  • Why does every great late 80's early 90's band have to boil down into a bunch of nitwits arguing about what bands are or aren't. Im guess most of you also didn't even know what punk or hardcore was when bands like this were playing shows.

  • good band but Gray Matter capture this feeling a bit better! my opinion so don't hate

  • Guy Picciotto is a G.

  • I'm glad I found out about this band and cut my stupid scene hair Xp

    ROS changed me

  • RoS is hardcore. maybe a bit more emotional than some others. But this is not "emo". HxC 4 life

  • @MrPlmgrn Nope, speaking as a person that's been in the hardcore scene all my life, this isn't hardcore, this is emo a subgenre of hardcore.

Emo started to change it's style and became like Sunny Day Real Estate later on.

  • @MrPlmgrn why is emo a bad thing?

  • Comment removed

  • this is one of the bands that started Emo

  • @jkorbon

    Wrong.

This is THE band that started Emo.

And then shortly after the big labels grabbed it and it died.

  • everyone shut up and let guy fucking sing.

  • @jb4life77 i have alot more "brian" and personality "then" u?

learn how to spell and how to use grammar, i hear it makes you seem like less of a total retard

  • @jb4life77 nobody has a "bad taste" in music... its all personal preference.... but i can say this, bc13 sucks... theyre beats suck and they arent even good at screaming...you cant say that theses guys suck because they actually have a thing called MUSICAL TALENT.. unlike brokencyde

  • awesome listened to this a lot in 94-95

  • @jb4life77 & generic crap is what sells. look @ the top music on itunes & on most charts & look @ your channel & look @ yourself, all of them are filled w/ crap.

  • @jb4life77 i hope that one day they find a cure for your deafness so you can enjoy rites of spring. & fyi: justin bieber has no talent whatsoever & that's why his career was over when his voice dropped & now he has to sing crappy christmas music. you are so fucking stupid & i am kindly going to tell you to make the world a better place and go fall in a hole & die. i saw that you replied, read your reply and banged my head against a wall and wondered how people became so stupid. lrn how 2 spl.

  • @jb4life77 & tell people what good music is. you are probably too stupid to even know what is. Actually you're not probably too stupid, you ARE too fucking stupid to recognize good music. ohhh wait... i'm so sorry for being so harsh, i just realized you must be deaf. okay i'm just going to stop right there b/c i shouldn't be harassing you b/c of your disability. & i would like to tell you that justin bieber can't sing i know you can't tell but we can.

  • @jb4life77 i would like to start this by saying that you have to be the stupidest person i have ever encountered. you talk about having "allot more brian and personality than u" & like that example clearly shows you can't even fucking spell. i can't even read any of your comments because your fucking spelling is fucked up beyond comprehension. & secondy, you are a stupid bitch. You fucking listen to crappy as hell justin bieber & brokeNcyde and then have the nerve to come on to this video...

  • @jb4life77 too obvious, 0/10

  • @jb4life77 !.their spelling and grammar is fucking awful. 2. Brokencyde are terrible. 3. Emo is this video, not the shitty bullshit you listen to. 4. They dont have theyre own sound, theres tons of groups of idiots who do shit like that and by sound you mean shit right?

  • @jb4life77 emotional hardcore is what is described as emo 77

  • @jb4life77 Because th emo/scene kids you see today are ALL fucking posers.

  • @jb4life77 SHUT THE FUCK UP BITCH OF COURSE THIS IS TRUE EMOTIONAL HARDCORE YOUR FUCKING BROKENCYDE ISNT EVEN EMO AND TODAYS EMO IS JUST FAKE

  • lol why are you people arguing about brokencyde on this video? we all know they suck, we dont have to do anything else but laugh at that person who said they are better. thumb the retard down so no one has to see that.

  • @jb4life77 they are what started it all. true emo. so shut up bitch. & go back to jb.

  • @jb4life77 Lol, you are the most obvious troll i have seen this week

  • @jb4life77 im not even a big fan of this band, but i think you're a total idiot... or a really good troll... or just a 12 year old girl with no brain or personality who tries to be popular by acting like everybody else and doing whats "new" or "popular"

  • @jb4life77 its because 100million other people are just as stupid and have just as bad of a taste in music as you, if you look at what "sells" its always generic garbage, look at the movies and music that sells, its always shit. when you grow up you will realize how fucking terrible brokencyde is, i have shown my friends the song "freaxxx" to see if they could survive listening to the whole song... none of us could.. it was that bad.. the talentless bands you like dont write their own music btw

  • @jb4life77 brokencyde is the WORST MOST AWFUL UNBEARABLE SHIT i have ever heard in my entire life, it's an accomplishment if you can listen to one of their songs without trying to stab your eardrums out to make the terrible noise stop.

