Theres no future without a past so for hip hop to continue the new generation NEED to have some knowledge of the history hence the bullshit of today, one example is that many producers dont sample now but hip hop is built on sampling from when Kool Herc & Africa Baambaata was listening to all kind of records for breakbeats,so now beats aren't as good.
@PM2126 I feel you. I dont think you should be forced into loving the legends. But I do think people should give these artists a try because you never know what might appeal to you.
I need to study for my exams, but I cant stop watching all your videos!! Keep it up. I love these discussions. I had this epiphany last year. "Why am I listening to this garbage on the radio? Its all about fucking bitches, popping bottles, fast cars, I got money and your broke ass don't" I started listening to the Roots, and my first album from them was "How I got Over" and fell in love with real music. I love these videos!!!!!
Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Jadakiss and a few others have remained relevant because they extended the olive branch to the younger artist and embraced them so in turn those younger artist worked with them and the fans got to see their style.
@PM2126 I also agree that a lot of people are afraid to be free thinkers and formulate an opinion.
People will say 2Pac, Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas ect. are the best because that's what they have been told. I'm 23 and reached back to stuff from my siblings generation as well as independent stuff. Most fans are simple minded, narrow minded, and lazy
@PM2126 But what if you listened to the pioneers and underground legends and you truly believe Jay, Biggie, Pac, Nas etc. are the best? I have listened to many hip hop artists but I personally like these artists and some others more than the acclaimed legends of the genre.
commentr after comment and i find myself amidst a fuckin warzone of opinion, which is obviously relevant for a debate. But, at the end of the day its about the person, yes youre gonna check shit out that your homies say is the shit but its what you rock and what your mindset is. 90s shit was sick as fuck because they were raw as fuck and they were not aesthetically interested in image and swagger. Todays youth arent necessarily seeking the raw, grimey lyrically heavy mcs of the past
The new generation has a short term attention span. They are chemically dumbed down by the chemicals in the food. Intelligent Hip Hop does not click with them, there simple brains can not comprehend it or just don't want to cause enlightening themselves just means nothing to them. Plus they are sheep.
As far as the metal vs. hip-hop comparison goes, I think a lot of it has to do with demographic. Metal was born from a middle-class white male dominated scene, who are more likely to keep a tight circle of friends. Hip-hop came from a low-income black male dominated scene, who are more likely to have a constantly changing large group of friends.
heres a question what do you think makes a classic album 4 me a classic album stands the test of time nas illmatic every eric b and rakim album public enemy nation of millions wu tang 36 chambers masta ace take a look around are all classics 2 name a few souljah wacka flocka and whatever other crap kids like nowadays will not stand the test of time
I would Like to say this is a thanked topic,I remember back when Nas dropped the firm joint I was 14 I was visiting my big bro in the ATL he took me to the record store I picked up the firm cd and he copped Rakim the 18th letter on tape. I remember saying "why you getting that old shit" we argued for hours about who was better between nas and rakim he played the first joint off Rakim's tape and I became a fan instantly I went and copped the cd the next day much respect to the legends ever since
Firstly I loved Feefos - simple but not wacked line. Secondly - Metal is similar, many of these nu metal - listeners - fans - players - do not understand Sabbath, Priest ect. Hip hop is no different. And thirdly it's a great thing for an artist to be ignorant (on certain levels) because he can create something truely original. He doesn't need to of passed every history test. All he needs is the feel and the will.
Myke, kinge, feefo and beezy you're videos are getting better & better. This is the best one yet. Also, sorry to say this feefo but u got owned badly LOL
@PapaliaSwag Nope. I don't think hip hop right now is in good hands. Simply because the artists you mentioned don't get enough mainstream recognition to change what the masses understand about the artform. No matter how many Krits and Lamars there are, there will be Wackas and Guccis that will outweigh them based on sales and popularity. And for that reason, the meaningful, substance-heavy stuff will always remain underground. Which is fine with me.
