  • where is it? Hong Kong?^6^

  • i havnt seen alot of anime....but this is the best animated film i have ever seen

  • Holy crap...that was epic.

  • It's only a ciborg !

  • ROFL SHE RIPPED HER TITS OFF HOLY SHIT

  • No. I just couldn't, until recently, remember the name of the movie.

  • I enjoy girls grabbing their tits but this is going a bit to far!

  • Well, it wasn't exactly porn. :p

  • Can someone tell me if a dog is killed by a cyborg in this movie, or, if not, does anyone know what movie has such a scene? Yes, I realize this is a strang question.

  • are you with PETA by any chance?

  • the dog is fine.

    I have that movie

  • No, and no.

  • Got to find DVD

  • Ghos in the Shell 2 is more darker and hat much action sequenzes in it i like this beautiful anime

  • awesome O.O

  • Possibly one of the best films - let alone best animations - I've ever seen. Likely to be one of the best I ever see.

This is a longshot, but at the end of this sequence where the female droid's face opens up right before Batou shoots her - does anybody have a decent-quality still of that? I've been trowling through the net trying to find one but it can't be found anywhere. Its one of the most harrowing and disturbing cyberpunk images.

  • The difference between American animation and Anime is that American animation always has a clean beginning, middle and end story wise, but the animation(the actual drawing part) won't be as good. America tends to use live action for more serious films. Anime often lacks a clean story and leaves the audience confused in every way, but the animation will be phenomenal and the Japanese not afraid to animate everything. FYI, Miyazaki is the best director/animator ever!!!

  • nicely said.

  • you cant mo-cap with traditional animation.

  • what am i talking about?

  • you kind of can its called rotoscope. Disney has rotoscoped several movies. the dance scene in lilo and stitch, the dragon fight in snow white, etc.

  • Do you read a lot, because Anime tindes to be a lot like post modern works of literature. It is to make you question things. Well atleast that is what I think.

  • agreed but it only applies to anime movies, most series nowadays are just a bit too focussed on dumb otakus (naruto shippuuden etc)

they hardly make movies like you mean anymore, by example princess mononoke and gits.

    such a shame

  • agreed but it only applies to anime movies, most series nowadays are just a bit too focussed on dumb otakus (naruto shippuuden etc)

they hardly make movies like you mean anymore, by example princess mononoke and gits.

    such a shame

  • naruto has an amazing storyline if you cut out all the crap in between. most animes will have a great storyline just not very good animation. again naruto is something that appeals to the young crowd and thats why its on shonen-jump. americans tend to do the same thing and leave the seriousness for older films.

  • Damn! I'd forgotten how good the animation in this film was. Too bad the story wasn't quite up to the same level.

  • wtf was this? that girl in the end was so messed up lol. what a stripper. can someone tell me what all this anime is about?

  • Read the description. It's a sex-robot which has gone hay-wire and killed a couple people.

  • thats some exorcist-ish inspiration of the future right there...

  • one of the best films I've ever watched. Breathtaking visuals, intricate plot, mindblowing twists throughout. Awesome effort.

  • decline their request respectfully!

  • Youtube comments are truely horrid. Nice clip though

  • i love this movie! and freedom of speach!!

  • for the animation debate I will just say this: BLIZZARD makes even SQUARE ENIX look unrealistic

  • you don't speak for America, and you don't speak for the majority of America. you only speak for yourself. now get out.

  • I speak for myself and as well as anyone in america with pride and I have as much right to be here as anyone so you can't force me to do anything

  • oh jeese so what harm comes from speaking for yourself anyway? hahahaha! you make me laugh!Crimson was obviously speaking like any other japanese over american animation person or maybe you have too much pride?

P.S I'm sick of people like you

  • how can i get this movie from the web?

  • bit dark don't ya think? Oh right, we have to make a sensible comment, ok: Clearly this isn't technically anime and to all purests out there I'm sure it brings great pleasure to you to point that out. It is not Americanised and the creators are not lazy. When you make a movie better than this, then you can criticise.

  • animation? but storyline I have no Idea who can out wit this

  • WOW!

    this anime is soo cool!

