  • this video sucks ! I love the song but dame they kinda missed the point in this video :P

  • awesome song, awesome band

    but absolutely terrible video

  • 1:14 -- lucky Colin ;)

  • Soft, supple nipple suckling in the topple tower.

  • This was probably the worst video I have seen professionally done. Its to the point where they could take acting tips from Lil Wayne. seriously terrible.

  • @spacecommander12 I appriciate your opinions but, would you mind keeping them to yourself? Thank you. :)

  • @Mayuchan412 first, i mean, i guess not. second, you probably don't appreciate my comments you passive aggressive pussy. third, i wont because the comments section doesn't imply positive comments only. finally, apparently the acting is meant to be ironic so suck it, bitch.

  • @spacecommander12 you're way out of line. god. you must be exhausting in real life. yeah, i'm totally ready for you to call me names. because you've already proved your comments to be worthless by cursing at a complete stranger who made a lighthearted joke with you.

  • Balensee I, I, I...

  • You beloing, to the gahng, and you say you can't break awaiiey, but ihm heeur with my hands on my hahr...

Talk about a fucking affected manner of speech, or in this case singing.

  • @nineskyy Hey, bitch. Don't like, don't watch. It's a good song and he has a talented voice. So, you can shut the fuck up! :)

  • I agree...

  • The guy at the beginning of the video handing the keys is what is known as a "fat bastard." He looks like a douche I wouldn't leave in charge of anything. Look at his plate. He's eating sausage! And not breakfast links but fat, gooey sausage!

  • I mean, I like the Decemberists, I do.

    But their acting is awful.

"Francesca and I are running away" Really? Francesca?

    You theatrical bastards.

  • @topazinmanhattan Besides - quick to defend the Decemberists? Somebody mad? I think we might have another whiny fat ass on our hands.

  • @topazinmanhattan What I say stands. This is pop music designed to appeal to a narrow sensibility, thinly masquerading as the work of true bohemians, so of course it moves lots of units. The fact that you bought into it, much less mistook it for the genuine hard work of authentic musicianship reflects poorly on your artistic sense, and the fact you like the Decemberists in particular reflects poorly on your aesthetic discrimination.

  • @nineskyy barf...

  • @nineskyy

you are a f*cking idiot. Their name is an homage to the decembrist revolt of 1825.

And I hope you can get over the fact that you are nameless and talentless and begin to appreciate those of us who are not only gifted but hardworking

  • Wonderful. More of the poopy music of the Decemberists. That's Italian. It's pronounced "deh-cHem-ber-ists" like Gucci, etc. More fat guys with guitars, basically just fat America playing more poppy melodies to sell more records. No meaning or substance.

  • song of the day!!

i like this tune. the decemberists are pretty good in concert too. i like when he tells her to "wait for the stone on her window"- it reminds me of high school.

  • I don't know why, but this is more how I envisioned Scott Pilgrim Versus the World when I read the comic and I couldn't get into the movie. Curses Decemberists for ruining something completely unrelated by the sheer power of your awesomeness!

  • How did the chick suddenly randomly die??

  • @tampicochan they sot her in the back of the head..trust e i o soooooooo much about this video

  • @tampicochan The man in the blue suit looked like he was getting a gun out of his jacket. I reckon they shot her because of something that guy had done, or owed them for. ;)

  • Whoa that really looks like the hotel in left 4 dead 2 :D

  • @bubbajimmy8 Its a typical setup for motel's.........

  • @ETHANIOSAURUS good point.

  • the video told a similar but different story from the song... it was distracting. not a great video

  • The true gangsters, unlike those rap singers with their baggy pants. The perfect crime.

  • Is the guy at 2:38 the same guy in kisschasy turnaround ?

  • What a really cool bass line

  • For such a TOTALLY KICK ass song I was disappointed with the video...

  • @picklecatcus for real, it was so bad. nonsensical and lacking any real creativity

  • when did the evil popcorn man from free willy join the decemberists?

  • This song is so good. This music video isn't so good.

  • fuckin crippin'

    thumbs up essey!

  • should've made a romeo and juliette video

  • I like Colin's fight scene toward the end. He totally rips off his pose from Mickey Rourke's alley scenes in Barfly, but to great effect.

He's all like, "I'm gonna pretend to kick the shit out of these actors, and then I'm gonna record a solo EP of Morrissey covers."

    Which he did!

  • I really enjoy watching two fat guys having a serious conversation.

  • Reminds me of Romeo And Juliette sorta.

  • Franchesca is one terrible actress

  • @LightsOfBohemia

That could be because she is a part time member of the band.

  • @LightsOfBohemia Its Francesca.

  • Love all the PacNW references :) :)

  • amazing song.... i just wish directors could do better with actually making a video that pertains to the song a bit more.

  • @johnmorisi8 In my opinion, I found the video quite interesting, and heart-breaking...and it went with the song pretty well...

  • love love LOVE The Decemberists!

  • I agree with DarthTechGeek - this is the song that got me hepped to The Decemberists, too. Great indie punk-folk band!