  • I'm here because I like good music, not because I care what "emo" is supposed to be defined as.

  • Lol everyone here is straight from the wikipedia page on 'emo'.

  • @kyz1409 ha howd ya know?

  • @jb4life77

says the JB fan :) you fail hunny

  • @jb4life77 i hope you're kidding. if not, kindly shut the FUCK up.

  • This is real post-hardcore shit here all that scene kid like that pass off post-hardcore these days like asking alexandria and black veil brides need to FOAD

  • Comment removed

  • damn why did my generation had to mess up emo music and make screamo

    god i feel so ashamed

  • What are some other good bands like this? Any suggestions? :D

  • Impossible to go on a Rites of Spring video without hearing these stupid emo arguments

  • everyone shut the fuck up and enjoy the music

  • more idiots using genres to define music,It's Canadian death metal yu have been lied too

  • whether they like it or not, they're emo to the bone

  • Never label a band as "emo". As @TwigDjango said, Rites Of Spring did hate being called emo.

Labeling something emo when you listen to it=labeling yourself=poser.

    End of story.

But this is an awesome song. <3

  • While this is an early example of emo, RoS never liked being called emo. They considered themselves hardcore. Just like The Cure considered themselves punk, despite forming what would become goth culture.

  • Emo is dead and Emo remains dead. Long live Bad Brains and Rites of Spring.

  • coooooooool. <3

  • hmm i wonder if they lose their voice after every concert?

  • Yeah, this sounds no different than punk, or hardcore punk. Like everyone says, ALL music is supposed to be emotional, if it isn't then you're listening to it wrong. Janis Joplin screams emotion when she puts all the passion into her music.

  • "EMO" is for lameasses that shop at hot topic and listen to mtv ....this is good music fuck all you posers you make me sick....

  • @ScienceofShadows MTV is for people who watch Jersey Shore and 16 & Pregnant, not emos. Hot Topic is for scene kids and crunksters who think they're br00t4l.

Also... Posers? What are they posing as?

You know nothing about society and music.

  • i dont care what type of music you guys are saying this is. all i know is its some damn good stuff.

  • This band is rip-off from My Chemical Romance BOOOOOOOO !!

  • @LegendaryMusicFreak either you absolutely wanna be bashed to death,or you're just another cocksucking youtubefaggot...

  • @Therealguy78666 lol.. u mad bro? I hear it's tough to talk shit in the internet.. makes ya feel big uh?

  • Comment removed

  • @LegendaryMusicFreak

Oh, dude (or gal), that sort of jokes are waaay too overused and outdated.

  • @LegendaryMusicFreak ...you jokin right? O.o

  • @TheDallyLama Listen to the first album by MCR... This is clearly a ripoff

  • @LegendaryMusicFreak you do do realize this was BEFORE mcr was ever shitted into existence

  • @TheDallyLama You don't like MCR? I think their first album was prety good...

  • @LegendaryMusicFreak right on. I've been trying to figure out why emo got so distorted. my chem got exposed because screamo is the shit and it became familiar with young people, a lot like dubstep I think. and i studied a bit of micro econ in school so I know that if there's a market for something, somebody is gonna try to make money off it. so a big company pays off a talented band like my chem to play songs that are a little toned down and the company puts it on MTV, inside Hot Topic, boom

  • @thegrandjew hmm lol, you seem to know your stuff. xD

  • @thegrandjew The glory of MCR is that they're kitsch and they know it. Not liking their music is understandable, but imo they deserve respect for being good, fun music that's deliberately over the top (and also deliberately flamboyant), much in the same vein as Queen. They're not emo, as they've explicitly stated. I doubt they understand or even care about the history of emo, as they have no connection to it, and are a pop/rock band, anyway. I wouldn't blame them for distorting...

  • @thegrandjew ...the emo label -- the blame deserves to be entirely placed on certain misinformed fans of the genre, and music journalists. So the dubstep comparison couldn't be more accurate.

  • @insteally yeah cause dubstep is garage which most people stateside weren't familiar with (present company included), as well as dub which involves, like, black people. but take the goal and origins away from the style and suddenly it ends up in suburbia. i live in colorado, which is a long fucking way from any real club, and especially far from England. but doesn't mean every poser around isn't listening to it. in fairness I like dubstep, but I also like integrity. w/e I''ll live

  • thats totally fucking badass hc-punk and i dont get why 14 year old children say they are emo and they dont even know that emo ist PUNK, you need destroyed jeans, old fucked shoes and not that titus stuff, muhaha^^

  • this is Post Hardcore - a genre that developed into emo, awesome song.

