  • as for this finishing their career they released at least 2 albums post this that made top ten in the album chart, hardly a failure for an indie band. Saw them a few times as a teenager and they always came across as good lad. Schofield meh....Andy Crane ran a better broom cupboard anyway.

  • @jurassicmarc gordan the gofer upstaged schofield anyway lol

  • nice outfit phill!

  • Ugly, stupid, untalented, unoriginal, tasteless fucking scumbags. Schofield is just a kids tv presenter & always will be, but he's got more talent in his left eye ball than those two pathetic looking cunts who took the stage.

  • I was there!!! What a shot!

  • Phillip Schofield is a useless cunt.

  • Some one needs to do the same to Richard Bacon today - the most irritating dickhead around!!!

  • usm are a shit band and they couldnt handle the truth that came from philip. I say go on philip! We were all thinking what you said and besides, he was laughing when got up

  • @mikemikemikeuk so was Les Carter (laughing)

  • Played that night at Nottingham's Rock City. This was filmed lunch time and then straight up to sound check at Nottingham. Frosty on stage after they had a fall out! Crazy gig at Rock City though. Could have finished them but helped make them. You fat wot? ;-)

  • What a disgusting band no wonder we no longer hear of them. Scum bags

  • @Hero87 erm....they have played sold out gigs every year since 2007 to almost 5000 people so yeah n wonder eh lol, best band on the planet!

  • @bl0xta LOL I didn't know. But 5000? I wouldn't call that the best band on the planet but fair doos if ppl enjoy listening to them.

  • @Hero87 What is so good about um is that they didn't give a toss if they made it or not. The fact they didn't really hit it big means they are still going today in 2011. Also Carter gigs are the best I've experienced. I would honestly prefer to go to a 5000 strong carter gig than 50000 at a stadium with anyone else cause the roof comes off both from the band and the crowd :-) I'm not knocking others just saying that Carter still shine bright today

  • ...and David Icke says ' Like to show you how...'

    The 90's were fucking epic.

  • schofield is a fucking gay pratt and wish he was dead!!!

  • awesome!

  • now not only......aaah

  • 666

  • Hah I never tire of watching this.

  • Schofield asked for it and got what he deserved. Fucking twat.

  • @kbdkbd99 carter r untalented shit, they shouldve left schofield alone, he's tens times what they r, your the fucking twat bitch

  • @EatMyWetJuicyTurd haha you bring a grin to my face.

I got 3 rate-ups for my comment while on the other hand you're an internet troll trying to piss me off - but just made me rofl instead.

  • @EatMyWetJuicyTurd i bet you sell ya arse out to the devil enough times philip is everything bad in music sumed up in one person ! thats why todays music is such shit ! pricks like himand you running things !

  • @ehead2222 im only gonna say one thing if all the black niggers were to die in this world, the world would be a safe and happy place and all the modern music would be good too :-)

  • I remember thinking it was down to them having the song faded out in such a ridiculous way...Phil's comments after that were just fuel to the fire.

  • Pip Schofield,grey haired cunt.

  • Where are Carter now? Only about to play 2 amazing sold out gigs in November! Still got it, amazing band live and a loyal fan base that proves after 20 years they can still sell out shows! Bands nowadays have such a short shelf life, I'd like to see bands from today still going in 20 yrs time.

  • @noerfc11 "2 live dates in November" - why wait so long - they're headlining one night at Beautiful days festival in August

  • @DaveSpar yeah i caught that on monday. unfortuneatley im at V festival that same weekend. Still, off to see Sultans Of Ping in 2weeks time, that'll get my juices flowing till November!

  • I still love Carter's music, but FFS it was a Smash Hits party. Pip Schofield is hardly Johnny Rotten - what was he supposed to say? They were miming, Fruitbat was pissed AND pissed off at the fact they were faded out before the agreed time. Oh dear, sorry children.

Am I still allowed to laugh at Jarvis Cocker?

  • Talking of wired hairdos Did anyone else notice the haircuts that the knights were displaying in the background?