@PapaliaSwag I think hip hop is evolving to better music. I think that the period of the trap music is being washed away. Will the radio take hold is the question or will they continue to peddle junk.
@TheSWS3 Probably not. I think older people generally grow out of hip hop. Either through disillusion or just not having an interest in it anymore. We lose the each one teach one aspect of it.
but what im sayin is this..what do you consider current..the general style of every song that comes out now or just that the song is coming out this year and isnt from previous years. what i mean is, do you guys think that the style of music ppl drop now is whats attractive to most hip hop listeners or jus the fact that its new rap is the thing thats attractive.
@SoloDolo784 I think anything new will attract people. Look at Trap Music. It had a strong run because it was trendy and new. Eventually people bored of it.
What Mike said about Soulja boy not knowing Ice T and about other up and coming rappers doing the same thing is exactly right. Nowadays people try to model there game from wiz and mac miller. It's pathetic if you think about it.
Like Marley Marl said, "you had blues, jazz, hip-hop and now hip-pop."
I think what we are talking about is really confusion between two different genres of music. The mood isnt the same, the purpose isnt the same, the standards arent the same, the goals arent the same, the values arent the same, the quality isnt the same and the sound sure as fuck isnt the same.
the new shit is really just a different category of music so driven by imitation that it hasnt earned its own name yet.
All good points again. I know a lot of my peers will not even listen to older shit because its old. Then when I try to recommend them someone, who is even from our time like "Little Brother" they still dismiss it because its coming from ME.
souja boi doesnt give a shit about ice t or hip hop in general he only does it for money like most mainstream rappers nowadays for them it was never about the music and thats why hip hop is so fucked up compared to other genres
As a twenty year old, I think some of you are asking a little too much music nerdery out of average-assed-super-basic kids. Kids intake what they hear on the radio and they like the artists that they like, but unless they get REALLY into the shit and nerd out a little bit they aren't going to take the time to do research and listen to who layed the groundwork. I guess the next question would be does "respect" equal physically listening to an artist's music?
@TOONONEsubwoofordie I agree to a point, but I just dont see how even these average kids can hear the shit on the radio and not say "wow, this stuff sucks". Unless kids today are just pre conditioned to like garbage.
@MrCrim123 I mean the radio is such a mindless mess its just a whole other can-o-worms altogether... my point was more like if a kid likes lil' wayne* and wayne has a new mixtape out every two-three months or whatever, it takes a special sort of dedication from your average listener to go and listen to the early Cash Money catalogue or early New Orleans hip-hop.
*feel free to substitute wayne for any rapper and influence combo that suits your taste.
and em guy was coming up in tha R&B, but I've always had a thing for listening to older music idk if its tha artist in me. But I feel if your a artist trying to do a piece of art know tha history. Thats like a writer being like o I ain't gon fuck with Emily Dickerson cuz she's old, or Maya Angelou
First off I wanna say thank you to you guys for doing this topic I was praying ya'll got mad request to do it when I twitted ya'll that question. I agree with everything C-Town say cuz I've always been that way I was born in 89* and came up when Pac, Big and em was blowing up. I've also came up when Keith Sweat,BVD
I think if the older generation took the first step and atleast tried to understand why ppl like the new music instead of looking at rap from there prespective the youth would have no choice but to give respect to the pioneers
just look at some of the comments on this video the older generation is quick to sterotype the new music (@lalagrunde) im in my 20's and what i see is more older cats getting at younger cats, not the other way around.
I think that the old school is not respected by the new kids because only in hip hop you dont nessasarily have to respect the old school to become someone in rap. Now while i took soulja boy side in the beef with ice, it shows where the line was drawn between old and new.
And lets not forget, alot of the older mc's came out speaking on there disgust with the new music, its only gonna be so long before the young kids say "f this, its our time, yall hating"
I think you guys are getting mad @ teenie boppers for being teenie boppers. I know I was 6 when illmatic came out yet I checked it out in 04 05 because I was tired of the radio bs. Real fans will check out the past albums fake fans won't.
