No disrespect bud, but that really isn't a question worth asking. I am Sikh and my primary art is Kali DBMA. I found for myself Gatka was not the best fit since it took to long to actually progress from empty hand to weapons. Check out dog brothers if you want to see what I do.

Each art has it's positive and negatives. Take what is usefull and be a student for a lifetime. The journey is just as important as the destination bud.

Look at ur best gathka instructor in the world, uptej singh, he ISNT A NIHANG. he fought with a Nihang jatt khalsa, niddar singh who is the main gurdev for shastar vidya in europe. The Nihang khalsa won easily. british defeated sanatan singh sabha, by making alternate extreme singh sabha tat khalsas. (gathka chura chamar stick twirling martial arts).

Do you even know what shastar vidiya means? sikh martial arts is called GATKA NOT shastar vidiyea, that only means the knowledge of weapons and combat. The true form of gatka ( now just sword skills) inculding takedowns hand to hand combat technqies orginated by Baba Buda ji, who passed it down to Guru Hargobind singh ji, that form of gatka only exists with nihangs and a bunch of ustaads in western countries.

this is a sparing form of the art. with the real art, and war formations etc... vast armies that outnumbered the sikhs 1000 to 1 were defeated. just look at the number of sikhs in nowday india its less than 2%, yet this small group managed to rule from dehli all the way to afganistan, withstanding persian invasion and mughal persecution. even the british empire struggled to defeat them, and admit the sikhs wud have won if it weren't for the death of the maharaja 10yrs previous

i actuali feel the physical aspect of gatka is missing nowdays. this is an art that shud be mentioned in the same breath as shoalin wushu, but its not because most of the physical training is not there. yoga/gymnastics etc need to play a bigger part if true shaster vidya is to be realised.

wushu fighters have a strict diet and training program from a young age, the same needs to b applied to gatka.

I think gatka plays a smaller part in the success of the sikh empire than the Sikh and Muslim philosophies.

Having soldiers who are prepared to martyr themselves and having ones that want to return home makes a huge difference.

The Sikh empire consisted of a large portion of muslim soldiers and generals. In fact some sources say up to 80% of the empire were muslims.

Add to this that the long life of an empire requires economic/political/social harmony and good governance.

Wrong mate, the Sikh empires army was the Khalsa Army, thuis you had to be Sikh. yes the empires general population was muslim (80%) with hindus making 10% and sikhs making the remaining 10%. muslims infact were in very high positions in the mepire, despite what had gone on under the mughal rule, the sikh empire was very peaceful once the confederation was brought under 1 rule, before this the 12 sikh clans would often share an uneasy relationship. empire only began wen all the clans wer united

first of all gatka is not barred for girls or non baptised sikhs. If you studied the faith then you would now that everyone is a sikh and gursikh, but one is a member of the khalsa after he or she is baptised.