  • @aPoProductions1997 Post Hardcore is a genre that came from Hardcore this is hardcore punk

  • Damn good song, damn good band, that's it.

  • well, i'm a metalhead and have to say that THIS is good music! not the shit they call emo today

  • i love this song

  • This is pretty damn good actually.

  • Is it just me or did My Chemical Romance's first album pretty much rip off ROS's sound?

  • @Aldris247 Actually, My Chemical Romance has pretty much an original sound on all of their albums.

  • @Aldris247 nope, my chemical romance doesn't know what ROS is, my chemical romance is just a bad pomo pop band

  • this is just personable punk. at least that's what i call as to not lump it with the shitty emo bands of today

  • this is the real emo music before it mixed with lots of metal genres and others

  • Da merkt man das Emo aus Punk entstanden ist :)

    Sehr gute Band :)

  • @aiden1717 - I totally agree ! People make emo so stereotypical :/

  • @Waterbby23 : I know it's so stupid.. :/

  • I want to start a band and bring back the music that connected Punk Rock and Emo on a deeper level than just the looks and the sound of a band.

It's about listening to whatever you feel like listening to, dressing how ever you want to, and playing how ever the fuck you want to and not giving a rats ass what people thought or said about you! Who cares what you dress like or listen to. Be Yourself! In my opinion this is what Punk Rock and Emo (the early years) strived for when it all started out.

  • @aiden1717 : Excellent point! What you state is exactly the reason why I don't ascribe to any sort of scene or 'crowd' whatsoever. I love music for music's sake. When it comes to dressing, I have my own style and sense of what's cool and admittedly, I tend to stick to my roots and the time when I was first seriously influenced by music, which was the late 80s/ early 90's when wearing tight jeans was cool, but pants were pulled up waist high and not hanging off your ass!

  • @aiden1717 : I truly find all of this label specificity and exclusivity truly ridiculous. What happened to the time when bands that were less known and not necessarily given exposure by mainstream outlets just called cutting edge or 'Alternative?' Has usage of the term 'Alternative' to describe musicians or certain musical acts become like a dictional 'boogie man' of sorts? Like I said before, I listen to music for music's sake, and I always look for uniqueness and originality. Period.

  • @Lunatic4Bizcas : I agree with you actually about labeling. Yes it is truly ridiculous and uniqueness and originality are always the best policy when it comes to music.

  • @aiden1717

Sounds like you're worried about some bullshit.

  • @meinLiebsterFeind Ehh. I just miss when music was music and no one hated one another's preference if that makes any sense? Music like this should be kept alive and I for one do my best to keep it breathing and living as if it were brand new again. With all the enthusiasm, angst, and rebellion rolled into one. Bands like this, Minor Threat, and Black Flag showed me how to truly express myself through hardcore. for that I will always listen to these bands for inspiring me musically and mentally!

  • Leave it to the music industry to destroy a potentionally good subculture and music

  • These guys are from DC. and used to okay with the Bad Brains iirc.

  • emotive hardcore revival be nice

  • pretty good.....

  • This sounds like punk to me

  • @heybooger it is a form of punk lol

  • CH3M1C4L5

  • what happened with emotional harcore? how something that was so good like this could turn into whats is on the present days?

  • so emo. so sexy.

  • Stop trying to define emo you fucking faggots, it's music. Good music.

  • primo-profligation

  • this was emo before dickless corporate shills for mtv and hot topic called it emo.

  • @mwells219 thats right ;>

  • @mwells219 fuck yea it was! And I was emo before your comment was emo! retard.

  • @mwells219 corporate shils dude I give you a high five for using a quote from Bill Hicks even if you didnt know it lol

  • @TheNineinchsnails Bill Hicks was easily one of the greatest comedians ever.

  • @chevillian2 he is someone I think about everyday.

  • @chevillian2 He was one of the greatest philosophizers ever too. He never sucked satans cock.

  • Real emo.

  • 1 dislike needs to walk all the steps up the washington monument, open one of those little lookout windows and jump headfirst

  • people are dicks. fuck the world.

  • esto es el verdadero Emo viva el Emocore y no la mierda que la conocen ahora kmo Emo esto es Emo señores y señoras donde estan los verdaderos Emo ahora solo hay puros putos que se dicen llamar Emo

  • i love that.great music

  • 80s and 90s Emo. Before it died...and turned into shit by the kids you seen today.