I always love to go back and check out where the music came from look Shabazz palaces album for me it was like hearing the K-The-I??? first album and then I would go back and see where he got that from and so on cause I would love to hear new and old music and my cause of this is because my mom was very diverse and we would listen to all kinds of music from rock to little jazz and maybe some electronic music so it helps to look back on the music and know where it came from.
@facetheglitch Yes thank you cause I listen to like instrumental hip hop or ambient type of music they could review Clams Casino or maybe Balam Acab new album thank you so much for bringing this up I was wondering the same thing.
@facetheglitch yes I would love to talk about a beat tape/instrumental album. It would bring something different to the show so I'm down, Im pretty the rest of the DEHH crew wouldnt mind either
I have a second example of uneducated listeners: ppl love Outkast yet when Big Boi dropped his album, there were folks talking to me like he was a new artist...
-zines. It's not that we don't respect the hip hop greats but it's not what we are used to. Like when my friends hear me listening to mobb deep they're like what the hell is that, because it sounds so old and dated they don't disrespect the artist it's just not the music they're used to.
I am a teenager and I am a hip hop fan and I do listen to old school rap, now I'm not saying I've listened to all or most of them but a decent amount like 2PAC is my favourite artist of all time hands down. But the reason why my generation don't listen to old school rap is because that's not the music we grew up on. We have grown up in a world where artists such as Lil Wayne, Drake, rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Wocka Flocka are the people we hear on the radio, we see on tv, and we read about in maga
You want me to explain this in a easy way....Teenagers I am one I know, Don't fucking like old people, Why because they think old people don't like them. how many times do you here " oh that new shit is trash I only like old hip hop" Your only looking at one side of the problem and saying hey its all them. What about the older hiphop fans that won't respect a A-1 or a Tyler the creator cause they're to new. I mean its kinda like a strike back, You hate our shit we hate yours. Its not just hip hop
(cont.) with what Ryan was saying, average hip-hop ear is easily persuaded and it's a pack mentality. Like you guys, I have convos about music all the time and the general consensus is it's not here and so they don't give a fuck. Things like "Stillmatic is my favorite Nas album, but I've never heard any of his other stuff" or "Tupac is my favorite rapper/best of all time, and Biggie is garbage" types of thinking are garner disrespect by default. Legends just happen to fall under that umbrella
yo this is for beezy cuz he's the only one who listens to jon connor...look up the song insecure suicide its been out for like a couple weeks but its a nice track...myke why dont u think this guy can spit...i think hes one of the best rappers in the game right now.
Part 3 is looking like the climax lol sounds interesting. Personally I think when it comes old school music, or the legends of the game, rap fans are very in the present and older shit just doesn't seem to matter, or just to lazy to go back in see. The musicality of the current hip-hop scene is on the lower end of the spectrum, so the ear on the average rap is easily trained. Not like hearing the dynamics of a miles davis album and wanting to go back check earlier shit. And this more in line
This is some bullshit! You don't have to stay current. The record companies promote young artists and that's it. Look at Wiz & Too Short's new shit, the pioneers are just as dope or doper than today's artist they just don't get the chance to show it. Then it filters to the fans as a young thing. Old ass Rock bands still get respect because they have labels behind them.
the old school rappers stuck to the times that were then coming back now makes them irrelevant because they havent adapted not every old school rapper is necessary irrelevant though
The problem is that young listeners wont even give the past a chance. You dont have to love it. But at least know a thing or two about it as a foundation for the music. It disgusts me that people dont like something just because its "old." I like my J Cole and K. Lamar and many others. But ill still respect the Tribe NWA Biggie and all that. I dont like every single legend but i will give them all a fair shot to appeal to me.
wale and j cole are good mainstream hip hop of the new generation. please ctown don't deny that. I'm sure you listened to what was mainstream hip-hop back then and please tell me you like these guys and support what they're doing now.
