. thats very much like what i am hearing.

  • @iamnotamouseok Lol, the gag is that GLaDOS' voice actor, forget the name, actually wrote the Latin wording (which is, of course, her singing), but she based it on her crappy 'High School' Latin, hence the jumbled up translation. Because, frankly, you try and translate any Latin straight and not end up with something very different when back in English.

  • @Ghostlyghostgamer Her name is Ellen MacLain. Just to let you know. :)

  • @GreenThunderLuigi wait... she was saying this?

  • @GreenThunderLuigi Thank you!

  • @GreenThunderLuigi what language is that?

  • @scaper12123 It's Latin.

  • @nintendork2000 wa....are you nuts? this song is amazing. i can't listen to it enough

  • @nintendork2000 Are you noticing the range and abilities of this singer? There's digital rounding of the notes to create a "digitalized"/"robotic"/"muffled/low-fi" sound in spite of a very controlled and naturalistic voice. This singer is talented--that's no question--and the editors modified the sound to give likeness to the character that is supposed to be lamenting: PotatOS--the result of a complex machine being reduced and confined to a potato. The sound is haunting and surreal.

  • @GreenThunderLuigi Sorry but that is a very vague and at times completely wrong translation...

  • @realaeonzero They just said that it was a rough translation. :/

Of course it's not going to be perfect. Not every translation is correct, for a lot of languages have the same words for different meanings.

  • @MoonStar031 You missed the bit that says 'at times completely wrong'. The singer said that she used a mix of Italian and Latin in the song. I speak both and I can assure you there is very little of either in that text. The only words that are in the song 100% are 'potato lacrimosa' and 'anima evicta'.

On top of that, the English has little connection with the original text.

I have been looking everywhere for the lyrics, but apparently they have never been disclosed.

  • @realaeonzero

The voice actress openly admits that she was singing 'high school latin' AKA nonsense. The song SOUNDS sad, regardless of whether the vocals actually have some linguistic meaning...

  • @crabfight No doubt, a masterpiece in my opinion, as a song but also cause it fits in the whole bittersweet feel of the Portal games.

All I'm saying, I love good music with good lyrics and that translation is all over the internets. As someone that can tell, I'm saying it's not correct. That is all.

  • totally putting this on facebook :D

  • OMG GLaDOS IS GIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ...I have to be the one to say it, don't I?

Well, the good news is Ellen wrote this HERSELF. Seriously. As well as the end song.

The bad news is, she wrote this based on, as she said, "bad high-school Latin". Good luck with the translation-it's gonna be pretty garbled.

  • all I get is potato lacrimosa and anima evicta, which means " won over the soul", now I'm hooked to figure the rest out... What a gorgeous song.

  • Sniper's a damn lucky man. :D

  • 1 person is a moron

  • @nope38 "1 person is a moron" Perhaps Wheatley hit the dislike button.

  • @benzzodude WHEATLEY HAS A YOUTUBE?!

  • @devinsatur Sure, he is a "computer" sort of, I guess.

  • @devinsatur what the?

  • You know this is pretty much gibberish. Latin gibberish. That sounds beautiful. :)

  • @MasterFen006 She really does deserve a hand. Between co-op and campaign, she put in an insane amount of work, far more than any VA usually would. I mean, close to, what, six hundred lines? Not to mention four songs. Anyone who's reading this comment, stop for a moment to give Ms. McClain a hand.

  • @bigfatcarp93 Mrs.* McLain. She's married to the voice actor of the Sniper from TF2

  • @bigfatcarp93 Ms? She's married

  • @Skullshadow99 To John Patrick Lowrie if I recall...who voiced over our favorite Australian, Mundy the Sniper from Team Fortress 2 (his name could've been Laurence, but it's speculation).

  • @bigfatcarp93 Also she's the TF2 announcer and the Combine Dispatcher in Half-Life 2. And she's an opera singer in real life (the Olympics of singers). I'm sure you knew that bigfatcarp93 and I also am sure other people posted that, but still, it bears mentioning what a cool friggin lady she is everytime. Also her husband? He's the sniper.

  • @bigfatcarp93 *claps* Oh good, my slow clapping SFX still works.