  • @OSWNOSWNOSWN ehh some of it isnt that bad. its just different

  • @OSWNOSWNOSWN i know my uncle was in those times it all died around the 90's but my uncle got a bit of taste of it ^-^

this is the real shit right here whatever happend to emo music

  • @OSWNOSWNOSWN Emo, used to mean emotionally meaningless, now it means cutting yourself. FUCK THE WORLD!!!!

  • @666deathghost I agree with you that the media is often irresponsible, but you are certainly a bigger "problem"--if your story about "throwing bottles" in fact is true. You went to "hunt...[f]aggot emos"? Really?

There's nothing "cool" or "hardcore" or "punk" about the violence and bigotry you are espousing. ("Espousing" means "promoting" or "supporting" just in case you weren't sure.)

  • I love this. The walk away from raw Punk scene to what we now grow to love. Fuckin love it!

  • luv it

  • @SamuelHellDay Thanks man.

  • @SamuelHellDay They're both great bands. To me if it wasn't for punk they will still have this gay ass Glam Metal genre destroying metal and music in general.

  • @666deathghost

Lol your a fag. Hurting those emos? How old are you? Did you had a bad childhood? Didnt your parents love you? Did you got into fights a lot at school, so you hurt ppl with your friends because they like another music genre? Seriously, you and your friends are so frigging pathetic.

  • @MetalDarkElf LOL Suck my dick pussy.

  • @666deathghost how could he? he probably lives in a different state.

  • But right now I'm mostly into Metal but I would like to get back into the Punk world and matter or fact Metal got most of there influences off of Hardcore Punk and I like the real Hardcore punk sound. You should know what I'm talking about cause you listens to thrash metal which Basically got their big influences off of Hardcore Punk. But yeah to me during the times that Metal and Punk was being created they was two of the most underground genre to get away from the media's music of the time.

  • When when got there we blocked all three entrances so they cant leave and we just started throwing bottles at them. The fat dude called himself trying to be a hardcore deathcore kid and swung at one of my friends and he was slammed hard on the ground by two of my friends. It was so hard that his elbows was both bleeding. We was just so mad that not only they're everywhere but they also take over everything thats was good like Vampirefreaks. Well the media is a problem.

    They're fuckin crooks.

  • @SamuelHellDay You know all most all those genres you listed was infiltrated by the media and was cloned the wrong in order to make off of and now it became trends for stupid teenagers. Well I thought emo always suck even the fox five news had a short story on them which pissed us all off.My friends are mostly Metal Heads and goths and we actually got together for first time with out any problems with each other subcultures just to hunt these faggot emos down in the park. That day was crazy.

  • @SamuelHellDay Oh cool and you like emotive hardcore as well?

  • @SamuelHellDay It''s that fucking media always fucking shit up for people and they're subculture just to get money off them. Not to mention all the stupid stereo types thrown at it too. I thought that Emo just completely suck until I did actual history on the subculture and i have to say that this is not bad. BTW do you list to post punk and goth rock?

  • Yeah man, this was the first band who was labeled "emo-core," which was later labeled as just emo. At the time though, Rites of Spring and bands that sort of followed in the same footsteps hated the term emo-core, it was used by haters to define the style of music.

SHHHIIIIT I don't care though, it started a good thing...now its not so great. Without this band and Fugazi, the world would have never tasted At the Drive-in. lol

  • Stewie Griffin?

  • EMOTIVE HARDCORE ACTUALLY, LISTEN TO YOUR ELDERS YOU SNOT NOSE CHILDREN I GREW UP AT GILLMAN STREET AND THIS IS ONE OF THE 'EAVY 'ITTERS OF EMO MUSIC. NOW GET OFF THIS CONTRAPTION, PICK UP A GUITAR AND CREATE YOUR OWN GENRE HOOKERS.

  • @shayshaythewulfbaby This whole thing reminds me of the goth culture you know how. You sould just like an goth elder saying that the young generation of the goth culture are poseurs and industrial is not goth metal is not goth blah blah blah. The elders of that culture is pissed off at the youngings and the media 4 fucking the true meaning of goth. Wll is the same thing going on in this sub culture 2?

  • I heard only faggots still argue about a complete fucked over term. Seriously save your fat little fingers the trouble and just listen to the damn music!

  • Ohhh....Labels, labels, labels. Cant it just be good and left at that.

  • i dont get it, this band is definitely not emo :p whoever thinks they are is just a dumbass.

