  • The first game leans towards survival cooperative horror (more bullet and item management), while the second leans hard towards action. Both are amazing.

  • @MrBOPESquad2 I don't know about frame rate issues, but from what I've read there are some lag issues that are just unavoidable no matter how fast net connections get. I haven't used the service myself but I'd definitely be at least willing to give it a shot if I had good internet and a bad computer.

  • @MrBOPESquad2 Are you familiar with OnLive? It's a service that lets you play PC games remotely through an OnLive computer. Since it's all basically streaming video, you don't need a very powerful PC to do it, but you do need a good net connection.

I'd definitely recommend it to someone in your position.

  • What do you think of this game compared to it's sequel?

  • I liked this game, I thought you'd touch on the overpowered melee and unbalanced versus mode (survivor friendly) though.

  • L4D and L4D2 are awesome! Especially with "The Passing" campaign and "The Sacrifice" also it's told that all the campaigns were supposed to be continuations of the end of the last one but valve didn't want players to be dissappointed to find out that they went through all of that just to end up in the same thing but just in a different place,so they changed it up making it so each campaign is different

  • Have you ever tried Killing floor? it's compared with l4d

  • Seeing as you reviewed this, could you possibly review l4d2 as a comparison?

  • All the people that say l4d2 is not worth it, see hot lesbian assassin's review for it. Then, (when it comes out) see this guy's review for it.

  • This is a good review, but it is a little incorrect. The AI Director is not random. It will place health items ammo and weapons depending on the difficulty level and how the team is doing.

  • it's funny how there are like a dozen shooters more worthy of being called doom 3 than... well... the actual doom 3 (which is at its most similar to the original during the title sequence).

  • Best game EVER is Doom 3, there is no other that can be played and played everyday enjoying every bit of them and also the easiest to mod, to enhance, making mods for enhancing them even further is also as enjoyable ! GREAT !!!

  • "contains content from ea france"??? wtf?

  • lol.. ilove your reviews... but you are the worst hunter ive ever seen

  • L4d is based in PA WTF ARE ALMOST ALL ZOMBIE BASED MEDIA SET IN PA!lol

  • They made 2nd game rather than updating the first because of the 360. It's as simple as that.

  • I played l4d2 demo as well. I hated it. It doesn't have that Source feel. It feels just like a console game, which make me very, very sad :(

  • What? I thought it felt perfect for a PC, it was a little easier on PC, but that's cause we PC gamers can handle it! ;)

  • @NabsterHax youd need to try the full game to really get emmersed in it, it feels a LOT different from the first

  • I have the full game and yes it does feel a lot different from the first. it feels like a console game.

  • I played the L4D2 demo and it was alright, but do u recommend the 1st L4d over the 2nd one? IMO I pissed that instead of updating the 1st l4d with new content seen in l4d 2, they made a new game for 45 dollars instead!

  • they can't "add on" to l4d 1 they had to make a new one. they need to update graphics, make new charecters cuz people like me are getting a little tired of the origanal charecters, and put in new content. in my opinion they needed a new game and we should be damn gratefull that it is only 45 freaking bucks! if you played the demo you would understand

  • isn't it the same thing

say they made campaign expansions for left for dead 1 each costing 10 dollars it's the same as buying left 4 dead 2, excluding all the new features that you get in additional to the campaigns

  • Beware the poison beans of Nostalgia - Doom may have been ground-breaking at the time, but Serious Sam and Painkiller do their job well. :)... Though their sequels smell somewhat.

I figured the Doom sub-genre of gaming was intended to make the player feel powerful, which isn't really the case in L4D.

  • It's not nostalgia - I still play Doom religiously.

And yeah, there are clear distinctions between Doom and L4D, but the fundamental mechanics of play are very similar.

  • I still adore and play old games too - but I've become more objective in my views of them.

I love doom 2, but a vital part of what makes it fun are the memories it evokes.

I didn't play Doom 1 until some years afterward, so I don't find it nearly as entertaining today.

Can you specify what Doom does so well that Serious Sam & Painkiller failed at?

  • @gilgamesh310 SS2.

And a vacuum exerts no force that sucks things into it. It has nothing to do with films. The pressurised air will blow out. Nothing will suck it out.

  • Nice to see EA spamming their stamps over content they had no hand in creating. Again.

  • Yeah! FUCK EA it doesn't have any shit over the PC version so they can go fuck themselves.

  • Just to let everyone know they are actually adding alot for left 4 dead 2 so it shuldnt b DLC u freaks tbh there adding

    3-4 new special zombies,

diffrent type of zombies ( mud men, fire resistant zombies and 3 more to be named)

    5 brand new maps

loads of new guns for every map

    diffrent ammo types

    the new injection

a amped AI which can change the map around on how well ur team is doing

and also a new game mode

i hope this clears out that it shuldnt be DLC

  • I've noticed that you have a quite a few reviews of Valve games. Is that because you're a fan or is that just pure coincidence? I'm a huge fan of Valve, I think that they make solid games, and I'm excited for L4D2 and the next episode of Half-Life 2. Good review!!!

  • serious sam and painkiller failed ? lol ...

  • ...to do what Doom did as well as Doom did it.

They aren't awful games by any means, but neither are they anywhere near as good as Doom.

  • i think its i little dissapointing that valve is making a sequal already and its not rly even a sequal its just the same exact gameplay the only thing new is weapons and maps and characters

  • Well, one thing is is that the AI Directors much more powerful: It can change the setup of the map, and I would imagine that alone would be too much to put as a simple update.