But in all seriousness, kudos to McLain :)

  • @bigfatcarp93 You mean Mrs. McLain? She's married to John Patrick Lowrie who, for example, voiced Sniper in TF2.

  • @nuttex My comment is three months old. You're not the first person to remind me of that, BELIEVE me.

  • Comment removed

  • what language?

  • Oh, gosh, it sounds so... haunting. Ellen McLain wrote the lyrics to the song herself. She's a wonderful singer... =)

  • If I was her, and I was singing this song, I would cry after I was done singing.

    Why?

This song is somewhat beautiful, and I would be sad being alone and being eaten by a bird.

  • Sounds like a slower version of Cara Mia at some parts O_o

  • when does this play again?

  • @Axelotl38 when you are in old aperture and if you go back to the menu this plays in the backround

  • I feel sorry for GLaDOS...

  • I didn't know this had lyrics to it for a while. I thought it was just an oboe/clarinet.

  • portal 2 have a really good soundtrack

  • Sounds like Latin...

    Its just....Spooky....and...chilling...But....Beautiful...

I just sat there in utter silence and listened...It moved me so much, I actually think that GLaDOS has a soft side underneath all her hatred...

Ellen McLain did an amazing job of this...This is just beautiful...

  • for a song that literally makes no sense, it is hauntingly beautiful

  • this song is so incredible sad...

like an epic war without any hope to win

  • Portal 2

    Portal Two

    POrTAl TwO

    POTATO

    mindblown.

  • @NinjaRacoonDelta2

I think a part of my soul died from sadness imagining that D:

  • Game of the year? Certainly - It has a freakin' singing potato!

    ...and Chell.

Oh, And Wheatley - can't forget him either!

  • @MasterFen006 I just wish it was not partially gibberish, but all meaningful.

  • @V2Blast Well, Ellen Mclain did claim it was done in her "poor, high-school Latin".

  • It's so weird that, if you're not listening for lyrics, it just sounds instrumental... but after a while, you can't deny the presence of a lamenting female voice.

  • This song makes me think of Carolines life and GLaDOS rediscovering her old life.

  • This is not a song you test to, this is a song you CRY to. I have no idea what she's saying but it crushes my stone heart.

  • I don't remember hearing this in the game. When did it start playing it? :<a

  • @Deitiy666 It plays in the main menu from chapter 6-7.

  • If this wasn't a Portal 2 song,I'd name it "Melody of the forever doomed" or "Sonata of the Forever Doomed".

  • Pretty sure the second line is "potatOS dolorosa" ie grieving and/or suffering potatOS

  • This must be played at my funeral

  • @Mclarenboy100

Okay, but anyone who studied classical languages (or related fields) is going to wonder how hauntingly beautiful music about sad potatoes perfectly expresses the life of the dearly departed.

Or hey, maybe it fits perfectly! I guess you'd be the best judge of that, wouldn't you? xD

Still, this may be an instance where not knowing the lyrics is preferable. It's supposed to be part bad Latin, part gibberish anyway, right?

  • Hmm. Who would have though a Sci Fi game would give you a song you could easily imagine Buddhist monks meditating too?

  • I'm taking Latin :D

  • I'm gonna break the replay button by listening to this over and over...

  • I could easily imagine a regretful potatOS singing this while in the pit of the facility.

  • why does portal 2 soundtracks remind me left 4 dead

  • @Stolemyusename

Made by the same composer.Mike Morasky

  • i think i hear "tristis anima" at :55, which would translate into "sad soul"

can't figure what comes next, though, aside from another tristis.

can you imagine listening to mclain sing this in a recording booth? the very end still gives me chills even after listening to it so many times, damn.

  • Man, I wish they played this when you entered the area where the crow took her... unless my memory is completely failing me and they did.

  • @NelStone1 I could just imagine GLaDOS thinking she was about to die a slow, painful death, singing this song as a desperate cry for help from Chell. That's kind of depressing. *replays with that in mind* WAAAAAH!

  • @NinjaRacoonDelta2 omg that is soo depressing to think of GLaDOS lost in the bowels of apeture science.. alone in a ENDLESS cave filled with thousands of man made rooms and test spheres and damaged machine noises and old rotting equipment and fire and scrap metal. waiting alone, unable to move until the juice in the potato is used up and she dies slowly as the last echo of her cry fades into the scilence of the void. MAN portal is soooo freakin' EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @dodo545545 Wow.