I'm 19 and I respect Hip Hop legends rather I like their music or not. I do my homework, if a hip hop album highly regarded I will purchase the album. I bought A Low End Theory, illMatic base off curiosity. I think it's important to learn the roots of Hip Hop.
You guys did a discussion on what makes a classic album and it confused the hell out of me,I thought classic meant the music would not only be enjoyable for years to come but also better or on par with releases in later years. To clear this up could you do what makes a masterpiece as opposed to a hot album or masterpiece vs. a classis, and are they the same thing please?
A request... Do people base their fav rappers on who is the most iconic and who looks the most creative in a video. I personally I think thats fine but then some will say that they are the best rapper ever. Ok they may be inspirational to individuals and might play off as a cool guy, but that dosen't make them have the best delievery, best wordplay, best flow etc...
Do you think that the days of listening to a rapper with no visuals are gone in terms of judging them on pure rapping skills?
2 examples of ppl who just it as they hear it. With Black Eyed Peas...most folk around my age 16-21 probably didn't know that they were a serious rap group before Fergie came.
Young rappers just take what they see now for their motivation being part of the NOW generation. All they'll remember as greats are the ones still respected whether they know much about them or not. 2Pac and BIG
hip hop is the only genre where people take pride in disrespecting their history. nobody wants to read or truly understand anything. when we start practicing more positive behaviors to our own musical history it will better us in society in general. its those small attitudes that make all the difference sometimes... not caring is just arrogance and ignorance wrapped up together. its an abc concept, you cant start from 'm'.
Regarding the hating vs. criticism topic, y'all could bring up the recent hate and love around Tyler The Creator's VMA win. It's crazy how many people hate this kid just cause he won an award that I personally think he deserved
I understand Feefo's point on ATCQ, he was not smart in liking pitbull yet I don't feel that invalidated his point at all. Basically I feel that hip hop listeners nowadays just don't research its history because of the "NOW" attitude about everything.
(Cont.) (Which have contracts with every major media outlet) havent even acknowledge that there now two generations but only caters to one. And what's worst is there pumping the second generation with pre processed stuff with no understanding of there history. Think about it, your always seeing a tribute to a major rock band but never hiphop... and im not talking that vh1 crap either...
Why is RUN DMC never mentioned like the BEATLES are always mentioned in ROCK N ROLL.? RUN DMC 1ST 3 and someone would say 4th albums were all classics and set trends musicly and w/ fashion.
@toneriggz Agreed. The "You're a Hater!!" buffoonery is a product of the internet. People hide behind the internet and call people out because they're not physically in front of them on a sidewalk debating music.
I'm tellin ya's....the generation and teenagers of now are a bunch of spoiled wimps and bitches who cry anytime you criticize kanye west, lil wayne, 50 cent or drake.
@toneriggz That shit irritates me to no end. I have to dismiss that guy as an idiot because calling someone a "hater" and not even having a real response is the dumbest shit ever.
Personally, I'm not into Tribe or KRS but I have heard songs by them and respect them. Its just Ive grown up in a different generation where what is normal to me has become this radio hip hop. It's like musical conditioning for every generation.
The young representer at the end said "just because it's easy to catch on to doesn't mean it's trash" I agree. But these young dudes tend to act like just because you actually have to think to catch on to lyrics that it's trash.
I disagree with hip hop being the only genre that does this. There are so many kids that think jazz and the blues are dull and boring and not good music. Its usually the people who have a really great appreciation for music that respect the older styles. A lot of the youth today just care about whats relevant now as apposed to everything that made it because they are not as passionate about music as people like us and to me theres nothing wrong with that.