  • Schofields a Wanker, Schofields a wanker....

  • remember this at the time, was rofl and i was just a wee kid :)))

    carter forever :))))))))))

  • Typical Schofield ....acting a smarmy tw@t....He should of smacked him around the head with his guitar...That original enough for ya Philip?

  • Carter were one of the bast bands to come out of the 80's. I have all their original 12" EP's. Must go and put Granny Farming on tonight.....

    PS deserved that slap.

  • Shit, this sounds so dated nowadays, the shitty bit of British music before Suede showed up. Carter prob made about 74p in royalties from this. Alan Klein, The Stones' manager sued them for ripping off 'Ruby Tuesday'. I thought Schofield handled that really well, he just laughed it off. At least he's still got a career...

  • @richievegas01 Twat!

  • @sblight3 The noble art of verbal abuse eh! I doff my cap at your witty reply sir, you are sharper than Oscar Wilde! Nob.

  • carter are one of the most underrated bands in history

  • @Joe143cool maybe because he is not singing for real live.

  • watch?v=46CNp89_52Y

  • Pip was one of the Carter crew, call Schofield for what he was - Tit.

  • I remember watching this I just about peed my pants laughing! funniest thing on tv at the time, Carter USM where are they now...

  • What is everyone being so gay about? Surely Carter USM just did that to be funny, like mates jumping on eachother? And Schofield was right, that was unoriginal and gay. The amps should have got up and kicked Carter over

  • @MrSpike13 - They smashed it up in protest to being forced to mime along and not sing live. If you notice fruitbat isnt even bothering to sing along to his mike during his backing bits. Notice when they start smashing stuff that the music fades out....

On top of the pops when the same thing happened to them, they spent the whole song kicking baloons around.

And fruitbat was on record as saying that chesney hawks was his mate and p'hlip slagged him off earlier in the night- which added to it

  • That was nothing like what the story has become. Schofield very mildly insulted them. The 'band' performed a completely forgettable song then looked like berks kicking over their amps. They rugby tackled Schofield and he got up laughing and unfazed.

Just my take on what I've just watched.

  • hahaha lmbo.

  • lol Carter USM being all punk rock at a Smash Hits show, then attacking Philly Scholfield. I remember this from the time. Way funny.

  • if id been there id if beaten him too.

  • Awww - he wrecked his shoulder pads. ha ha ha ha ha

  • "Schofield's a w@!nker" etc etc...

  • that knight in shinning armor made a piss poor attempt at saving schofield hahahahaha love the scream phil you twat

  • Schofield was a real cunt to slag them off. Good on them for giving him a good whatfor!

  • Awesome! This doesn't get any less funny with time.

Sheers for posting - that's brought back memories :-)

  • It's called after the watershed! Wasn't Fruitbat also pissed off that Schofield had slagged of Chesney Hawkes! He was just sticking up for a mate!

  • what is the song?

  • @hepstarr After The Watershed (Early Learning The Hard Way)

  • @funky01273 i dont know much about them but my work mate went to watch jimBob in bristol other day and he says they play brixon academy ever year

  • I remember watching this on the telly. 1991 I think it was. Takes me back.

  • Class

  • he screamed. epic lulz.

  • Anyone with the guts to shag Fern Britton is a real man.

  • I think Mr non funny twat himself deserved even more of a lamping, shame that didn't happen.

  • Fruitbat is a legend

  • one of the funniest bits of television ever. I remember being so excited that Carter were actually being shown on tv, jumping about in front of the telly singing along, then cracking up when Fruity jumped on Mr Schofield. Tremendous!

  • I like it how the guardsman in the armour trundled over.

Would have made the headlines if e had chopped his head off.

  • The biggest teenage cheer of the night, reserved for Schofield getting slippered.

  • ha ha classic

  • they should have been huge, not right for smash hits though. bad marketing. wonder what they are doing now ?