  • I love this movie!

  • I'm just giving my opinion I love watching some American animations but I still am an Anime fanatic. The best really is instead of judging all these animations. Why don't you just watch it and keep your negative and one sided opinions to yourself.

  • But when it comes to Disney I think they're also a lot faster since many children now have even shorter attention spans than the children born 1 or 2 decades ago. So seeing it that way Disney would really try to create their cartoons to run faster so that their viewers don't get bored.

  • I think that Japanese Anime is more geared towards the adult viewers rather than children. Maybe not all but they have many themes in their animations that aren't meant for children. Many anime still have the same tradition and slow frame rate. As many of also their anime first did start out as Manga or Books. So its pretty sensible why their characters would act as if they're robots or don't have any body language. Though, I still do love the depth of the story.

  • thats 'cause in america we think that anime is (and) cartoons are meant for children

  • What I do mean about Japanese Anime more geared towards adults is... If you've ever watched Gundam there are lots of nudity in it. Its not showed but you can certainly get a unrated version. There are many more I've seen that do have edited nudity. Though I didn't say I was disagreeing with anyone I was just really giving out my opinion

  • we are a bit rated on our kid-adult ratings. a bit too much. i have watched dragonballz and was amazed at the nudity it also has. whats the problem? isn't everyone giving their opinion? its a free country

  • You don't speak for even most of Americans. LoL.

  • dude whats with this?

  • Crimson does not speak for most Americans.

  • crimson speaks in a sense of american animation, not americans _-_. so what are the japanesse animation likers speaking for.

  • No, crimson said "thats 'cause in america we think that anime is (and) cartoons are meant for children "

    That's not true at all.

  • hmm well i think what crimsons point is trying to say is that look around in america. do you see as many cartoons on the tv (unless childrens) as much as you see in japan. pretty much in america we don't take animation very seriously. which for the most part is true

  • Would've been a much better story had they not made it take place in 2032. We'll be nowhere even Close to this then. maybe 2100's

  • cool robot girl at the end

  • ive seen ghost in the shell and this one but i dont understand much of the vidos.

  • I dont´ care if US is one step ahead in animation, they are only fucking disney´s pictures, pure shit***

  • spot on

  • wow then look at blizzard animation

  • If you judge Japanese animation solely on Mech features, many people do, please broaden your horizons. You're denying yourself some of the best visual art the world has to offer.

  • this a better comparison. handrawn anime : handrawn american animation.

  • Quality of animation should not be judged buy computer rendered 3d images. If you have any suspicions that American animation is better then please Acquire some of the films reviewed at theanimereview dot com. If have any appreciation for animation you might reconsider your views. Someone's work should not be judged by how much it makes at the box office or DVD release.

  • it really depends on how you look at it, japanese animation has some art and work into each background clip, but it gets alittle boring. I like (as my self in person) prefer animation qualities with not just one person doing action or just having mouth movements which most anime has which is extremely irritating with NO BODY LANGUAGE!!! even the dummest american animation will have some body language and not just plain body mouth movements.

  • you're stereotyping too much.

  • the real point is that, well queston, is whethor or not japanese animation compared to american animation is better.

  • 1. did I ever cite that akira was a decade old? no. its atleast 3 decades old. made in 1984.

    2. lowering my intelligents by typing that way with "silly gramatic errors?" well I do believe that we are on a limit with posts.

I'm talking about animation groups meaning every animation. not story. A.N.I.M.A.T.I.O.N. and + in america, mostly believe that animation is for kids. look at square enix and then look at blizzard games. which is american. try thinking before you try to be a smartass.

  • At 2:16min,she looks like Kelly Osbourne! o_O

  • Watch out! Da'man is in da house.

  • yeah but the animes have far better storyline than the americans, I belive that the japanses spend more time on the storyline than any american animator would ever do. animes are not made just to watch, it's the storyline which makes the animes far better than the american. Sure the animes has some strange clips or what you may call it. But always keep in mind that animes where also originally done for the japanese public and I think that they should keep it that way.

  • i might as well read the manga then. or the book.