@K0STGO31 ya thats because kids dont like that kind of muscic what these guys are sayin is that kids that like hiphop disrespect the old hiphop im sure kids that like new jazz and blue music like the old stuff to but thats no the case with hiphop
Man Im 18 but all i listen to is old school because pretty much everything from the 90's was raw and real. Nowadays i have to search pretty damn hard to find some raw and real shit
amazing show again...Even tho i disagree with feefo, he argues well with a lot of thought, big up for your opinions...but that pitbull thingy was straight up owned
I don't understand why you guys don't understand why Feefo doesn't like Tribe (weird sentence ^^). I mean it's not because he doesn't like Tribe that he doesn't like old school hip-hop. I personally don't like Tribe too but I LOVE Krs-One, Wu-Tang, Lords Of The Underground, Kool G etc... It's not because you doesn't like one rapper/group that you don't like Hip-hop in general.
The irony of all of this is that the younger cats are rehashing tired fashion styles from the 80s...so, 80s rap= no good...tight jeans, gumby haircuts, 80s Nikes, snapback hats = okay? haha
Nothing is more horrifying than the thought of a few years from now, the people who liked Soulja Boy are going to wax nostalgic about how great the music was during their teen years...
@toneriggz I know right. It's a damn shame. I also don't understand how the mainstream crowd follows people like Lady Gaga and Lil wayne, both of whom do sort of eccentric weird stuff, but if I do it, people call me lame, or weird, and look down on me.While wayne can wear polka dot skinny jeans and try to play the guitar, I get laughed at for wearing Vans and listening to genres other than Hip-Hop.Funny world we live in.
...have you guys ever talked about the beastie boys? you guys are talking about legends but I can't recall you guys talking/bring up the Beasite boys? do you guys hate them?
@ChrisPhelps69 U know what, I did but only because that is one of my best friends and he knows damn near everything about me so that was an easy win for Nano

*feel free to substitute wayne for any rapper and influence combo that suits your taste.

I think if the older generation took the first step and atleast tried to understand why ppl like the new music instead of looking at rap from there prespective the youth would have no choice but to give respect to the pioneers
just look at some of the comments on this video the older generation is quick to sterotype the new music (@lalagrunde) im in my 20's and what i see is more older cats getting at younger cats, not the other way around.
and R.I.P feefo for copping a pitbull album lol
BroadwayJoe88 6 months ago
I think that the old school is not respected by the new kids because only in hip hop you dont nessasarily have to respect the old school to become someone in rap. Now while i took soulja boy side in the beef with ice, it shows where the line was drawn between old and new.
And lets not forget, alot of the older mc's came out speaking on there disgust with the new music, its only gonna be so long before the young kids say "f this, its our time, yall hating"

Kids these days have been raised on corny, soft pop-rap. All this Rihanna bullshit too

-zines. It's not that we don't respect the hip hop greats but it's not what we are used to. Like when my friends hear me listening to mobb deep they're like what the hell is that, because it sounds so old and dated they don't disrespect the artist it's just not the music they're used to.
95Khalil 6 months ago
I am a teenager and I am a hip hop fan and I do listen to old school rap, now I'm not saying I've listened to all or most of them but a decent amount like 2PAC is my favourite artist of all time hands down. But the reason why my generation don't listen to old school rap is because that's not the music we grew up on. We have grown up in a world where artists such as Lil Wayne, Drake, rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Wocka Flocka are the people we hear on the radio, we see on tv, and we read about in maga
95Khalil 6 months ago

Rap music is just thought's over a beat? Yall saying a muthafukkaz got old thoughts? lol
OuttaControlTroll 6 months ago
Part 3 is looking like the climax lol sounds interesting. Personally I think when it comes old school music, or the legends of the game, rap fans are very in the present and older shit just doesn't seem to matter, or just to lazy to go back in see. The musicality of the current hip-hop scene is on the lower end of the spectrum, so the ear on the average rap is easily trained. Not like hearing the dynamics of a miles davis album and wanting to go back check earlier shit. And this more in line
SumDumGoy24 6 months ago
This is some bullshit! You don't have to stay current. The record companies promote young artists and that's it. Look at Wiz & Too Short's new shit, the pioneers are just as dope or doper than today's artist they just don't get the chance to show it. Then it filters to the fans as a young thing. Old ass Rock bands still get respect because they have labels behind them.
