  • In my opinion maintaining embusen is only a part of the architecture of the kata and was introduced by Nakayama sensei during the inception of JKA (1949). The essence of Ki-ai, embusen etc. is only related to tournaments and competitions. It has nothing to do with Bunkai. If we follow Asai sensei,s kata, there are lots of stance slides which looks awkward to most of the shotokan practitioners but almost could deny the effectiveness of the kata. OSS!

  • Hello. Thanks for the video.

This was a solid demonstration of this kata.

However, from one student of Shotokan to another, you need to work on maintaining the straight embusen line for this kata.

If you look at the black line behind you at the start of the kata, you are at least 10 inches away from it by the end of the kata.

I would suggest being more precise with the positioning of your feet as you step from side to side and when you place your feet after Fumikomi.

    Best wishes.

  • Great video, thank you Martin! Are there any good karate books you would recommend?
