This can happen when the wheel hub hasn't been drilled on properly with the rattle gun in a tyre change, and then the tyre is held on by friction pretty much. A wheel fell off of Greg Murphy's Holden at Symmons Plains last year because of that reason, got fined $5000 for it.

I was standing on a concrete road barrier for view about 20m away to the right from where it stopped when this happened.  This is the straight which came down from Adelaide Ave onto State Circuit. One of the best things I've ever witnessed. I was sure it was going to veer into one of the cars, rolled for further than this makes it seem.

It was in Canberra in 2001. I was posted at a flag point above the chicane that the tire barrier was located. I only saw a part of the incident from the location. It was so funny that I was laughing so hard.