  • They are still around! They do Carter reunion gigs every now and then, check out some of the clips from this years anniversary gigs in Kentish Town and Brixton-I went to both nights and they were awesome!! Jimbob is doing solo stuff and has a book out soon, Fruitbat plays in Abdoujaparov. Hopefully they'll be back soon with more Carter gigs. :)

  • Philip Schofield was perfectly correct. That was the most awful cliche.

I believe ever Fruitbat has said as such himself in recent years.

  • schofield is a twat

the twat squealed like a girl when he went down

    rofl

  • I remember being horrified watching this at the time, when the tune was cut short. I was ranting to my parents. Then Fruitbat did that and I cheered the house down. Watching it now, after all these years, I just cheered again. *smirk* I'd forgotten this!

  • bad girl

  • Comment removed

  • yea, they cut the song short, fruitbat had been drinking all day, then schofield was a little dickhead.

  • I love it when things like that get described as an "incident" lol

  • hmm i remember this being so much more than just insults that set off FRUITBAT. They agreed to play live which it clearly wasn't and also agreed it would be the full song which was then cut short. no wonder he was pissed

  • @discreditor it actually looks like - on closer inspection - that they respond to fruitbats kicking down of the mike stand by turning the sound down - if you check it the volume comes ddown one second after the mike stand is booted into the crowd. great moment.

  • anyone remember the 'phillip schofield is a wanker' chants at usm gigs after this incident? lol

  • Have that you smug bastid!

  • Comment removed

  • fuck me philip aint you done well since fruit bat closed lined you, GMTVtard

  • not sure there was any real aggression in that, hardly "beat up" as the title says. i remember this incident, and i was a fan back in the day. phillips comments were bound to provoke some sort of response. its people like that i don't like. say something insulting with an innocent smile then wonder why the reaction.....it could have been worse

  • Schofield deserved a hell of a lot more than that.

If I were being patronised like that I would have put him in hospital.

  • I was there!!!! it was so funny!!! dont philip look young??? yes I too feel old now!!!

  • God I remember that when that went out - Oh so many years ago. I feel old, now.....

  • I'm sure it was done in humour, and Philip seemed to take it in good spirit.

  • Jokin pokin... Mock comments, tune down the tune at the end in playback pop stylee, fake beat up and NME will cover you.

But: most innovative South London band ever. I got head bruised at their concerts.

Who will be @ Brixton in Nov 09?

  • I remember this at the time (altho I missed it) and thought ye great Schofield deserves it.

Now... I think Schofield was right, look at CUSM music that was questionable at the time, badly dated now, cliche stage performance, inability to take criticism, and look at the way Philip reacted, pure professionalism, finally watching this has put CUSM way down in my estimation (well Jimbob anyway) and PS way up.

    Funny old world...

  • go back to watching Dancing On Ice. you old cunt

  • lolololol

  • I was at the Glasgow gig they did just after this appearance. They came on early for their encore, encouraged by the crowd chanting, "Philip Scholfield, you're a wanker, you're a wanker" etc. Ah, we're an erudite bunch, the Scots. They seemed to enjoy it though...

  • You need to go back to your Kylie records and STFU

  • Face down Schofield you twat!

  • Served him right...this is going straight into my favourites.

Carter USM were one of the best things to happen to British music. And I speak as a Briton.

  • I've got my tickets for the 14th - see you up front and in the aftershow party till dawn :-)

  • 2009

Carter USM to give 2 gigs in London this year on November 13, 2009, they will be on stage at the HMV Forum, London Kentish Town, while on the next day they will be on stage at O2 Academy, Brixton. Their first four albums will be performed in their entirety. First night they will be playing 1992: THE LOVE ALBUM and POST HISTORIC MONSTERS and the second night they will be playing 101 DAMNATIONS & 30 SOMETHING. rumored to be the last Carter shows for a while/ever

  • listen to his girlish shriek @ 3:28

  • Nice one, thanks for sharing, I remember seeing this on the telly - so funny!!

  • remember it like it was yeterday!

  • Wow push Schofield over on "Smash Hits" Anarchy!!! HAHAHHAHA

    Bra wearing puffs

  • I fucking loved that! The talentless cunt! Where are they playing in november?