  • i totally agree with strawberryshort99

  • Plus I'm also sure that if more time was invested into animating Anime characters so it's kind an "Americanized" fluidity, but obviously retaining the Japanese Anime tradition of character design, the American public would welcome this genre more accepting with open arms. I think a lot of people dislike anime for their religious use of still frames. Yes, action sequences are cool, BUT during conversational pieces the animation simply suffers dramatically.

  • Lets try to impress everyone. Who wants a bigger piece of the crapcycle? Me.....!

  • Oh good God save us from Americanized anime. During still frame there is a lot that goes on besides just the mouth. Concentrate on the eyes or the expression

  • Artgeek707, I do in fact focus on the character's facial expression including body language. Anime simply suffers in both departments. Yes, facial expression are important, but body language is in fact key to quality animation.

  • Americanized anime is indeed where it's at. If all anime strive to achieve the animation quality found in american cartoons, it would be a lot easier for me to support the industry. Anytime an American cartoon is released on DVD, I usually snatch it up without hesitation because I know it will be well animated without the need to second guess.

  • The bottom line is that excellent animation (and obviously a good story line) usually translates into HIGH replay value. Plenty of anime simply lacks replay value.

  • yeah well anime is no better. like watching robots speak. no expression when speaking. atleast when in american others get expression

  • American anime lacks of 1 thing, and thats deep meeningful histories. Im not saying all jap anime is breath taking. But i havent seen the first american "anime" (more like cartoon <_<) that seriously walk away from that moronic so called "kids tv". BUT americans over compensate that with some deep breath taking movies ^^.

  • i agree. war movies are probably the best american films.. anime might have a nice storyline. full metal alchemist was totally based on feeling i thought it was emo (joking) but alot of our films can make it look like trash. again in america the animated shows are mostly for kids or for ridiculous (but hilarious) comedy. cartoons (or anything animated) = kids stuff. nice animation though

  • Some of the animation from the early 90's in america was serious. Like batman the animated series and x-men, but thats about it. The rest is looney toon quality.

  • I saw this and only saw some of the 1st 1...

  • ummm... wow... I can tell it's gona get good already.

  • When her face opened I almost started screaming xD

  • That looks insane... looks better than the first!

  • Dont worry there is still megaupload, rapidshare and ares.

Movies are not supposed to be extremely expensive as they are...

  • You must also take into consideration that it cost, if I'm not mistaken, $20 million dollars or more to make. In any business, losing money is definitely not key. The way to recuperate dollars is through ticket sales and DVDs.

At $19.99, I don't think it's really that expensive for a quality well made animation. I don't plan to buy it until it comes out with an English track. If Dreamworks does their job right and puts this out in English for $39.99 or even $49.99, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

  • you would pay 50 bucks for a movie?? I better get a blowjob with my movie for that price.

  • Depending on the movie, possibly. The $49.99 price tag is simply an exaggerated point I was trying to make. Having an english version of Ghost in the Shell: Innocence would nicely complement the newly released Solid State Society and the Original Ghost in the Shell movie.

  • I grew up on Disney-American cartoons and in terms of fluid animation, there is no comparison. From what I have seen, Anime is more about nicely drawn, detailed characters with the downside being excessive static frames or low cell count. US cartoons will trump almost anything found in Anime, again, with respect to fluid life like animated motion. Static frames should really only be found in a manga.

  • Akira was animated at 24 frames per second, and it was made in 1988, eat that Bambi!!!

  • I did like "Akira" very much. The cell count was impressive. It's a fantastic film. I have seen it once and do recall it's fluid animated sequences especially when the individuals were conversing with each other, which is always a plus in any animation.

  • Unfortunately, over 2/3 of all Anime series lack the qualities found in American animation with respect to high cell count. Watching an American cartoon enables me to focus on the story while Anime makes me impatient. Most of the time spent watching anime, my mind would question "Why won't the characters move?" "Why couldn't the artists spend more time animating the characters?" "Mmm, disappointing...."

  • I agree. even though anime goes into more in depth of the storyline with flashbacks. most anime formulas are the same. love triangles. morals. and drama. american cartoons atleast aren't too serious and have some humor too it. I'm surprised bleach isn't american which animes like that to say the least are rare.

