  • Gundam isn't more realistic than VOTOMS.

Yes, Gundam uses the giant space colonies to restrict the story within the solar system, making it more plausible, but the mechas themselves are far moreso in VOTOMS.

  • @Takeshi357 I was originally only referring to the 08th MS Team, which takes place in the desert and jungles of Earth. Gundam Series in general, VOTOMS is more realistic.

  • @Takeshi357 the Gundams look like super robots a little the VOTOMS look like something the army could be using soon

  • @primusvsunicron1

    At least Scopedogs do...

    Not too big.

    Only fast with boosters

Use conventional military weapons like guns and missiles.

Require proper uniform with helmet and gas mask.

    This could actually work...

  • I would think that arguments about the realism of a setting in which combat is fought primarily by bipedal giant robots are automatically invalid.

  • Chirico is a bad ass. I donot need to say more.

  • Why are the best animes the underrated ones?

  • @AnimeMetalFan1

Because life isn't fair. Though, it does let you be the Moses of quality animation to your friends.

  • the first time i saw this intro on youtube I was curious.. then 3 years later im a fan.

  • Smell of gunpowder, rotten water, burned iron...

Screaming of guns, howitzer, missile, and friend.

Here, we are in the battlefield.

  • This series is kinda like Battletech in a way

  • むせる

  • @noodlezombie

I don't think he meant classic Macross (What black-hearted blaggard could hate on Ijima?)

    He meant Frontier .

  • meseru~

  • A great series, one of my faves for sure and one that endures because it's a dark, edgy look at the future and thank Heaven, the main character ISN"T some whiney, doe-eyed high schooler who always wins! The mecha were great as well, no need to over detail everything with meaningless fins, wings and glowy parts! Less is more IMO.

  • I found this anime playing Super Robot Taisen Z2 (PSP)

Chirico is one of the best piolots in the game. Very cool.

I'm gonna watch it,looks cool. The music is awesome too lol

  • Chirico Cuvie : The Duke Togo of Mecha Pilots

  • @Farvan893 Actually that's the guy from the Mellowink OVA. Kills enemies for revenge with nothing but an anti-tank rifle.

  • @Dynaman21 True but he Golgo within the series , but comparing Chirico to Amuro Ray , Roy Fokker & other aces & pilots (notably since the inclusion in Z2... I would say hes like Duke Togo amongst all of em in the Z2 Lineup )

  • in votoms the pilots skill is important... even in a crappy scopedog with crappy battlecard. The ability to addapt on the situation.

Sunsoft had recently made an ova this year for Chirico's storyline called "alone again".

    What a devotion!

  • MUSERU

  • disposable Robot,that`s Votoms

  • I'm loving all that style from 0:01 to 0:15.

  • They definitely don't make anime like this any more.Afther watching the whole serise recently it is one of the best from the 80's.Now,where's that so called update to votoms i thought i heard a rumor there was gonna be one.

  • I feel bad for all the Votoms chirico has used.

  • museru^^

  • I'ts about fucken time votoms make its long awaited SRW debut and I'll be able to order it since i don't need a japanese psp

  • Let's play at SRW Z part 2!! on PSP.

  • i loved this show. i'm no stranger to dated animation, but into the 3rd story arc on sunsa a LOT of footage is recycled episode-to-episode. that said, has great story, mecha, and music .

  • This has been one of my favorite episodes ever and Chirico Cuvie as one of my favorite protagonists ever.

This is probably one of the only mecha series that focused more on the skill of the pilot and character in general as a "soldier" instead of giving him some souped up mecha and trying to drive a plot around it saying "HIS SKILL IS WHAT MAKES HIM SUCH AN AMAZING PILOT" when the freaking mecha is like 1,000,000 to 1 compared to other mechas on stand-alone specs.

  • Chirico!!!

  • The song is stuck on head. I heard it had inspired Heavy Gear.

  • proof that good thing are made in 1983 :p

  • I get this strange sadness watching this opening.

Partly because the DVDs of this are now long out of print and it will be an absolute bitch to find them all, but also because looking back, this is the sort of thing the anime fandom loved during the 1980s. I was just born too late for it.

  • How about Balatack, Vifam, Galient, Optimus Prime and Galantic Formula?

They need to go too, cause Gundam 00 and Macross are gonna be there.

  • Put VOTOMS in Super Robot Wars. He needs to go there.

  • Terada wants VOTOMS and Patlabor but they don't really fit.

It'd be great to finish off Getter Emperor with Chirico unloading his entire arsenal though.

  • @GetterRay =\ man you're drunk. Votoms mecha can't even compare with first getter robo. Getter emperror will smash entire planet with millions of this mechs.

  • @smokeTehHed Nonsense, Votoms is so real it turns everything it touches into a real robot.

  • @Duothimir Wisemanlol

  • @Fullmetalking86 See Brave Saga 1 and 2 it has Votoms, Galient, Dougram, and all the yuushas and is pretty much a SRW rip

  • I liked this show a lot, until the bodycount started reaching ridiculously epic proportions. That constant and desperate act of one-upsmanship that afflicts so many anime/manga is depressing.. Itto Ogami of Lone Wolf & Cub ends up killing 1/3 of Japan by the end of the series (more or less), whereas earlier chapters were more focused on single combat rather than him massacring 50 samurai at a time.

    Still, it's good retro action.

