It is spoken as acknowledgement of receiving an instruction(like yes in english) used as a thank you & also as a way to say you understand what you were told or taught. It is used in the Japanese Karate Dojo & the Karate world. Not really used at all outside of Karate where it would be considered more of a low brow or peasant term.
