The car's being built as we speak. Much testing done and the desert (in South Africa) being cleared for the first summer runs next year. Interestingly it's only cost about £4 million so far due to generous donations (3 free EJ220 gas turbines from Rolls Royce for example). Met the pilot (Wing Commander Green) last week and he said, yes, he would be wearing a helmet... I kid you not!!:-)

This video is old. They've since updated the design and swapped the positions of the jet engine and rocket engine. In this video the rocket is on top, now it's on the bottom. There's a reason for it but I forgot what it was.

They'll be milled from Titanium Alloy billets. A big problem is the car runs best on Alkali Playa. Salt Flats are too hard. Shame really since they might have run it on the huge salt flat in Bolivia. Which has the advantage of high altitude (12,000 feet) and a possible 30 mile track. Most likely site is in South Africa. Which will have to be painstakingly graded. Black Rock Desert has been wrecked by tourists.

this is true - at some points the airflow would be quicker/slower or at different pressures - both of which would affect the speed of sound locally.

Another thing - if the car is going mach 1 then the top of the wheel rims are going at mach 2 relative to the stationary observer ;-)

It is a big deal. making a CAR travel faster than even a slow bullet is a massive engineering challenge. remember that there aren't many aeroplanes than can reach mach 1.3 and they don't have to contend with surface friction.

Not any more, no. Concorde was the only supersonic civil aircraft ever made. It went considerably faster than a whole bunch of military aircraft when it was flying, but now civil aviation is all about volume - not speed. I don't think we'll see another really fast civil aircraft in service for some time.
