I used to play 40K when it was 2nd edition. Back then, I had 2500 pts.of Ultras, 2000 pts. of Cadians, 2000 pts. of Storm Troopers, and 2000 pts. of Tallarns with Eldar allies. As strange as the rules were back then I still prefer playing 2nd edition over 4th or 5th editions. 3rd edition was actually okay and probably a good compromise between the "old" and "new" versions of 40K.
Unfortunately, the game has completely jumped the shark and the multitude of special rules are ridiculous.
@d40commando If you have the money, go for it! It's an awesome game, and SM armies are VERY effective...Ultramarines seem to go down easy in BatReps because the people who record them tend to post their wins..not their losses. I run a "vanilla{Ultra} marine" army and I do well against every army ive played + you can convert them to different marine codices if you dont like the SM special rules/Characters...Personally, i think UM have the BEST HQ choices in 40k...with SW coming in close 2nd.
@d40commando LoL,DoW got me BACK into 40k after I quit for 10+years.The TableTop version has more armies+WAY more units+wargear for most armies(DoW1has all the Necrons available for now, still badass tho)the "Assault on Black Reach" set is definately worth the $ and a great start w/approx 500pts of Space Orcs(w/3!$35DeffKoptas!)+500pts in Space Marines (which you can use as; Ultra"Vanilla"Marines,SpaceWolves, BloodAngel,DarkAngels,DemonHunters, etc).Hope that helps a little!Cheers!
Well the new Codex has good changings but also negative ones... Terminators are still too weak for what they cost! Look at the stupid Tyranids... they get everything for a few points, much too cheap for their strenght! And the captain should be immune to instant kills again and of course WITH the 4+ Save!
After rewatching this video, I came to one conclusion. I think GW did not allow for Terminator Honors for Captains because they bumped up the WS from 5 to 6. I'd rather have one more die to roll, but I think it was their reasoning.
the biggest down fall of the librarian is no invaulve save. but some of the powers could be goo if you place him in the correct place but i agree with you librarians arnt good anymore

So is it a bad time for me to get into the hobby? I saw Battle Report's where they get defeated quickly and that gave me a headache.

Ok, been a month since a post, and you probably know this now. Relic Blade is Str 6 which will instant kill Toughness 3.

back in fourth edition a chaplian with lightning claws and terminator armor with terminators with lightning claws was the bane of necrons and chaos

Honour Guard have bolters AND bolt pistols, just so you know. They can rapid fire, then fight in close combat with pistols and power weapons.

awe generic marines can no longer buy the best junk and throw them headlong into the strongest enemy units. :c