OuttaControlTroll 6 months ago
the old school rappers stuck to the times that were then coming back now makes them irrelevant because they havent adapted not every old school rapper is necessary irrelevant though

Lugrashio 6 months ago
The problem is that young listeners wont even give the past a chance. You dont have to love it. But at least know a thing or two about it as a foundation for the music. It disgusts me that people dont like something just because its "old." I like my J Cole and K. Lamar and many others. But ill still respect the Tribe NWA Biggie and all that. I dont like every single legend but i will give them all a fair shot to appeal to me.
BrooklynJEW7 6 months ago

Myprops18 6 months ago
You guys did a discussion on what makes a classic album and it confused the hell out of me,I thought classic meant the music would not only be enjoyable for years to come but also better or on par with releases in later years. To clear this up could you do what makes a masterpiece as opposed to a hot album or masterpiece vs. a classis, and are they the same thing please?
bandicoot2ps1 6 months ago
A request... Do people base their fav rappers on who is the most iconic and who looks the most creative in a video. I personally I think thats fine but then some will say that they are the best rapper ever. Ok they may be inspirational to individuals and might play off as a cool guy, but that dosen't make them have the best delievery, best wordplay, best flow etc...
Do you think that the days of listening to a rapper with no visuals are gone in terms of judging them on pure rapping skills?
illhil7 6 months ago 3
And kids 13 and under may not know Black Eyed Peas didn't do electro pop after they did Pop Rap
BlipMasta5 6 months ago
2 examples of ppl who just it as they hear it. With Black Eyed Peas...most folk around my age 16-21 probably didn't know that they were a serious rap group before Fergie came.
BlipMasta5 6 months ago
Young rappers just take what they see now for their motivation being part of the NOW generation. All they'll remember as greats are the ones still respected whether they know much about them or not. 2Pac and BIG
BlipMasta5 6 months ago
hip hop is the only genre where people take pride in disrespecting their history. nobody wants to read or truly understand anything. when we start practicing more positive behaviors to our own musical history it will better us in society in general. its those small attitudes that make all the difference sometimes... not caring is just arrogance and ignorance wrapped up together. its an abc concept, you cant start from 'm'.

I understand Feefo's point on ATCQ, he was not smart in liking pitbull yet I don't feel that invalidated his point at all. Basically I feel that hip hop listeners nowadays just don't research its history because of the "NOW" attitude about everything.

The young representer at the end said "just because it's easy to catch on to doesn't mean it's trash" I agree. But these young dudes tend to act like just because you actually have to think to catch on to lyrics that it's trash.
BettaWithToast 6 months ago
I disagree with hip hop being the only genre that does this. There are so many kids that think jazz and the blues are dull and boring and not good music. Its usually the people who have a really great appreciation for music that respect the older styles. A lot of the youth today just care about whats relevant now as apposed to everything that made it because they are not as passionate about music as people like us and to me theres nothing wrong with that.
K0STGO31 6 months ago

I personally don't like Tribe too but I LOVE Krs-One, Wu-Tang, Lords Of The Underground, Kool G etc... It's not because you doesn't like one rapper/group that you don't like Hip-hop in general.
But dude Feefo you got owned dog haha
Guekooooo 6 months ago
The irony of all of this is that the younger cats are rehashing tired fashion styles from the 80s...so, 80s rap= no good...tight jeans, gumby haircuts, 80s Nikes, snapback hats = okay? haha
Nothing is more horrifying than the thought of a few years from now, the people who liked Soulja Boy are going to wax nostalgic about how great the music was during their teen years...
toneriggz 6 months ago
@toneriggz I know right. It's a damn shame. I also don't understand how the mainstream crowd follows people like Lady Gaga and Lil wayne, both of whom do sort of eccentric weird stuff, but if I do it, people call me lame, or weird, and look down on me.While wayne can wear polka dot skinny jeans and try to play the guitar, I get laughed at for wearing Vans and listening to genres other than Hip-Hop.Funny world we live in.
