What kind of skills and medications do UK paramedics provide? Here in USA Doctors in the field is unheard of. Advanced paramedics in the USA can RSI. We can also preforming needle thoracostomy, central lines, Surgical cricothyrotomy and Needle cricothyrotomy in Pediatric patients. All medications we carry can be administered by our own clinical judgment without a doctors orders. Im not trying to put down UK medics, I have great respect for them. Just curious about our differences.
@everydayandrew88 UK Paramedics can issue some drugs and peform certain airway managements like intubation and OPAs. When it comes to sedatives and cardiac drugs, they can't use them without a Doctor. Compared to the rest of Europe, the UK is behind with Pre-Hospital Doctors. Alot of other countries have them as standard responding to calls. Here in the UK it isn't even funded by the NHS, instead by charities and the doctors do it voluntarily. The expeption is London's HEMS. HEMS Docs are paid.
Not correct in UK - CCPs don't have 12 months ICU fellow experience! Needle thoracostomy probably useful for only about 5 mins. RSI senior ICU/anaesthesia trained docs only. Ketamine not licensed for use in UK other than by trained doctors. Best outcomes in our system are achived through senior physician-delivered care. Appreciate it's different overseas...
@Nickopotamus Not true. There were not allowed to give ket under a PGD. The law is being changed to allow them to carry it out. Have a read of the SECAMB CCP studys.
@sky9878 Indeed - that was the problem when one trust gave them ket, then had to take it back (+midaz) when running into legal issues (and of course the rumour mill went into overdrive with "they won't trust us with ket", "there's no future in CCPs", etc)
Don't like that doc very much. A bit too cocky, everythings oneupmanship against a paramedic's scope of practice....hmmm

Doc i think you will find Advanced paramedics/CCPs can RSI, carry out needle thoracostomy and give Ketamine/Midaz.
