i'm a gm fan and he has a very beautiful voice, but i have to admit smokey has a very special voice and he smoked gm off the stage with this performance

All right people, why can't you all just enjoy this performance w/out having to say who's better or worse or who outsang who?  I am a G.M. fan, however, I think Smokey did a great job.. Although, this song has GM stamped all over it, they did a great job together!

I love the voice of George Michael, but I have to say that the voice of Smokey is very special too. But this song is very diffuculte to sing and Smokey with his voice couldn`not sing like George Michael, I guess no one could. Because George had in this time a very very clear voice. And I dont think that George sang louder just to drown the voice of smokey. Then the last part:"Tonight the music..." is a powerful part so had to sing it of cours louder....

As much as I like (love !) George Michael, I must say Smokey could only upstage him as his voice and singing are superior. It looks like George is trying to sing louder and louder trying to drown out Smokey's beautiful voice. Would love to see an album of duets with these two someday, but I guess their egos would get in the way :(

I like Smokey, and I know that he's a legend and all. But in my opinion, he didn't keep up with George in this performance. Really a shame because this could have been a great duet.

no, I don't think that was it.. I don't think George liked the way smokey sang the song, I remember when I saw it I also thought Smokey was just so so.. but now that I see it 20-something years later I think it was kind of cool, but really I didn'l like it back then either.

I saw the original broadcast of this event. Several days later, rumor has it that George Michael had an absolute fit backstage after this song. He thought Smokey Robinson upstaged him. If you asked me, I think Smokey was holding back. Besides, The Apollo was one of Smokey's old stomping grounds. He wasn't about to go in there to play second fiddle.
