Once every year in winter I sit and read Le Morte d'Arthur aloud a chapter at a time each night with Joschka the dachsound in my lap. I play a couple of Vaughn Williams short symphonies during my read each night in the background, but when I come to the end and Arthur's death, I play this. And Joschka takes on a very doleful countenance and lays his chin on my thigh. This is a very good recording, and Eugene Ormandy is the right conductor.
To me, this piece is like experiencing a mighty cascade of awe. It's just incomparable to anything else. The sheer wonder for nature instilled in the work is paramount to perfection. If (in this day and age) it is acceptable to be proud to be English, then this should be our reason why.
i can't stop listening to this amazing piece. i played it in high school, and rediscovered it. it makes me want to pick up my violin, and play again. :)
I am just an old beat cop! But I always keep my radio in my car tuned to a classical music station! We had a guy that we arrested one night that had to sit in my car for a long time in handcuffs! The doper was going crazy listening to this!....I love it! thanks for posting!
@2906Sarge If I ever get arrested I hope it's by you. KUSC (So. Cal. classical station) is always on in my car, too. :-) Mind you, I have no plans on doing anything that would result in my arrest. :-D
The orchestra I am in at my high school is playing this! I'm excited because I've only been playing cello for a year, so this is a challenge for me. Even more of a challenge is Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings! I can't wait! :D
When I played this piece the part from 4:50 to 5:06 never failed to make my spine tingle. We interpreted it differently but I still feel the chill when I hear that section in most performances.
I just uploaded a time-lapse of clouds over the San Juan Mountains, set to this fabulous composition. The performance was from the Next Generation orchestra, Fort Lewis College, July 23, 2011. I worked on it for months, trying to capture in video my feelings for this indescribably beautiful piece of music. Please visit my channel and see what you think - I hope you will be pleased.
Many people tell of being moved to tears by this composition. I am no exception. Last week we had the pleasure of hearing the New Conservatory Of Dallas student group perform it at Fort Lewis College in Durango. CO. (My daughter played cello in the performance) Even though I had a splitting headache going into the concert hall, the pain vanished and I experienced constant chills throughout my body. I wept like a baby. On my channel I have another excellent rendition by the EPSYOs in 2009.
I've always found it fascinating how VW gets that organ like sonority from strings in those momentary hushes. Among many recordings I have of this a Vernon Handley reading reduces me to a tearful wreck, and there is something really special happening in the famous1960s Barbirolli version too.
I first heard this a week ago and it really spoke to me. Thanks so much for putting it here where I can listen as much as I want!

The ending is so awe-inspiring and moving I can hardly stand it. This is the song I want played at my funeral.

I'd have to say that my favorite part of this song is the silence at the end, it's just so moving.

Brilliant interpretation by Eugene Ormandy - one of the best in recent years.
