Players are judged on their impact of the game, not just on their winnings. Waldner is a prime example of that. He was the only player who gave the Chinese headaches, from one generation to another. Though they had great players, none of them could easily beat Waldner. It was always tough to beat him. Waldner became less of a threat when the serving rule was changed, so did Liu Guoliang. Thereafter, he was no longer a threat, especially with the current generation of Chinese players.
I feel sorry for Kong to allow Wang to come back. It must have hurted him really bad. Well, the same thing happened to Liu Guoliang when Kong came back from a 2-0 deficit to win the 1995 WC.
@KaxMisha mate, u sound like the moron. Waldner is a legend and 'evergreen' in the eyes of THE CHINESE. if that doesnt hit home somewhere in ur head, then u CLEARLY need help with some TT basics :)
No one touches Waldner....even an amateur at TT knows this.....so neway, its evident no one would be reading wat u write, so dont bother ! :)
@Claire1Rogers Look, you can't even spell properly, so accusing me of sounding like a moron is bit silly. As for me and TT basics, you should know that I know Mikael Appelgren - and to a lesser extent Waldner himself - personally, and I also know Alf Knutsson, who was their coach when they were children, so my basics are just fine. The fact that Guo Yuehua is the greatest player of the sponge era is unmistakable, as he would have won four World Championships in a row had Chine not implemented
@KaxMisha It´s fairly annoying how you frequently accuse people of not being able to spell properly. I think you know well that when people write "u" instead of "you" or "ur" instead of "you´re", they do so as a result of indifference or laziness.
As for who is the better table tennis player, it can most surely be discussed, both Waldner and Wang are great players.
@Claire1Rogers the retarded "friendship policy". As it is, he reached four straight finals (1977-1983), dumped the first two to inferior Japanese players because of the idiotic policy described above, and won the last two against teammate Cai Zhenhua. Basically everyone with a solid understanding of table tennis (beyond "OMFG WALDNER IS THE GREATEST" idiocy) agrees with this assessment of Guo, including Appelgren and former Swedish national team member Roger Lagerfledt, who I also know.
@plot000000@plot000000 For a period of time, China didn't want to win more than half of the titles at the World Championships. At the time, there were seven events (MS, WS, MD, WD, XD, MT, WT). Thus, if China had won four gold medals, they would dump the rest of the events. As the Men's Singles is the last event to be decided, this happened a couple of times and Guo suffered. Neither Kohno nor Ono would even have reached the final if it was not for this retarded practice.
@Claire1Rogers As for Wang and Kong, the case is more ambiguous, I'll admit, but I would still put them ahead of Waldner, and for good reason. If you are interested in hearing why, I can PM you, as it is too long to write here (this is already my third post and I'm not even close to being done), but please, do not accuse someone with knowledge far superior to yours on the subject matter of sounding like a moron. Cheers.
Both guys are legedns of TT. But is Wang liqin the best of all times? I think JOW is more talented and Wang has more trening. Its hard to say who is better. WLQ 3 times world champion but he didnt win olympic.JOW 2 times world champ.but he won olympic (twice in final) For me is it Waldner, but for many other the best of all times is Wang Liqin.
@Claire1Rogers Yeah, they are - Wang especially. There is no question about it, really. Waldner's only "advantage" over them is that he is not Chinese, thus elevating him in the eyes of morons. Objectively, they are ahead of Waldner, as is Guo Yuehua, obviously.
Wang Liqin best player in history !? Are you f....g kidding me?
He´s the greatest ! The greatest guy ever to hold a TT blade. A zillion times better
than Waldner. The only player in TT history to have a 100% technique.I didn´t say that, Guoliang said that and I totally agree with him.Such an elegant style of play more graceful than a ballerina..

@cdilluminati1 I respect your opinion, but you need to know that most important thing in table tennis is winning, not style. In 2003, he lost against Werner Schlager - and that was a while ago. Today, he cannot even beat such players as Michael Maze and Jun Mizutani.
@ttCrawsaive Hi i have many more matches from this wttc. I would love to upload them on youtube for everybody to see. However they are all on VHS. Do you know how to convert them?

@hopscotch810 As it comes from an idiot who cannot spell "you're" and who knows nothing about table tennis, I think I'll survive that judgement.

@DuchDoby Ummm.... No, Guo Yuehua is clearly the best of all time and it's not even close. Both Wang and Kong are clearly ahead of Waldner, though.