  • This is real Music[:

  • Heart melting. Beautiful song, indeed.

  • Great song,Really well done video.

I like how this song makes me feel.

  • I love the sound of his voice (=

  • this is not a boy band right. so many people I know say that. But I just think theyre gay

  • Phenomenal.

  • ew very ew

  • I don't understand the video. Why did her father kill her? Can someone explain it to me?

  • @COconutheadJR the song tells the story of two lovers whose marriage is condemned by her father, and when they elope the brother (the singer's greatest enemy) attempts to shoot him when she throws herself in front of the bullet

  • @COconutheadJR Watch the directors cut of this viedo, it explains it all man. You can find it on youtube.

  • @COconutheadJR watch the directors cut. it explains why

  • Check out my cover of THE RAKE'S SONG

  • Colin Meloy is easily one of the great artists of our generation

  • @aswhiterunsblack His lyrics ARE sheer genius. English majors represent!

  • I love how all of thier songs are stories. i really love the decemberists

  • Colin Meloy is definitely one of the greatest songwriters of all time. His lyricism is sheer genius.

  • Colin Meloy sounds exactly like Dave Foley at the beginning of the video.

  • Love this band so much, was great to see them play at the BDO Perth. Lovely times. Hope they head to Oz again soon!

  • yeeah! i was there and can attest to their awesomeness live! high five for perthites :)

  • Vixca Valencia

  • awesome song!

  • To swnzpd

Look into the shins and swell season.

  • Swell Season is awesome.

  • HEY! what other bands should I look for? I really like The Decemberists, what other bands are similar to them?

  • Death cab for cutie, modest mouse, band of horses, stuff like that.

  • I Looouuuve DCFC and Modest mouse! But Band of Horses? Hmmm I'ma check em out! thanks guy!

  • no problem.

  • @swnzpd try Band of Skulls, theres a music video fo them in my channel. Check it out!

  • Try 'they might be giants" and "man or astro man" and "arcade fire"

  • i only just found the decemberists, it was through loads of people saying they were like neutral milk hotel

    who i love :)

but yeah, they sound like modest mouse / death cab for cutie

  • @swnzpd Beirut!

    Andrew Bird!

    Mountain Goats!

They're not amazingly similar but yeah look them up deffinitly

  • Look up the directors cut to find the longer version.

  • Jesus...this is the saddest video I've seen in a long time....

  • i love the decemberists, this is truly one of their finest works, i may be wrong but isnt there a longer version of this video? although i appreciate you uploading it i would be more appreciative if someone could link me the longer version. pls and thankyou

  • such a sad song

  • Tragic yet touching.

    I love this song.

  • i just noticed the first few lines were "you belong to the game," DAMNIT I JUST LOST!!!

  • gang

  • >_> ahhhh im safe

  • It's actually "you belong to the gang"

  • -drool- Oh, Mr.Meloy <3

  • Anybody else sense a little Romeo and Juliet/ West Side Story?

  • Oh, totally. I did the first time I heard this song.

  • increible el tema me encanta wn !! xd

  • Oh... I'm at a sudden loss for words...

  • *sigh* This is the song that got me into the decemberists. Great song.

  • @DarthTechGeek mee too!

  • I love that this band is from my city.

  • Did that fattish bloke in the green jacket have some kind of head related soccer accident when he was young? Or am I getting mixed up with another video?

  • Damn. They're so macabre. I love it. Just don`t burn down Portland. I plan to return.

  • great song. great video. great band.

  • The video is based on the lyrics. If u can't understand this video u have admitted to not being able to watch and think at the same time. lol I am so mean

  • lol, it kinda does.

  • I don't really care about the music video, I just came to hear it just to know if I want to buy it on iTunes. I totally am.

  • Why don't people understand that this is actually a good video and music video?

  • my name is O. Valencia, isnt that cool? i got a song with my name!

  • @carameloytrudis im so proud of you. lol

  • @gtghome i know thats lame, but i didnt know I got 20 thumbs up! thats even cooler!

  • @carameloytrudis that's so cool :D

  • @carameloytrudis no.

    jk yes

  • Your face is original.

  • theres a reson it gets used so much. its a clasic. even shakespeare coppied it from someone else

  • Yep, it's a trope as old as time. What harm? If it still makes people feel something, it's still valid.

  • funny how they are making millions off of a "lame song" and you're sitting at home writing comments about it on youtube... your credibility is astounding...

  • yes, i completely share your sentiment... common people's artistic sensibility has deteriorated, and these mediocre musicvideos are raking in cash! it's not just "funny," it's simply horrifying!

  • hahaha! Well its true that this video looks like a bad cover of some quentin tarantino film, but the song itself is a bit more than mediocre. your comment is 100% accurate, but i don't think it applies to this particular song.

  • This song is really good, and I liked the video here, but the Director's Cut video is just atrocious. [The acting at the end is ... scary bad.]

Odd, too, since I don't normally like the Decemberists, but oh well.

  • this isnt anything like the movie that played in my mind all those times i listened to the song

  • super cancion y video entretenido, que buena banda The decemberist.

