  • Giventhatb I livein the Asheville area and we sometimes getnews fromthat area,I can tell you that generation is still extremely pissed at the way it turnedout. Good style of video though. The bike is much better than those done in cars. (Keybrd still screwedc up :)

  • First time I did road to onowhere, it was a twilight zone experience. Your vid didnt quite give the wukderness feel one gets after the tunnel. For those curious, the road leading to the tunnel is much like the Blue Ridge Parkway, without the overlooks.

In critique mode, I wish you had developed the history in more detail and accuracy.

(Sorry for typos. Keyboard is raggedy.)

  • @JudgeKnot I went back the following morning in a heavy fog. Positively creepy!

As to your critique, given that I like to keep my vids relatively short, I really took the story as far as I could for one installment. As for accuracy, I'm sure the story of this road has many twists, and will vary some from teller to teller. I did read up a fair bit on the subject from numerous sources, and though I left out a lot, I'll stick by the general accuracy of my 'nutshell' version.

  • Wow, I bet that's cool. When are you going to go back there to NC to ride again? Where are you from? What kind of roads do you go to?

  • Yeah, I like because you can see the forest of the Great Smoky Mountians, are you from North Carolina? Or were you just visiting?

  • @FanofNavy1 There are many other roads in the area that provide better views of the mountains and forests, but this is an interesting and fun bit of road to check out. I don't live in NC, but I generally visit twice a year for 4-5 days of riding.

  • Did you like it??

  • @FanofNavy1 The road? Yeah, it's pretty cool, but goes nowhere!

  • I went up there on the Friday afternoon since I remember it rained a lot on that day. On the same Friday but later in the evening I got caught in a really bad thunderstorm at Stecoah and had to ride back to Franklin in it.

It was some serious weather to be out in but I had no choice, since after the evening thunderstorms comes the fog/mist which rolls right in making visibility very difficult.

  • @RideCamVids It's coming back to me now ... the Friday storms jogged my memory. After 4 days of perfect riding conditions, I was driving the van back towards home on that day, and I ran into such a mass of severe weather that I pulled off and got a room for the night.

  • Ok,,, it was a few days leading up to memorial day when I was in the region, so when were you there.

My video started by the billboard sign and I was filming it, then though I'll stop the video for now as we cant be near the end yet, only to round that bend and see the barrier in the road, what luck .

I got a few photos of the tunnel area and walked through it as well just to where you turned around in your video.

  • @RideCamVids I'm pretty sure that this vid was shot on Tues. or Weds. the week before Memorial Day. I generally try to take my spring trip right after the holiday, but the weather forecast for that week was too good to pass up!

  • Great video, I took a run up there this year in May and have a video of it as well but sadly I cut the video short and so I didn't take the end by the tunnel.

  • @RideCamVids It was last May when I shot this. Maybe we crossed paths somewhere!

  • Not really the Story I was told by locals but ok....... something about a guy who was a millionair that bought the mountain and it was his road to his home that was going to be built, and he died before it was finished... the I have been there... The mountain is said to be hunted now.. I have been there with a bunch of friends at night.. we did a bunch of picture, video and sound samples.. got a LOT of orbs nothing on video and a little sounds just could not make it out..

  • I would have been worried about a rattle snake in the tunnel

    Great Video Thanks for sharing.

  • @CRP304 Great. Now I'll be worried about rattle snakes next time I go in there! :)

  • Hang on. Did you say they got paid to NOT build the road? Wow, how do I get in on that, getting paid to Not do something?

Please sir, we do not want you to go to work and be productive, we want you to do nothing and will pay you to do nothing. Sure it will cost as much as if you had produced something which could be sold, but we don't want to have products on the market, so stay home and we'll pay you just the same. Thank you for your cooperation.

    How odd.

  • @michaelrossonline It isn't really a case of anyone being paid for doing no work. After decades of wrangling, a decision was finally made to pay Swain County a monetary settlement in lieu of the road that they were promised by the federal gov't / National Park Service.

  • Love it. Discovering new stuff is like being on an adventure even if other people have seen it or know of it it is New To You!

Someone obviously maintains the road after the barrier otherwise it would be totally covered in leaf debris like the surrounding scrub. Interesting place.

  • cool vid , my next bike will be dual sport

  • @Rudyv123 Thanks. The dual sport sure opens up a lot more roads for exploring!

  • Nice video im subscribing

  • @abbazaba1979 Thanks very much!

  • Nice video !

  • @jdborton Glad you enjoyed!

  • hitting one of those turkeys wud be like hitting a bull at speed mate, easily break an ankle or summin ouchhhhhhh and ive hit some things in my time lol

  • watch out for those low flying turkeys Dp lol thanks for the trip mate, keep safe

  • @madwelshaber LOTS of turkeys around there. I had to slow down for them a few times :)

  • Great ride and awesome countryside - thanks for taking us along on that one. That road could have been custom built for bike riding. I have to agree though, its kinda good that they didn't bother to finish it. That lovely countryside will be able to continue without any new developments going in around it. The camera and audio on your new system worked perfectly. Cheers!

  • @TKTex1 Without the road, there is an enormous section of park that most of us will never get to see. It's just nice knowing it's there!

I'm really happy with the camera. It's a nice set up. :)

  • That's a beautiful ride, great scenery. Creepy tunnel. Thanks for taking us along.

  • @brotherblonde I'd imagine that most people who go through that tunnel are on foot without any light. Glad I had my headlight going for me!

  • Great bit of video, thanks for sharing with us all!

  • @cjhurrell Thanks much ... my pleasure.

  • Duffy, only you could find a smooth scenic but yet basically abandon N.C. twisty road. That was a suspenseful video, but no trap doors or bears. You need a better headlight, but the new camera is great.

  • @Spacecoastz Considering that the other paved roads in this park are quite often jammed, this road is great. Even if it is a short one and doesn't go anywhere! I wound up riding it twice, and didn't see a (moving) vehicle either time.

I could see in the tunnel a lot better than the camera did. It was pretty dark in there!

  • lots of good roads up there... toast and i ate in bryson city on our ozarks trip... lol hey we did that road too! :)

  • @chado34 Bryson City is well located for these rides. I've used it as my base on my last 2 trips.

  • That looks like a nice little road. I'll have to try get there and take a ride on it when I'm down there later this year. Thanks for the info.

  • @seekinsoul Yeah, I'm glad I stumbled across it. Definitely worth a short side trip.

  • That is one cool tunnel! Interesting stuff. I may have to pay a side visit there in August.

  • @britex3186 On its own, the road may not merit a huge detour, but if you're in the area, you should definitely check it out.

  • That was awesome. I hope to move to NC and am looking for places of interest. THANKS!

  • @1motherclucker Thanks. I wouldn't mind moving down there myself!

  • your videos are really great

  • @dtmbcorp Thanks, I appreciate that.

  • Wow that is very cool.

  • @ToastToGo Yeah, it was very cool and a bit eerie at the same time.

  • I think I was on that road last October. I'm not terribly sure because I kept getting lost in that darn park. I'm always getting lost.

  • @Fudmottin Of all the paved roads within the park, this one is my new favorite. It may not go anywhere, but neither does it have the massive traffic like the rest of the park.

  • Very interesting video DP. I understand theres also a railroad tunnel and several buildings that are underwater. These are exposed from time to time when they drain the lake to inspect the dam. Apparently, it is built entirely of concrete with no steel reinforcement and has to be checked for cracks.

  • @MAG315 I was hoping that the lake would be low when I visited so I could see a couple of the old structures. It was full to the brim!