  • @xxTheEmoKid123xx

Its more Emo then this stupid Pop-Punk-Musicshit from all the Wannabeemobands D:

  • @SheepIsEpic ZThe same thing your telling the young emo kids of the genre is what the elders in the Goth subculture telling the youngings that listens to Nu Metal industrial Marilyn Manson H.I.M Evanescense and what not. Thats quite ironic don't you think.

  • @xxTheEmoKid123xx You're the dumb-ass. its emotive hardcore. This started emo. It was good music until stupid bands fucked it up like alesana, MCR, and all those pop-punk bands.

  • @DarkRaverFell13 Theres no point in comparing bands from a whole different genre. :/

  • @xxTheEmoKid123xx haha fag kiddo

  • This is by far my favorite album ever created. Sure I love a lot of music and a loto f bands, but Rites of Spring floored me like no other band and no other band has since then! Amazing raw power and emotion, if there was a creator of "Emo" Rites was it. Emo-Core!

  • The band was actually pissed about being labeled emo. They know just like any person in their right mind that they aren't. But that guys right. Fuck the labels. I don't think I'll ever get too old for Rites of Spring :]

  • fuck labels this band just fucking rules

  • i bet alot of you feel cool labeling a post-hardcore band emo and claim to have knowledge about it. thats all it is, post-hardcore/punk, don't give in to the hype.

  • @onthebrinnkk Trust me the new Generation of Goth don't even know they're roots of Post Punk thanks to that fucking Media.

  • i've had this on vinyl since it came out. some of the best brash stuff ever

  • Wow, these songs are burning

I'm only familiar with Guy's Fugazi material. I have to say he's really on form here.

And the genre politics are wack. Find some real politics. Get involved. Artists based out of punk do different things at different times in their lives. The question is - what are you going to contribute?

  • This is awesome. Kids these days think that "emo" is black jeans, a flashy haircut, and eyeliner...... these guys were the kings.

  • i dont understand why people give so much credit to a band that sounded Sounded like a sped up pop punk version of fugazi I mean come on emo music WTF who gives a shit anymore any band past the year 2000 that still claims to be an emo band sucks plain and simple. Bands like the promise ring and mineral are long gone and the only things we have left of them are maritime and the Gloria record both that of witch have shunned the genre

  • Nah, Rites of Spring was formed 2 years before Fugazi and the band never claimed to be the first emo band. The term emo wasn't even invented until years after the band ended. Geez, man, geez.

  • its just emo stop adding shit to it fukin genre freaks

  • I love rites of spring video comments.

  • this is punk rock! you emo assholes need to get a clue!

  • This was emocore. You also need a clue.

  • here is a clue= all music is somewhat emotional, otherwise it wouldn't move you in any way therefor no one would listen you twat!

  • Emo is short for "emotive hardcore". Emotive hardcore is a branch of post-hardcore, which is a branch of hardcore punk. You don't seem to know shit.

  • you are right. just dont call sunny day real estate an emo band

  • yea but a lot of bands put thier music in the genre and cling to it

  • you totally have a good point but what about fact that the band claimed to be the first official emo band?

  • well, it does seem like the usual banging about but with incredibly good poetry being shouted simultaneously

  • Old school emocore is fucking awesome!

  • Rites of Spring were a hardcore band who decided to employ thoughtful lyrics as opposed to the ever-growing jockishness of 80's hardcore bands. That is all.

  • Emotive hardcore is the shit. Fucking owns.

  • @h88m888 Fuck yourself...fucking idiot

  • @h88m888 how about calling it punk. whats called emotive hardcore now was just punk then. you youngsters and you labels jeez haha

  • @h88m888 Man, you know what you're talking about and you're not afraid to say it... Yes, Emotive Hardcore are the words. When people learn to disassociate this from modern shitcore and silly pop rock and faggots wearing tight jeans and looking like his sisters, the genre, the real deal will get the honour it deserves.

  • @Toughguysdontdance12 Ehm... Emos are not fagets just because they wear tight jeans, it depends on how they dress theirselfs, and if they are too much with make up and too much tight it is little gay & then yes Emo are never gonna be like it was, it is the fucking music industry who wanted to make money on this punk music and then MCR was labeled as Emo, just like, W.T.F??? and Panic! At The Disco. It is so fucking unemo it can be!!! They are fagets compared with this band!!

  • @MilenittaTS2 He said the shit which is a good thing I think

  • can someone send me the mp3? i cant find it anywhere. thnaks.

  • Purchase the album, leech.

  • Really like this song!

    ~The world is my fuse!~

  • luv this emocore forever modern and old skool
