Australia is a Technical Defense Force, we use small mobile technical groups that are fast and hard to detect, thus no need to be returning continuous fire. I'm not saying an air strike was strictly necessary in that case, but if I was being shot at by an indeterminate number of hostiles, I can't say for sure that I wouldn't call for support. When you're in a firefight, you will do whatever it takes to come out on top, and calling an F16 in is as good a way as any to make sure Mr Taliban never fires a gun ever again.