  • i dont really get the music video

  • Watch the Director's Cut

  • francsesca is the daughter of a mob boss, when when she and her lover attempt to run away together, everyone works against them to set them up and capture them. when she's discovered not obeying the rules, her father kills her to end the troubles. :\

  • no she stole money from her dad, and she used the guy for protection, she didnt really love him at all.

  • They are playing in Columbia Missouri tommorrow!!!!

  • I'm just getting into this band

What would be the best album to get?

  • Picaresque is really accessible and the best. The Hazards of Love is great too, but i feel like you need to know the band more to appreciate it fully.

  • 'Hazards of love' is the album that got me into the Decemberists. So I would recommend that one. But after that one I agree with ZombieLennon and say that 'Picaresque' is the most accessible. (but I really like them all!)

  • I'm also getting into this band. I loved it ever since I listened to "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect", and realized how poetic and artful this band is. Where do you think I can get more information about this band?

  • Picaresque for sure.

  • @shakezulathemicrulah

Definately get Picaresque first. Most accessible and works best as individual songs (although Castaways and Cutouts is a close second). Hazards of Love works best when heard all the way through as an album, there aren't really any singles in the traditional sense. Picaresque has all the different sides of the Decemberists, the 10 minute epic (mariner's revenge), pop songs (we both go down together), and the acoustic folkier side (Eli).

  • The Rake's Song would count as a single, I'd think. It is sort of separate from all the other songs somehow.

  • It's just like Romeo and Juliette.

Just like the story, the video is 100% tragic.

I like the song not the vid

  • For some reason, I always pictured that the guy goes to fight the girls brother, the girl goes to stop him, some shooting happens, and the girl dies, kinda accidentally.

That's what I always pictured when I listened to this song.

Decemberists seem to have a sort of gruesome undertone to their songs, at least on The Crane Wife. Here, a father kills his own daughter. "Yankee Bayonet", a wife is singing to her dead husband. "Shankhill Butchers" is about some child killers.

  • What about the Rake's Song, the kills his own kids... pretty gruesomely too.

  • [The Shankhill Butchers was the nickname given to the Ulster Volunteer Force in Northern Ireland - they would beat/murder Catholics. The song is a warning parents would sing to their children at bedtime]

  • I think they were UDA not UVF. They liked to grab a Catholic off a Belfast street into the back of a black taxi. The victim was brought to a "romper room" - a UDA drinking club. The victim was tied to a chair on a stage in front of maybe a 100 men out for a night's drinking and "fun". The victim was slowly mutilated over the space of 4/5 hours - a death of a thousand cuts. A romper room , in reality , was a child's playroom. Can you imagine the horror of such a death.

  • It was not the entire UVF, it was a gang most of whom were also members of the UVF.

  • seeing them in a concert soon :)

  • the norva?

  • Comment removed

  • SURE it is skimpy.

  • Personally I think it should show him burning the whole city down.

  • Can't anyone just enjoy the music? Please?

  • I agree the song's ending comes together alot better

I mean it doesn't make sense that the girl was killed and he wasn't. Her father was present so he would have to sanction the killing of his own daughter and spare his enemies son. It makes sense to kill the guy, it makes bad sense but still sense to kill them both but to kill your daughter and spare your enemies son is illogical. It just makes sense for the girl to be killed by a accident...Good song still

  • Death would be sweet release to him now...

  • But from a logical stand point that makes NO sense. If you are a father/mob boss you don't kill your own daughter. Family is the second most immportant theme in the song and in a mafia setting being that the entire structure is family based. I understand the romantic notion of living without love is worse than death but as a father under his circumstances you don't think about romanticism or poetic justice, you'd think about solving the problem in this case the boy...But it's a good song still.

  • the director's cut version of the video makes more sense

  • It's because he knows that living without Francesca is more painful to him than death... I guess...

  • he killed his daughter because he knew that was the only way for him to really suffer. he didnt want to kill the guy because then the daughter would suffer and he thought the guy took advantage of her. he did that because he thought it was the only way for her to be safe from him.

  • you got it perfectly. There is an interview with the band and they explain it all in a nutshell =P

  • If you're disloyal to the family, you cease to be the family. She betrayed him. Therefore he stopped considering her his daughter (essentially just a tool for his enterprise, to be successful in the maffia you don't really do the "love" thing) so he got rid of the problem at its source. She might have done it again. The guy poses no threat once she's gone. He has no connections.

  • You got that from this video? Genius! Or would it be ingenius..?

  • Haha, nah, I just have random and fairly arbitrary insights about the maffia. But it makes sense for the video so it works here.

  • the ending of the video could of been a bit more like the chorus of the song. not at all what i envisioned when i listened to the song.

  • im sry 4 dbl posting but the mob boss kills his own daughter rarg!!!! :(

  • this is such a sad song but i luv it :(

  • This makes me sad. I love The Decemberists

  • Why are people talking about how much radiohead sucks here XD

  • I'd disagree. The only thing that's the same about Romeo and Juliet is forbidden love between families; the story itself is completely different, especially the end. It is a great song, though.
