Proper racing or WHAT all those wonderful transporters etc, love the lack of crash barriers. I lived in Penge for a time and used to walk my dog round the abondoned track, Im glad sprints are back there.
An amazing track, the reason it closed I believe was complaints of noise ??
Brilliant stuff that brings back so many memories from my youth. Like Albertosaurus I also used to climb over the fence at the park end of the circuit as a star struck kid around the same time! It's actually incredible when you look at how many of the great names of F1 used to race there and Jim Clark in a Lotus Cortina is priceless!
I watched these races as a young boy - and remember Graham Hill's name being mentioned, I think after he crashed. I would have been around 10 or 11 years old. I would make the bus journey from my home in West Norwood about 1 old penny. My mum and dad had no idea where I was, I never paid to get in, because I climbed over the fence, then made my way to the track and promptly sat on the railway sleepers that formed the crash barrier, my legs overhung the race circuit.
What a fantastic unexpected gem! I was there at the other side of the circuit - North Tower Corner. Only one slight quibble - the year is actually 1971 with Emerson Fittipaldi winning, its him on the truck on the lap of honour at the end