  • @noodnic im not sure.. is that an insult or a complement?

  • @dodo545545 It's so deep...

  • @noodnic i know... VALVe is AWSOME ;) thats why im addicted to portal. its art man. every last second of the game.

  • Ellen McLain said herself that the lyrics for this are in her "bad high-school" Latin.

That said, I love the ambiance of the background noise, the soft hum of the depth, and then hearing PotatOS sing herself a song of sorrow. I just imagine her being carried by that crow, making up lyrics as she's taken away into the depths of Aperture, where her design, concept, and personality thrived.

  • when does this come up in the game, if it does?

  • @LidsAreFun

It's hard to hear, but I believe at some point when your in the old Aperture, you can hear this in the distance.

  • @LidsAreFun this plays in one of the random main menu screens after you beat portal 2

  • Ellen Mclain said that is half made Latin up and half gibberish.

Really nice song. It's sad and lonely.

  • I really LOVE the Portal's secrets.

    A lot of mistery :D

  • If someone is trying to translate this song, I would recommend listening to the a Capella version. Look up the video "Glados singing" in youtube. It posts a soundfile found in the game. it would make your life easier than to try and filter out the song.

  • Ellen Mclain wrote the lyrics herself in Latin. :)

  • @Doggiecutes Her bad high-school latin!

  • I know the whole song is probably latin/italian, but does anyone else think the last word is "goodbye"?

  • I adore this song, along with the Turret Opera. I hope Turret opera is also on the soundtrack.

Vol 3 needs to hurry and get here :(

  • Lament: A passionate expression of grief.

Sad soul, weeping potato. It makes sense.

  • *sees "Remix this Video" button*

......since when could we do that?

  • you're not gonna believe this:

    Potato is latin for "drinker".

    XD

...but I'm pretty sure she's singing that word in english. O_o"

Anyways, I'm glad this song finally has a name so I can tell my friends to look it up instead of telling them to type in "menu song the fall portal 2" XP

  • Someone ask Valve to tell us what language this is in and what the lyrics are in the language being sung!

  • @DustyOldRoses

That sounds good to me! The second one kinda sounds like "Tristis de potato" but I'm not sure if that makes sense in Latin haha

  • 0:55

    "Tristis anima (???ta)

    Tristis de (???)"

Tristis, Latin for "sad". I THINK I hear "anima" (soul). The third term in that line I can't make out but whatever it is it would either be describing soul or assigning the soul to something, so the beginning of this line could either be "Sad ___ soul" or "Sad soul of ___ ". Since the declension of "anima" and "???ta" end the same, I'd go with the former. "Sad ___ soul".

3 years of Latin under my belt, but it's WAY fuzzy. :P

  • Amazing...This song actually brought a tear to my eye... I know this may sound silly, but I can actually imagine POTaDOS sitting in that bird's nest and singing this before Chell shows up. Huh... I think this is actually the first time I've felt so badly for a video game character- and a semi- villain at that!

    -And those last few notes HIT ME SO HARD MAN. ;_;

  • Perfect music to read creepypasta to.

  • I love this song so much. The first time I heard it on the main menu screen of "The Fall," I sat in awe for 10 minutes as it looped and was filled with a deep sadness. It is beautiful. I need to know the lyrics!

  • Okay, the first words are definitely Potato Lacrimosa (Weeping Potato) Potato... (can't make out the rest).

Huh... Weeping potato. That's not a phrase I ever expected to come across in my lifetime...

  • @RandomJayne I think it's more like ''Too-ta-too, ty-dona-crisma''

  • @TheMushrumable I clearly hear Potato Lacrimosa... Given the context of the game it appears in, and how autotuned her voice is... The main question is; what's the next line? What are the rest of the lines?! I demand lyrics, Valve!

  • @Ayelis Yeah, me too! :DD

  • @RandomJayne look up "Ghost Story" from the portal 2 soundtrack.

it's nothing but the vocals, and much clearer. i hope you'll be able to decipher the lyrics from there!

  • @MasterFen006 I agree so much on both of those points! Excellent music adds such a depth to Valve games that I feel like other developers just can not perfect. And I just want to listen to this song forever :)
