@ surfboard2100. Regarding scuba diving. We take the diving in this area very serious. The nearest decompression chamber is Singapore or Lhoksemule (ExxonMobil compound ) and can involve difficult and time consuming procedure to get there. Mahtab is intended mainly to provide transport to surf locations of Simeulue and Banyaks. So when a 54 year old non surfer woman guest who weighs nearly 100kilos wants to scuba dive from Mahtab w/out showing proper dive certification we take pause.
After 3 years of adventure/exploration in the wilderness of Aceh, Sumatra, it has taken its toll on Mahtab. Although in 2011 nearly 30,000$us were spent in upgrades including reinforcing/doubling up internal frames with Sumatran hardwoods, complete new teak deck, completely rebuilt starboard engine (Mahtab has 2 350hp Hino engines), a much improved anchoring system, and a new interior of teakwood paneling , Mahtab will in the future do all her docking and annual maintenance in Thailand.
Went on the Mahtab in June 2011 with 6 friends. Advise everyone not to go on it. Worst trip ever. One propeller bent, max 3 knots. 17 hrs to Banyaks. Constant lying from Carl and Scott Williams. Boat 5 days late. Back one day early. Ac not working in all areas. No power available during the day. refused to put generator on. No showers. really bad cooking. All motors for Dinghi and tender unsafe, could only go short distances and slowly. Told diver instructor on board and sea kayak on board non
Hi ya Bryan, some missing stuff on my last post. Boat was called “Mahtab” and it wasn’t BOP rights, it was treasures. I’m sure you would have met the claw once or twice, yes, inside lefts at BOP are real fun on a good swell as I too am goofy. I am very familiar with Bohemian as we been going to the banyaks pre tsunami. Very long rides then….which one are you on your clip?
@foxytaj Im going on the Mahtab this August. I have been unable to find any testimonials from people who rode with Scott. How was the boat? We're hoping to get some good waves up there! Great video and surfing.
@SLObarrels Mahtab is a good big boat. Scott is a good layed back skipper that has been navigating them waters for a long time. We had some mechanical problems that appeared to have been due to a lack of maintenance on the motors. In terms of size of boat, comfort, AC in the rooms it’s all good. Yes, I would go back again on the Mahtab no probs....sorry it took so long to get back to you.
@foxytaj Thanks for the feedback Mick! Yea Scott seems like a nice guy from talking to him in emails. Hopefully he got those motor problems sorted, and hopefully we get some swell like you guys did. When were you there? We're going to be there late Aug/Early Sept. Ive heard those islands need a lot of swell. KB
@SLObarrels Good time to go Aug/sep. In my experience there always seems to be swell at that time. There is a left around the corner when the swell is small. You guys will have a ball.
@SLObarrels When I paddled out on my mates mal for a bit of fun it was only 2 foot and crappy. Within half an hour it jacked up to what you saw. Don’t worry I got my short board soon after and believe it or not….the waves got better…
We were on "Bohemian" .. Big Aluminium Catamaran. NIce fast boat, but not much good for lounging around after a surf. The Skipper actually has built a much larger boat for this season. We were there the last week of september to second week of August.
And I am familiar with "the Claw".Got nailed by it a couple of times. All our crew left a bit of bark on the reef there. . As a goofy I actually preferred the inside left when there was a decent swell.
NIce Edit and well done with the soundtrack ...Outstanding!. Outside Right at the Bay of plenty ...right? Did you get most of the shots from the dinghy or from the boat at anchor? I found that it was really difficult to find a stable place for a tele lens. Too much bouncing around. Your footage is great. Which boat were you on?
@8523tiger thanks for the feedback. Big roomy boat with some engine problems though. That particular day I paddled out on my mate’s (burga) mal for a bit of fun. BOP rights were 2 to 3 foot at the time and within 1 hour it pulsed to a solid 6 to 8. I don’t usually ride mals but had fun that day.
The shots were taken from the dingy. There is a tie line just near “the claw” but can get a bit dangerous with the big wide sets….nearly got swamped a few times. Whene you there and on what boat?
