HELLO? WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE MAN WHO LITERALLY STUDIED THE ENTIRE RAVEL REPERTOIRE WITH THE COMPOSER HIMSELF!!!! NO ONE ELSE BETTER TO LISTEN TO! IM TELLING YOU GENIUS.
i have a question i am 15 years old i can play this song without problems but only slow and this song needs speed. how should i practice it to get it fast ?
Admirable !
I love how much he seems to be enjoying himself while playing this piece, particularly near the beginning and when he jumps off the bench a little at 3:16. Also, love how he hammers out the melody with his left thumb starting at 1:32. Does a better job on that part here compared to his recordings.
@winnerdoozy he also played and recorded chopin, lizst, beethoven, mozart, faure, and schumann as far as i know. I really should try and up load some of my recordings of him playing mozart sonatas and concertos. his beethoven emporer concerto is worth a listen, and the eroica variations fantastic.
@winnerdoozy i will have to get my friend to do it for me i don't understand computers that much. its nice more people are starting to appreciate this great pianist
There is so much more shape in this version than I've ever heard before... in fact, so much so that the few technical errors become totally unimportant- thats the sign of an awesome performance
My piano teacher freaks out at some stuff I bring to him and I just learn it anyway and then he's amazed and is glad I did it...maybe you should at least discuss it with her? I am thinking about learning this one right now, well the suite, maybe a few movements...to work on it to have for my senior recital/bachelors degree. :)
Oh I discuss it with her and she's like "WHAT?!?!? You want to play this? Yeah no, your hands aren't ready for that yet..." I'm sitting there thinking, "Okay I've been playing for 9 years, when will my hands ever be ready?" And I would learn it, but I've got a whole pile of other stuff to learn from piano lessons, band and orchestra.... so when I have time, maybe I will learn some of the hard stuff. I want to learn Hungarian Rhapsody, but my teacher is learning it so she said no.
Oh ok. Ha ha! It's funny that you say this because I just told my teacher that I ordered the sheet music and he said, "You talk about a stretch (meaning hand stretch)! That is a BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIIIIIG piece! I tell you what, just look at it...we'll see." Lol!!!!! I understand what you mean about being ready; it does get frustrating. That's usually when I just learn it no matter what! It is hard to juggle different "reps." Sorry about the Hungarian Rhapsodies. You'll find something! :)
Yeah it's no problem... I probably would learn it in like 5 years.... lol jk... it would take me a while though. I can only reach a 9th though, and my hands aren't getting any bigger, so I KINDA understand it, but seriously, hungarian rhapsody sounds hard, but the jumps can't be too hard that I can't get them when I learn it later right? lol :)
@Classical8Finatic I know this is an old discussion, however, get the sheet music for either the Tocatta and/or the Rhapsodie and start playing . You'll be suprised how much you learn and you'll gain alot of confidence in the process. After nine years of playing you should have the technique and tenacity to do it. I was fortunate to have a sympathetic teacher who let me work on what I wanted. One day you'll discover you no longer need a teacher who holds you back.
Yeah I have just gotten the music to Rachmoninov's Prelude in G minor and it's pretty hard, but I'm learning it for college auditions. I am quite confident I could learn anything I put my mind, time and soul into, but I'll just let my teacher have her way since it's sometimes difficult for me to learn the harder level songs on my own. Thanks for the tip though! :D
Brigham Young University in Utah. the school of music there is really hard to get into, (not as hard as Juilliard, but still really hard for a university that is not completely dedicated to music) but if I start practicing everything now, I think I have a chance to get in. :D
@Classical8Finatic Hi I am 12 and I am playing this Ravel Toccata and have just finished the Rachmaninoff Prelude in Gminor . It really is a wonderful piece but for the most precise recording watch Rachmaninoff playing it. It is quite originial and different from how most people interepret it.
My friend plays this as an exerciser.
He says it's as hard as s***.

I have many interpretations of the Toccata, but Vlado's has a freshness and life that is totally refreshing, like I am hearing it for the first time.

Perlemuter practically floats through this piece! Amazing interpretation. He brought out little things I hadn't quite noticed before. :D
All the recordings I've ever heard of Toccata, there ALWAYS is a mistake, somewhere... It is cursed! xD

Perlemuter's technique was in great shape. A lot of younger players can't play with that virtuosity.

Oh yeah, is there a video somewhere of him playing the forlane from tombeau? his interpretation is so angular and interesting.

You're telling me. I have to drop the odd note from the Forlane because of that.

How good to see M. Perlemuter again, if not in the flesh, then preserved on Youtube in this very difficult piece by Ravel.
I can never understand why Perlemuter isn't better known. Bravo !
Troybeallad 2 years ago 19
Have you made his acquaintance?
JupiterIV 2 years ago
@Troybeallad He isn't better well known, quite unfortunately, because he only played Ravel.
Why Ravel isn't better known and more extensively taught is what i cant understand.
