Lyrically alot of artists are better than Jay Z, but it takes more than that to be a great artist. I just personally like the MUSIC on reasonable doubt(only that album really). I listen to Mos Def, and Monch, Kweli, Rakim, NaS, etc. But reasonable doubt is still a regular album I listen to, same wit illmatic, alot of Big L, Black On Both Sides, etc. id listen to Jay Z over Cannabis or IT, mainly coz their beats and flow rnt appealing to me, minus the fact they r more lyrical.

When it comes down to it all rappers are in the right place at the right time when they get fame.... jay was put into the big and pac situation and took full advantage of it with one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever reasonable doubt... and if you dont like the album or jay you really have to respect MOST or at least some of his work...

ive steadily listened to rap since about '93, '94... what i have noticed about jay though is that after vol. 2 came out with the annie joint, he just kind of elevated himself off the map... everyone was looking for a savior after biggie and pac and he was the obvious choice with so much publicity surrounding him... im pretty sure it was all around the 96/97 time frame... and since then he just ran with it and now we want to compare every other rapper to him...

As I just posted on another Mos thread....Mos Def's rhyming and storytelling abilities are infinitely better than Wayne's. I'm not a Wayne hater, but he's more of a freestyle punchline rapper than a full-fledged, well-rounded EMCEE. That's just the facts. Now, Mos Def vs Jay? That'd be something I'd pay to see. As far as pure talent goes, I'd say they are equals. The only slight edge Jay has over Mos is variety of flow.

Lyrically alot of artists are better than Jay Z, but it takes more than that to be a great artist. I just personally like the MUSIC on reasonable doubt(only that album really). I listen to Mos Def, and Monch, Kweli, Rakim, NaS, etc. But reasonable doubt is still a regular album I listen to, same wit illmatic, alot of Big L, Black On Both Sides, etc. id listen to Jay Z over Cannabis or IT, mainly coz their beats and flow rnt appealing to me, minus the fact they r more lyrical.

When it comes down to it all rappers are in the right place at the right time when they get fame.... jay was put into the big and pac situation and took full advantage of it with one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever reasonable doubt... and if you dont like the album or jay you really have to respect MOST or at least some of his work...

ive steadily listened to rap since about '93, '94... what i have noticed about jay though is that after vol. 2 came out with the annie joint, he just kind of elevated himself off the map... everyone was looking for a savior after biggie and pac and he was the obvious choice with so much publicity surrounding him... im pretty sure it was all around the 96/97 time frame... and since then he just ran with it and now we want to compare every other rapper to him...

As I just posted on another Mos thread....Mos Def's rhyming and storytelling abilities are infinitely better than Wayne's. I'm not a Wayne hater, but he's more of a freestyle punchline rapper than a full-fledged, well-rounded EMCEE. That's just the facts. Now, Mos Def vs Jay? That'd be something I'd pay to see. As far as pure talent goes, I'd say they are equals. The only slight edge Jay has over Mos is variety of flow.

But a lot of out of the spotlight rappers get on the the radio and spit freestyles.
For Exp. look up "Eyedea & Slug Wake Up Show".
You can find a lot of those recorded radio freestyles if you look for them.

LOL Jay is a very very good artist and lyricist.. he knows the game.. thus he is a very good commercial artist.. However Jay is about punch lines and shit like that... mos def is on a more sophisticated level... he looks weak but mos def's brain can access some very complicated rhymes in a short amount of time, i have seen people including Kanye destroyed by Mos def.. trust me Jay won't win against mos def..

i don't think it's a matter of being deep it's a matter of being dope on the mic. if your a fan of someone thats all nice and all but skill is skill and sales don't mean anyone is more skillful than anyone else. just means that there are a bunch of people that like that style. sort of how there are tons of people that like soulja boy. mos isn't even my favorite rapper but when it comes to lyrics mos can son plenty of these "rappers".

listen, MOS WASN'T DRINKIN THAT NIGHT, HE WASN'T HIGH EITHER. he's been talking about this battle for sometime way before i even recorded this, but i never have my camera out when he talks about it and he usually names a the teams that he wants to have involved to go up against each other. this time i went to my ride to record it but because other people were around we couldnt remember the teams he usually names.. i could only remember jay and wayne at the time. off camera he goes harder on them