  • I haven't had the pleasure of watching "Bleach,' so I really can't comment on this title. In what respect is "Bleach" more in tune with the American audience?

  • well yeah. it lets off with the serious topic of anime and how the usual formula goes. but its got alot of comedy that most animes lack

  • yeah but do you know how rare animes like that were? akira was made once. cinderella was made three times along with a dozen other disney princess-fairytale-films

  • I'm not sure how rare anime flicks like Akira was. It was a great film, a break through even. But with respect to the Fairy Princesses, they are geared towards girls. Most of the mainstream stuff has boys written all over it. But I think the point being is that even though it feels like there are hundreds of princess titles on the market, they are well animated projects.

  • well even though smooth things are good but through my standards i always think about how hard it is to draw over and over again for about an hour's worth of movie. I am not very patient as you say the truth about americans (me) well atleast I hope their talent is getting paid decently.

  • It's understandable that it would be a tedious process drawing similar images repetitively for a lengthy amount of time. But then I guess it's also important to ask why do American animators take pride in fluid motion. I don't believe the drawing process of Anime or American cartoons differ much. Each frame still needs to be drawn with accuracy.

  • The only major difference is that Anime artist takes SHORTCUTS (recycled images and tons of static images). I have not seen one American cartoon that has excessive static images.

  • american cartoons are very simply drawn compared to jap anime, with cartoons they dont move theres a complete still and just lips moving look at the simpsons its like looking at a picture that blinks, japanese animation has everything going on multiple people fighting with swords with moving enviroments..... what you said is basically the complete opposite........

  • Yes American cartoons are in fact simply drawn characters versus anime. But what I'm saying is in fact absolutely correct with respect to character movement. Look at the SUBTLE BODY MOVEMENTS found in American animation. When characters speak, American cartoons actually employ body movements (head, legs, arms actually move); Japanese Anime TV series are in fact bound to static frames with lip movements at best.

  • American cartoons simply employ MORE frames per second than most Anime TV series. Heavily detailed drawings do NOT constitute animation. Animation includes body movements, not only in action sequences but ESPECIALLY WHEN CHARACTERS ARE SPEAKING.

  • mr. luaghingman is making fun of you.

  • GITS2 by Oshii is like a "moving manga", and it works for the film. In contrast, the movies of Miyazaki and Takahata have characters who move with a great degree of realism and fluidity, coming quite close to the so-called "Disney standard".

  • Simply look at any two videos (and since the Simpsons are mentioned), an American and an Anime. Place them side by side, or view them one after the other. Do it both ways, watch the Simpsons first, then any TV anime series. Now evaluate movements. Also watch the anime first, then the Simpsons next. Again, evaluate movement. Many of these fluid movement that I'm referring to has a lot to do with CHARACTER CONVERSATIONAL pieces.

  • You should remember, though, that in America an animator is assigned to a specific character, whereas in Japan an animator is assigned to a specific scene. Therefore, doing detailed character animation is somewhat more difficult.

  • In the case of Oshii's films, such as this, he goes for a "manga-esque" look, whereas for the films of other directors, like Miyazaki, Takahata, Katabuchi, Rin Taro, Otomo, et al, expressive and interesting character animation is a top priority, even if the animation is mostly shot on 2s (12 drawings per second) and 3s (8 drawings per second). (For the record, most American animation is on 1s and 2s, but some animators, from Chuck Jones to Bill Plympton, have animated on the 3s or even lower).

  • The French director Sylvain Chomet once said that it's not the amount of movement that counts, but its believability. Every movement is connected with a thought of the character, and should be clear to the audience. In Don Bluth's movies, the characters seem to move too much sometimes, and certain subtle movements are lost on the viewer. That rarely happens with Ocelot, Norstein, Back, or Miyazaki.

  • Chomet has said that you can have a character who barely moves, but if he has a particular quirky type of movement that's suddenly represented, a million truths about the character appear. Animation is supposed to be a stylized, rather than a perfect depiction of real life. And, to finish this off, as my father would say, "Who the F*** cares about animation? Story comes first and foremost."

