Thank you ALL for the wonderful comments. I don't get to my Youtube inbox often. Yes, this is the Squier (which comes w/ Duncans). I am improving over "She's So Heavy" by the Beatles.
I also want to add, that this kind of tribute is the best tribute you can do. What I mean by this, is that the style of playing immediatly makes you think of Jaco. But what's really great about it is that you didn't do any jaco lines (none that I picked up on anyway), it was your own tribute from your heart and mind. Tributes don't get that much better.
Oh you are divine, Les July. You are damn cute and add that splendid talent well you are the most beautiful Being all in one delightful package. My Sweetie that sent you my way tonight, from the other/dimension I am just resonating with a vibration that has me ready for the ascention. God you are so fantastic. Thank you for sharing your gift with us. Nice ending to this one. :-)))) LOVE to you.
Jaco used to slap the hell out his bass. most folks don't know it, but he used to slap all of the time when he played with Blood Sweat & Tears. This is a fact!!!
I'd only see him slap the bass with his palm but not in the Marcus Miller way of slapping. He never recorded or performed that way. But if you say he did, i'd sure love to see it.
It was before he was the "great" Jaco of Weather Report fame. Blood Sweat & Tears was on this PBS show before I even started playing bass, mid 70s. The reason I remember it so well is because he would turn his volume down, hit chord harmonics and turn the volume up, to get a synthesizer effect. It was awesome. I didn't realize it was him until years later when I read a book o n him. He's always had the long hair and jazz bass. After he got into Prestia, he never really plucked after that...
In fact, this is as shocking as when folks find out Kenny G used to play some of the most funkiest jazz fusion on the planet with Jeff Lorber. He doesn't play it anymore during performance, but check out Jeff Lorber's late 70s/early 80s albums if you really want to hear Kenny G at his finest.
I had the distinct honor of lending Jaco some coins about a week before he died. He was walking down the street in the village with his bass on his shoulder with no cover. Just thought I'd share that.
Hate to disappoint you but it must have been a Jaco look-alike. Jaco was in a coma the week before he died. And for the three months before that, I would talk to him in the bars on Federal Highway in Ft. Lauderdale and Wilton Manors, at least two or three times a week. We used to go to an after hours club also, I wasn't there the night he was beat to a pulp but I went the following night. If I was I would have intervened because Jaco was a friend, and it still makes me sad..
Damn...you are fantastic!...but please tell me what that thing is that allows you to play certain segments & continue them while you play other parts.
It's 'Alfie', one of the very first melodies that Jaco would teach to students in order to orientate them around the idea of Melodic bass through playing melodies - it bloody works! :D
I've been playing fretted bass since 1965. After seeing this video, I finally made the plunge. I got a new Fender Squier Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz Bass at Skips Music in Elk Grove, Calif. I love it but I am still in "new learner" mode!
What brand and type strings are you using on your bass?
Also, did you modify your bass (pickups, onboard preamp, etc)?
A tribute to Jaco utilizing his style and the Beatles. A risky venture that could easily soar to the heavens or crash to the ground. You've masterfully acheived the former. Kudos. And even the quirky mannerisms and funky dance moves are right on. I started to laugh and almost cried. Beautiful work.
BRILLIANT! tha is relli gud!!!!!!!!! OMFG! nd do u no wot i cud put on the nck of my bass, coz i took the frets out of my old bass, filled it wiv wood filler, nd played it, i seems ok, but i think it needs cummet to protect the woo, do u know wot i cud use please?!? Graet playin!!!!
Laminated Necks, as well, lest we forget - however, Jaco had the same problem; In his video 'Modern Electric Bass' he says he practices on a fretted because not only is it harder, but because the strings would eat the neck up on his handmade fretless.
Awesome, i liked how you even imitated on the jaco weird strut-run-limp thing at the end from slang. And mixing it in with she's so heavy was awesome. even the loop sounded like jaco's. oh, and nice guitars and basses.
i dont know what he has but the boss rc xl20 is a very good and affordable loopstation. like $250 U.S I think...i couldnt do without mine...it's a wonderful pracitce tool as well.

Jaco used rotosound roundwounds.
He coated his fretboard with marine epoxy (petit's poly poxy)
That bass is a squier vintage modified jazz bass fretless and has an ebanol (synthetic ebony substitute) fretboard.
Hope that helps.
By the way, vid is great tribute!