  • To be fair, it could be worse; Space Runaway Ideon ended with *the entire world ending*

  • @superbus1929

And that's why Tomino got the nickname "kill e'm all"

  • Classic, but you guys can't forget about Dougram and Layzner. Same director, 80's "hard" sci-fi, gritty mature stuff. Both are being actively subbed... hope they get finished soon! Ryōsuke Takahashi deserves way more recognition than he gets, for sure. Tomino wasn't Sunrise's only good director back then.

  • Currently watching this right now. Srsly, nothing better than 80's mecha.

  • @SacredEdge Try out 80/90`s space opera with "Legend of the galactic heroes" you wont be disapointed.

  • @SacredEdge I wondered what happened to the detailed/gritty mech style from the 80,s and 90,s everything looks stylized now without any mechanical detail!

  • I watched it back then too! That was where I first saw this seiries and fell in love with it. It was channel 14 here in WA state back then. It's long been gone now, gut was replaced by channel 76 AZN, but that channel went away about two years ago :(

  • I watched this pretty recently when Gray Phantom subbed it, but man this show is GREAT. Golden age of mecha anime at its finest.

Also excellent setting, manly protagonist and fights that make Code Geass cry in the corner in shame.

  • Votoms ranks as Number 3 on my favorite real robot shows after Gundam and Macross.

  • was this released on dvd in the US?

  • Yes it was but unforturnetly the company that published it went out of buisness, so it's hard to find.

  • "THE BEST REAL ROBOT SHOW.

No whiney bishounen. no lolis, no singers thinking they're important. Only true 1983 badassery and HOT BLOOD. "

  • Yeah! By what i think only show that comes close is "Legend of the galactic heroes"

  • but how come they never put it in the Another Century's Episode game

  • @leo11lim they did put the votoms scopedog as enemy unit

  • @smokeTehHed

    Whiny bishounen? Ypsilon.

  • @smokeTehHed Three words: 08th MS Team, complain about the lasers, but it is the setting that makes it real. Desert and jungles and cities.

  • @Primus2X well, modern lasers already can has blue-spectrum 1 kilowatt lasers (which you can buy for your home) which can handle slicing metal in 5-15 cm lenght. Give it some time, to make special crystals with low gas-disturbance factor and probably we will have good lasers which can burst trough ~half of mile leaving tank cut in half.

  • @smokeTehHed Even the Gundam shows to take mostly in space are among the most realistic robot animes. Gundam doesn't involve inter-stellar wars like VOTOMS or Aliens like Macross, I think it was either Gundam X or Turn A that had an alien. Anyway Gundam's wars are either on Earth or just in the Solar System.

  • @Primus2X compare to votoms. Gundam becoming some sort of super mecha.

  • @smokeTehHed I guess with the newtypes/coordinators , but that provides story elements such as dealing with racism , genetics etc.

Gundam is realistic not only because of setting but also because we can relate to it.

  • @smokeTehHed We are forgetting a show even more realistic than Gundam and VOTOMS...Patlabor

  • @Primus2X Bullshit. Patlabor has mechs which has too much maneuverability, and also - it miserably fails due usage of tons of anime stereotypes. Such as main hero...that one is plain big-eyed japaneese mid-school (hi-school) student with 2-dimensional personality which rapidly moves to 1-dimensional. Votoms has badass mech pilot which is main concern of plot.

  • @smokeTehHed So? That does not make it more more "real" than Gundam or VOTOMS, just less badass.

  • @Primus2X Also that is what I mean when I say Gundam is more realistic than VOTOMS. VOTOMS is an interstellar war, Gundam is an interplanetary war, Patlabor is set on Earth.

  • @Primus2X let's just say that in timeline Votoms should be in middle between Patlabor and gundam. Anyway later will be Mazinkaizer SKL.

  • @smokeTehHed wut?

  • great show, i wish they had a bigger budget so they didn't have to recycle footage episode after episode :(

  • Great... of all the big ones like macross and mospeada... votoms has the best plot and story and it's the most violent in terms of deathrate and kill or be killed^^

And AT's are technically more realistic.

  • votoms goood gundam better oh vey

  • Absolutely the best "real robot" anime EVER!

  • THE BEST REAL ROBOT SHOW.

No whiney bishounen. no lolis, no singers thinking they're important. Only true 1983 badassery and HOT BLOOD.

  • so you've listened to people talk about Getter and you think thats what makes a robot show? FAIL. And this is coming from someone named GETTER RAY.

  • No, I was only stating how awesome VOTOMS was. VOTOMS has none of the things that has made Gundam terrible. it and Patlabor are the pinnacle of Real Robot.

  • i agree, but i must say that the first gundam was not a bad series...at least not for me....

  • i dont see why anyone should have anything against tomino's msg's. i love votoms AND MSG0079 AND Zeta, but little else.

  • Yeah.. votoms is probably the most violent in terms of killing without good cause and no one is a hero (red shoulder video on the unmanned spaceship), Chirico used to be a butcher when he was a Red Shoulder... he admitted he was doing the same thing in the past somewhere else.

This true down to earth setting really is appealing to me. No more crappy heroes that save the day in a giant robot, it's down to the human side of a by war torn out guy with a dark past.

  • love the song...love the ending theme....love the anime....love how everything blows up in it hehehehehehehe thanx for upload!!

  • I love this.

  • Love this opening.

  • The most realistic mecha anime I've ever seen. I recommend it to anyone who's a fan of robots, though not the super types with flashy poses and beams.

  • Hey, do you think you can upload clips from the show?