  • you sure do like to talk alot. but really that wasn't the issue. the queston was (rather opinion) which is better: handrawn anime or american animation(handrawn)

    or square enix or blizzard

yeah sure the storyline is usually going to be better found in anime but that wasn't really the point

  • I believe another major difference between Anime and American cartoons comes down to the following in terms of animation. In a typical Anime scence, you would usually see only one character move. In a typical American cartoon, usually two characters would be animated to move in a single scene.

  • i know. the storylines in anime are supperb but lets think about it animation terms. I agree so much with you. even if its some comedy as family guy or sictoms like simpsons, or even disney movies, its going to be the same, one person does the talking but atleast the ohthers aren't going to be slabs on paper. they will have expressions and emotions.

  • The major difference is the depth in story, the emotional attachment to the characters, and the believability of what you are watching. American animation is trash compared to a well build anime. to have limited movement is not a detriment.

  • most american movies are based on comedy but have you ever seen a war movie? like black hawk down, saving private ryan? or maybe good wil hunting. or october sky is said to be the best movie in the world. well based on storylines and emotion. ofourse most animation from america will be low quality in storyline but what about the REAL animation?? all anime is for the most part is slabs on paper! while one talks the other one is still. even in comedies american animation will be great.

  • Yes, I have seen saving private ryan, blackhawk down, band of brothers, platoon, good will hunting too. I havent seen a single japanese cartoon that even comes close to either akira or ghost in the shell (first one) in terms of storyline.

  • naruto. or evangelion. or elfen lied. evangelion I don't really care for much in animation or storyline which I can understand why people say its good but didn't really appeal to me. ergo proxy yes. naruto believe it or not. beneath that shonen anime is a superb storyline. but what I hate about most animes is that it follows mostly what an anime formula has..what i like more about american stories is that people act like that more so in real life. well that I've seen in america.

  • Evangelion didnt cater for storyline?! are you insane? Evangelion has one of the best storylines and study of the human mind that I have witnessed in any show, anime or non anime. I wouldnt even bother with naruto or elfen lied myself.

  • evangelion if you look deep enough in the other two is about even with elfen lied and naruto. it doesn't have to be about the human mind it can have other subjects. good storylines aren't just based on phsycological thinking (it sure does help

  • americans don't spend time in stories for cartoons because we think they are for kids

  • well the animation in japanese is trash compared to the american smoothness. americans don't focus much on cartoons unless its for kids or comedy. where our 'emotional' attachment is movies. (well not cartoons.

  • I'm definitely not saying all american cartoons are better than Anime. There are in fact some extraordinary Animes such as: (1) Origin: Spirits of the Past [i'm still waiting to buy the DVD so I can watch it] (2) Blood: The Last Vampire (3) Tree of Palme (4) Steamboy (5) Kakurenbo (6) Paranoia Agent (7) Anything from Miyazaki or Satoshi Kon (8) Tokyo Godfathers (unfortunately in Japanese Audio)

  • its all our opinion. I just like american animation much better. and the list of animes you put are kind of rare..

  • How you can even compare american animation to Japanese Manga is beyond me. American animation is childish at best. Japanese anime explores more adult themes.

  • I think you give the japanese too much credit. american animation compares (also storyline but not most of the time) just as good as or even better than japanese animation. there are superb storylines most of the time in japanese but american animation and story can make a japanese show look like garbage

  • If I want comedy, I will fall back onto american animation, If i want indepth storylines and characters that give me a sense of feeling... I wouldnt look past Japanese anime.

  • hmm. well it really depends. most movies/books which = storylines in america that are in well depth and have good feeling aren't very popular. like october sky for instince. (sp)? anyway, and also books by bill wallace. if you are REALLY desperate for good storyline in american, good luck. but you can't look in the popular section like war of the worlds(boring. or those plain action movies like die hard. mission impossible was good.was matrix originally japanese?

  • To be honest, I find that The Matrix was a copy of ghost in the shell 1 in sterms of concepts/themes.

  • The two brothers that came up with Matrix addmited that Ghost in the Shell had a huge influence on how their movie turned out.

