You can not make a poor trek sound great no mater where you take it. The mastering engineer is the final port of call to polishing it ready for duplication. Unfortunately big mastering rooms like this have to put up with more and more poor quality music that has been made in bedrooms on a cheap computer connected to the internet that most people call a studio because they have some kind of production software on it. You need a lot of talent and a fkn good trek to record in the first place.

@KTKHarm until you've experienced the difference tens of grand's worth of hardware can make to a sound, you can't possibly comment on that. Plugins emulate the sound of great hardware -- great hardware sounds like nothing else.
That said, latest high end plugins really give hardware a run for its money, but you simply cannot beat the vibe and feel that actual circuitry and components gives. It's all about the imperfections of hardware - that gives "the sound" - as much as a price tag.

for mastering you will need a fresh set of ears because when you make a track and your ears hears the same song over and over it knows it and its really hard to find a error in. i must say for a dj gig i do a quik master my self but for a cd come on how do you compare your self with an for example Bob Katz? its not about dropping some izotope plugins or applying a master effect you learn from youtube.

Same studios designed only for recording very natural music from BIG singers and bands and not for such a b****t like in this video. Far be it from me to question Abbey Road, but this is kind of a weird mastering setup. ME's usually work with big full range speakers, not little mixing nearfields Those look suspiciously like NS10's.
@Direcordingstudios they look like b&w speakers ,they 're very expensive ,most studios use the ns10 ,they very nasty sounding but they are closer to the type of speakers most people have in there home.
Actually you can get Studio monitor quality by getting a 2.1 stereo set, just cheap speakers with a subwoofer. Play a song that you know what it sounds like and balance the sub till it sounds how you know it should, that setup gives you a sound almost as good as some really expensive monitors. I mix like that all the time and when I play the mix back in the studio at college it sounds almost identical, best way to do it if you can't afford monitors :)
It wasn't a joke, a subwoofer really does give you the low frequencies you get from Monitors. The last thing you want to be doing is mixing with too much bass.
@Direcordingstudios in the background at 0:48 you can spot a B&W 802 series speakers... quite sound to be delivered with those. Bower and Wilkins benefit from fact that Abbey Road use theese speakers.

If you chose to master digital or analog you still need ideal conditions to get the job done. A well designed room is a good starting point, good mid field monitors (the cheap ones run for 10,000 the pair) and a good converter for the dithering is important. Ozone and software like that do not get the job done right without those conditions. I rather let someone else touch my music as long as they know what they are doing. The outboard stuff is also awesome. Ask Deadmau5

@KrackhauSwag I make electro house so I'm in a similar boat as you. In my experience, digital music sounds natural being mastered through a digital medium. I've used waves and it's fantastic and I own ozone and it is fantastic as well. Just do some research on which is better for you before buying one or the other. I personally don't like other people touching my music and I do my mastering. The few I've sent my music to for mastering did not do as well as I hoped.
