"Montana," released summer of '73, my wife and I were off the grid, working in Yellowstone Park, right outside Gardiner, Montana. I'd never heard the song. We bought a '55 Buick... with Montana plates, of course....
Went back to Michigan... My cousin, John, a big Zappa fan, fell over laughing when we drove up.
John, gasping for air: "Wait'll I tell... har de har har, everyone, tee hee hee, my cousin's, snark snark snort, a dental floss tycoon!"
Is it just me, or is Frank Zappa amazing! Sure he's wierd as hell, but the way he approached music from every angle and expiramented with so many styles was genius. Wish I'd been listening to all of this greatness earlier on, considering I was listening to Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan when I was six or seven.
People who listen to frank zappa hate Jesus. Frank zappa was a druggie and a pervert. Oh and he stunk really bad because he didn't cut his hair or bathes. He was a drugged out hippy who had to resort to curse words to get attention. Its sad really. All he needed was Jesus. Drugs don't solve your problems; church does
Love "Overnite Sensation" and "Apostrophe" to bits, every song a gem, just brilliant albums. Much as I like his earlier and later stuff, those two do it for me.
That guitar tone!! Almost sounds like he's using a Blue Box at the start of the solo, but I don't think so. Can't tell if he's playing a Gibson or a Hagstrom. Hagstrom pup's might be able to get that tone. Dunno.
From when I started listening: Ralph Humphrey (shown here), Ralph and Chester Thompson (later with Weather Report and then Genesis), Ansley Dunbar (Vanilla Fudge, Journey...), Terry Bozzio, Vinnie C. (cn't spell name from memory, currently w/ Jeff Beck), and lastly Chad Wackerman. All superb drummers who have participated in some fantastic and challenging music over their ongoing careers. From memory, could have missed someone.
Frank was one odd duck - he was absolutely dead-serious about the wacky, the silly, and the absurdly insane juxtapositioned against some amazingly creative music. And when he solos, just look at how into it he really is. You can't name another rock-era composer nearly as prolific in recordings and compositions. He was truly obsessed with what he did, yet never seemed to be too happy a guy. A tortured genius was Frank!
@philipatoz You can't really judge how good you are on how much you are into it, I agree with you on the other stuff, but just look at Steve Vai, he looks like he's having something rammed up his butt every time he plays, yet he sounds like s***. Zappa does lean back and forth when he's soloing which is really Scofields thing, that's pretty funny I think and they both sound like gold.
@philipatoz What's even more strange was not only Zappa not into drugs of any kind he even forbade the groupies and hangers on to have even marijuana in his house. He was a genius, guitar virtuoso and a great writer of both lyrics and music.
that girl on the xylophone is absoluley amazizing i play drums and percussion instruments but she brings it to a new level pro status... not to say frank and the band is bad. You really dont see rock music of this calibur being made today. Frank Zappa was the best rock act everrrr I wish i was old enough to see him
Ruth Underwood professional musician, known for playing xylophone, marimba, vibraphone and other percussion in Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention from 1969 to 1977 in over 10 Zappa/Mothers recordings. Examples of her virtuosity can be heard on the Rollo Interior interlude from St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast, from the Apostrophe,Roxy & Elsewhere on Inca Roads, One Size Fits All Some glimpses of Underwood in action can be seen in the Zappa movie 200 Motels & Dub Room Special DVD Fantas Sticks
That's Ruth Underwood, and your are right, there is nothing like her, and there is nothing like him. In addition, this set features Ian Underwood (on clarinet) Tom Fowler (on horn), Jean Luc Ponty on vioin, and Billy Preston on keyboards. Had Ricky Lanciotti been there for vocals, this would have been the definitive live recording.
truly the voiceof freedom when it came to what we can listen to with out the gov sicking its nose in it. saw the mothers once in the early 70s. sweet! god bless frank and his family. and she could a good tyrone.
Dental floss is commonly made out of one of two polymers (synthetic compounds), either nylon or Teflon. Nylon is defined as a fiber-forming substance of a long-chain synthetic polyamide. A polyamide is a compound characterized by more than one amide group; an amide is a chemical related to ammonia. Teflon is the trade name of the polymer polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE.
Because Frank Zappa died of prostate cancer ... and maybe it might get people to ask questions and think about maybe getting checked out themselves ... thanks

Frank Zappa was a musical genius. Totally innovative for his time, and misunderstood.