  • Matrix is not japanese one bit.

  • really? watch from the wachowski (pardon spelling) brothers admission they were inspired by it.

  • your right, the wachowski brothers were very inspired by it. so much that when they were making the film, they had ghost in the shell playing while making the scenes.

  • american animation is for children. but to the real animation, nothing compares with american

  • why u said that?

  • Let me get this straight, Mr Strawberry, you pay attention to how many frames per-minute are in an animation apposed to the Story-Line? Give me a break.

Anime has many genres, unlike American animation:

    Comedy

    Action-super-hero-like-thingie.

Oh and by the way. If you think American animation is so superior to Japanese, how do you explain the massive success of Japanese animation world wide?

  • like the japanese, americans have many genres

    comedy

    romance

    drama

    suspense

    horror

    action/adventure

dude, americans don't focus on animation(cartoons) much. thats where the japanese and americans differ. japanese is more about anime, americans are more about realistic. your very ignorant.

  • if it were graded on an animation basis, the japanese would be schooled by americans in animation. most american animation is for kids/comedy, but nothing is better. even in akira with its smoothness, it was still disappointing. ALWAYS during a conversation in anime, one person/object will be moving and the others in the background will remain still. that is so sad. I might as well the read the book/manga instead of watching the poor anime-a-tion.

  • Akira was done in around 1989. It was by far the most impressive animated piece of art ever produced at that point. your incredibly ignorant.

  • um well actually it was quite a disapointment. yeah sure it had a great story line and smoothness, but as usual the people in the background had no moving expression to what was happening in the front most of the time. they just had still expressions. so much work with drawing a cell once every second makes me sick. I can't stand to think about the hard work. i always appreciate hand drawn anime/cartoons

  • I Think its done on purpose to be honest. It really puts the emphasis on the main characters to show how much they differ from the main public.

  • Plus, many of what's out there seem to be for boys. Even though plenty of princesses have been made, all of them are well animated. American cartoons rely on fluid motion and high cell count. Could very well be the fact that American's are rather impatient beings when it comes to watching movies but we have adopted the idea that fluid motion is important when telling a story.

  • American's cannot rely on static frames to tell a story. It's just not the American way. Overall, the fairy princess characters do move in a smooth manner which is relatively rare in Japanese anime when you look at the number of anime titles released overall.

  • I think anime frames are really more about the character's appearance instead of smoothness which annoys me like yu-gi-oh! I could care less about how their picture appearance is. most anime are for boys and have the same formula usually. but some animes are coming up

  • The "appearance and smoothness" quality you mentioned, I believe are in fact the biggest detriment to Anime. Story lines in Animes are fantastic, but visually life like motion is not as stunning as those found in American cartoons.

  • if I want a good storyline, I'll go to anime, but If I want technical stuff, you bet I'll go to american animation. people can say how much anime dominates over american cartoons but there are some things that anime will always lack compared to american animation. square enix is given alot of credit to their animation, but BLIZZARD will always make them unrealistic.

  • Let's take something other than Disney, such as Don Bluth's work. If you had two set of TV with one showing anything American and the second showing anything Anime, it just seems easier to digest with the American fluidity. For every frame an Anime uses, it seems as if five (5) frames are used in American cartoons—which is why it's difficult trying to transition from cartoons to anime.

  • Ghost in the Shell, although it definitely has its share of static frames, the overall artistry found enables the viewer (me) to actually watch the anime without feeling deprived because the characters are not in motion. The more movements the better. It does have replay value, and THIS IS WHY I WOULD PROBABLY PAY $49.99 for the movie in Region 1 English audio. A retail package valued at $39.99 is more realistic.

  • Two other anime movies that I'd pay a higher price tag is "Wonderful Days" and "Paprika" if they came in ENGLISH AUDIO. I am hoping that Region 1 United States releases would be coming soon, but who knows.. ??

  • This movie is one of the best.

  • sorry esuta as much as all of us want the full movies on youtube but it is impossible because the vids are not supposed to be distributed free.

  • Awesome stuff, I wanna see this movie

could someone upload both GitS movies?
