Can't anyone get the big picture - this was not about the disaster - it's a very clever satire on the small-minded media's pickup on whether any Aussies are involved. Monty Python did this on their news for parrots sketch - "no parrots were injured in the mine collapse".
You critics probably thought the Life of Brian was taking the piss out of Jesus.
God help us if satire gets the big A - keep up the good work, lads

This piece isn't based on any specific actual earthquake; it's just a satire on the way the Australian media reports on disasters overseas, not on any real event. The choice of Turkey was more or less random (though obviously it's a country Aussies have a lot of history with). Sorry if it caused offence, certainly not our intention to make fun of actual disasters, just our dumbass media.

Don't be stupid. How could you possibly come to the conclusion that they're making fun of a disaster?
Whenever a disaster happens overseas, the Australian media immediately focuses on whether or not any Australians were killed/injured. Even if 3,000 lives are lost, the news will still focus on the one Australian who sprained their ankle.

It's a statement about the media and the disproportionate importance that is placed on people who happen to come from the same country that we do, disregarding actual lives lost. The same trend can be seen in American media with American citizens.