  • everything, in the two nights they're doing all their albums, it's meant to be their last ever two shows

  • Comment removed

  • Get in there FRUITY!!!!

  • ahhhh love it!!!

cant wait to see carter again in november...both nights !!!

  • scofield deserved it...short talentless dwarf cunt

  • Been looking for this for ages. Fucking brilliant

  • Aaaah I remember the Jamie Wednesday days with the old fan club newsletters drawn up by the band themselves.

    They cared.

Lyrically poetic to the point of perfection.

    Nice guys too

  • that high pitched girlish shriek had me in stiches. Wish they had smashed the guitar over that twat's head too.

  • shame they didn't really go to town on that tit. great song

  • the reason they smashed up the set is because thier slot was cut half way through the song

  • funny that now we need someone to hit him over the head with an ice skate jim bob on skates ah dream on lol

  • he deserved that smug arrogant git, funnest thing ever to happen at smash it awards

  • just finished reading jim-bobs book, he mentions the incedent.

the squel makes me laugh every time!

  • Yeah great book, he goes quite into detail about the whole incident and the repercussions that followed (well the crowd at all of their gigs that followed chant "Phillip Schofield is a W****r!" if you call that a repercussion lol) seeing them in Novemeber cannot wait!!

  • where you going to see them?

  • Glad Fruitbat did that to Schofield who is a tw*t !! Shame that the charts are now full of muppets owned by scummers like Simon Cowell - a man ensures that no real creativity goes into the chart e.g. Alex Burke's take on Hallelujah - oh dear :-(

  • thats the girliest sound coming out of schofield....rock'n'roll history right here!!

  • Love Carter. Unfortunately attacking Schofield on BBC 1 T.V. wasn't the smartest move commercially. Being allowed on live prime time telly when you'd not even had a top 10 single would never happen these days.

  • badoom-tish!

  • smug bastard got what he deserved

    dont mess with fruit bat

    great band ,great video

    love them to death

brixton 08 best night of my life this song was perfect

  • hehe, i had this on VHS for years. fantastic. thanks for posting it!

  • OWNED!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a ponce. That little 'ah' when fruitbat done him is hilarious.

I loved the days when the TV Execs etc left themselves open when booking less anodyne acts. It wouldn't happen now. Shame.

  • Pure Genius... I still don't know why Carter were on the Smash Hits, they hardly fit the bill but Schofield got what he deserved, the smug bastard...

Jim Bob's new stuff is excellent, still way ahead of the pack, it's a shame he doesn't seem to get the acclaim he probably deserves!!!

  • Oh man, I vaguely recall watching this.

Phillip Scholfield being funny for kids tv, but being totally [and rightfully] outdone by an even more amusing response by the band!

Went to see Cater USM a couple of weeks ago in Birmingham. Outstanding.

  • That wanker deserved it. Carter showed saintly restraint.

  • Everything about this is wonderfully surreal ... no doubt every other band/group at the Smash Hits Party were singing songs along the lines of 'hey boy/girl I wanna luv you all night long' and then Jim Bob and Fruitbat come along and sing a song about child abuse (way ahead of their time).

The song gets cut short/faded out which upsets Fruitbat. Schofield dressed like a gimp makes a wussy comment and Fruitbat fails to do the nation a favour by not punching his lights out.

  • Went to see Carter the other night in Brum - FU***NG CLASS. Like it was 15 years ago. Never seen this clip before but shi*t, its funny!

  • Nice one Fruity!!

  • Go Fruitbat! :-D

    Brilliant

  • CLASS!

  • God...i remember watching this...classic.

  • First time i've seen this. Schofield took it well. thanks for posting

  • seriously i thought there was a fight how shit was that well at least the song was fucking great!

  • Thanks, been looking for that for ages.

  • love Schofields little yelp when Fruity jumps on him. Seems a little bit overhyped though, I thought Schofield took it well on the video and brushed it off but Jimbobs book makes it out to be pure anarchy

  • Thanks so much for this. Never thought I'd see the full version
