Hi, AVH here. I'm going to start constructing my solos differently based upon the sage advice of anonymous YouTube comments. I hope my fans will forgive me for past mistakes I've made up on stage.
Alex Van Halen is one of the VERY few GREATEST Rock Drummers of ALL time! I've been playing drums all my life and I believe that Alex knows and does things that most drummers, no matter how talented, will always over look. Alex, you're one of my heros, bro!!!
@MrThatsYe No, those are drum breaks. Drum solos are supposed to have the most challenging and original pieces throughout. The idea is to impress the audience and leave them remembering you. And if you're a drummer yourself, the idea is to inspire other drummers to want to learn more. You can't do any of that with just basic stuff. You'll bore the audience and have other drummers saying, "Well I can do THAT!" Drum solos are the drummer's time to shine and make the most out of it.

Dean was a former prize fighter . Rumor has it that Frank spent the night in the hospital with several teeth knocked out ..... True story , or so I'm told .........
Alex van halen is simply brilliant listen to him in song and you will here 4 to 5 differnt things going on in his playing. Listen to his solo's and hes doing 4 to 5 differnt styles of drumming in one solo.alex vh is there with gadds Ect and above bonham.
Ok Drummer... the solo he did on the Fair warning Tour was kick ass... but mainly he just simmered and did that stupid speed up routine on the pad... zzzzzz

Alex simply does not have the chops, technique, versatility and creativity that Wekyl, Smith, Phillips, Colaiuta and Gadd have. The true test would be to have any of the aforementioned drumers fill in for Alex which they could do with ease. However, Alex could not sit in for any of them and pull it off. Bonham has earned his place.
@neechee5150 what proof do u have that alex could not fill in for those drummers but they could fit for a van halen gig? Just because this solo and his other solo's are straight foward rock/metal solos does not mean jack shit. He's playing a solo appropriate for the gig. Look at steve smith soloing for journey. Its some really straight ahead stuff, but we all know (n its well proven) he's well capable of playing more difficult stuff and could easily play in a jazz/fusion band if he wanted to.

Once Smith left Journey to put together his jazz fusion group Vital information, he has been playing jazz and jazz fusion and doing it extremely well.

Those are all top rung drummers and Alex is not in the same league as any of those drummers. Alex is a good drummer, but not one of the top drummers in the world.

Alex is a great drummer, what I think what doesn't do him any justice is that he has always tuned his drums so dead-sounding. The main snare drum he hits most of the time doesn't even have a metal snare on it. He only uses another proper snare drum during his solos when he shows how fast he can go on the snare, usually towards the end of his solos.
A friend of mine has a pair of Alex drumsticks he used during a soundcheck many years ago. You wouldn't believe the size! I've never seen such big drumstick for sale in any shop.
alex is a super drummer, he is awesome live, but listen to his playing on the records, can't get much better than him, his sound did change with the lighter music they were doing with sammy, i thought humans being was really great, super solid, but otherwise nothing with sammy impressed me, the new album sounds like it will be awesome
Man Alex, you can keep one mad groove. I miss those days too. Now you just have all of these half ass drummers like Rev and a bunch of immitators that wish they had the skill of Alex. Where did REAL music go....
alex is so goodand has only gotten better with every recording.some rock drummers just seem to never get any better they just keep the beat on record,alex has done the oposite allowing himself to breathe on every recording ............
He has a Buddy Rich feel to his technique, him and Eddie were brought in a musical surrounding with their father so it all makes sense how GREAT THE VAN HALEN BROTHERS ARE!!!!!!!
The drumming I hear in the Van Halen songs seems to be perfect for their material,long live the Van Halen bros.and guys bring back Michael Anthony-his bass playing and BG Vocals are part of the VH sound-lead singers-Roth had his day and Hagar will not come back at this point so find someone else.
@onthemoveagain Couldn't agree more, and I think the Van Halen brothers completely misjudged Michael Anthony's presence within the band,. Although Wolfgang can play the songs, he can't fill in for the cheeky stage persona and intense backing vocals that are unique to Mike.

Any man who can keep a beat while playing behind Ed is the greates drummer of all time! Don't get me wrong, EVH is god and is my fav guitar player, but sometimes he's all over the place with no sense direction. Part of the reason it sounds so good is because Al keeps the steady rocking beat. Mikey deserves credit too.
@muler321 I think you need to learn some drumming basics because it's blindingly obvious to any drummer that there is plenty of technique in this solo. And most drummers I know don't judge someone's playing by listening to one song or solo - Hot For Teacher, Pleasuredome and the live version of Amsterdam are just some examples of Alex at his best.
@muler321 You're disgrace to all drummers! Of course technique is important, since drums are the backbone of any song; time keeping and maintaining a groove are fundamental techniques, and 'single stroke rolls' are useless without them.

@5150UK just to get it straight, drums are not a backbone of any song, compositions in some generes (like country or folk, for instance) do not use drums or even any kind of percussion instruments at all. No offence, dude :-)

The guys I mentioned have energy which is conveyed through their playing into the audience, which releases their stress through reckless aggression in a community setting. The drumming I hear in the Van Halen songs seems to be perfect for their material,long live the Van Halen bros.and guys bring back Michael Anthony-his bass playing and BG Vocals are part of the VH sound-lead singers-Roth had his day and Hagar will not come back at this point so find someone else.

@onthemoveagain Couldn't agree more, and I think the Van Halen brothers completely misjudged Michael Anthony's presence within the band,. Although Wolfgang can play the songs, he can't fill in for the cheeky stage persona and intense backing vocals that are unique to Mike.

Any man who can keep a beat while playing behind Ed is the greates drummer of all time! Don't get me wrong, EVH is god and is my fav guitar player, but sometimes he's all over the place with no sense direction. Part of the reason it sounds so good is because Al keeps the steady rocking beat. Mikey deserves credit too.

@muler321 I think you need to learn some drumming basics because it's blindingly obvious to any drummer that there is plenty of technique in this solo. And most drummers I know don't judge someone's playing by listening to one song or solo - Hot For Teacher, Pleasuredome and the live version of Amsterdam are just some examples of Alex at his best.

@5150UK just to get it straight, drums are not a backbone of any song, compositions in some generes (like country or folk, for instance) do not use drums or even any kind of percussion instruments at all. No offence, dude :-)

The guys I mentioned have energy which is conveyed through their playing into the audience, which releases their stress through reckless aggression in a community setting.