  • lol just rewatched this review. The whole post release support thing is hilarious in hindsight.

  • Yeah, I agree. I gave the game a 5/5 out of the box though, and I stand by it.

Additional content would have been nice, but I don't think it's necessary (though I know lots of people do).

I got more than my three hundred hours out of it and I'm happy with it.

  • Yeah, I agree with that. I've played L4D more than any other game. I got hundreds of hours out of it and I'm still playing. I'll definitely be buying L4D2. It's still very disappointing that Valve is ignoring their promises though.

  • Valve Is Gonna Make New Content For The First L4D After The Realese Of L4D2. An Interview On G4TV Is Where I Got Too Know =P

  • Meh. I don't believe that at all. They haven't done anything with L4D so far and there's no reason to believe they'll start doing anything. They're scrambling to come out with something after the backlash. It won't be anything significant though, and it won't be what they promised.

  • Hmm, I Guess You're Right. But You Never Know What Might Happen. =P

  • Yeah, bit of a letdown, and an unexpected one from valve. This game was gonna take another year for release appareently, literally just including the things that L4D2 will. Better Ragdoll/Decomposition physics, and some more scenarios. L4D always felt like a well polished mod, and I dint see why we should pay full price for another!?! But look at how well they have treated Team Fortress 2. Are they not making enough money?

  • a very good review in general, you did this game justice in almost all departments, however i think the AI deserves a bit more praise, since the AI engine used in L4D is by far the most sophisticated the source engine has seen to date, which in itself is commendable but it gels the game together very well. What is your steam id? if interested in a game some time

  • ya instead of making l4d 2 i thnk they should have been working on episode 3 see all i see in l4d 2 is new weapons maps and enemys you know what that sounds like? every expansion ever made no new gameplay elements

  • I hope Episode 3 wont be like duke nukem forever.

  • "Your experience is only as good as the players you're playing with" pretty much sums up L4D.

  • Can 2 players play in the same console with 2 bots?

(another great review mr.fatman you did it again)

  • great review

    i love L4D

  • "Left 4 Dead is as good as it gets"

hehe wait till you see Left 4 Dead 2 ;)

  • I personally believe they should have released more DLC for L4D1 before working on / announcing L4D2. That's just me, though.

  • its not just you :) i agree with you on that 1 :)

  • left 4 dead 2 will fail... its the left 4 dead 1.2 new skins and new maps thats all

  • It sure looks like it, but we cannot know untill we have played

  • You obviously dont know the new content of l4d 2, Look it up before you think its just new skins and new maps

  • i posted this a month ago... back then we just knew about some close combat weps. now we know some new bosses >__> "look before you post" right?

  • Is there any point getting a game like this for PC if you don't want to use voice chat? I am put off by the idea people will instantly boot me if I don't talk.

  • You do really nice reviews. I am going to subscribe.

    I LOVE THIS GAME!

  • left 4 dead is the best!!!!!

  • and it gets even better with survival mode !!!

    d: D

  • true that!

  • Love L4D

  • needs a level up stats and weapon level up system to suit playstyles that would be nice

  • flare gun would be cool

  • flamethrowers in co op games are not good it leads to lots of team kills

  • cool review btw u have the same accent as me, ru from yorkshire?

  • I'm from Huddersfield.

  • lol me too

  • I'd play this, but I'm seriously scared of zombies.

  • listen pal, I am seriously afraid of zombies aswell. (e.g. half-life zombies). But, these zombies aren't scary at all. Really you are missing out on a fun game. Try to get it on PC, it's better than others cause its updated by VALVE.

  • Hmmmm....not scary? Well, as soon as my birthday rolls around, I'll have to look into it. For now, though, my attention is devoted to the lush world of Aquaria, which I believe mr. Fatman here has also reviewed.

  • Lol you and me both mate!

Don't worry, we'll stick together and blast seven shades of shit out of 'em!

  • i hope i get it for my bday on 360 at april 3rd

  • not to be mean, but whats your acsent... I cant tell

  • I just played this yesterday.. man I didn't know what I was missing.

  • Good review

  • what's your steam name fatman? we should definitely kill hordes of undead bastards together.

  • Anti-Social FatMan is my Steam name.

  • another well written review that, for the most part, i agree with. i can't say that i'm always impressed with the friendly a.i., and they are a significant downgrade from humans, but they are better than many coop games such as army of two's friendly a.i.. other than that, you were spot on. keep them coming

  • good review.

but one correction: the AI Director doesn't generate content randomly it monitors your teams data like: Health,Progress,Zombie Kills,Aim,Speed and dozens of other things that are too numerous to count.

The Ai Director then creates things based on your overall skill like if your doing badly it will help out alittle by spawning gas cans or medkits or if your really good will ramp up the difficulty with more zombies.

so all and all it keeps the game intense without making it too easy.

  • Nope. I devote very little review time to visuals. In part because I think they are, generally, the least important part of a game, but also, anyone watching the video review can get a pretty clear picture of how good it looks, even with the poor YT quality.

  • someone reply: should i get this or world at war (i have xbox live)

  • is versus mode good?

  • YES, aside from ragequitters.

  • Depends on the kind of game you are interested in playing, and what you expect out of it. For example, the Call of Duty games always have strong but very linear single-player campaigns, "scripted war experiences" so to speak, and often solid versus multiplayer communities. Left 4 Dead has no single-player campaign (just a bot mode) but is great for co-op multiplayer. Great game to get if you have friends (online) to play it with, especially if you are a fan of films like 28 Days Later.

  • yeah it was a good review

  • Great review as always man, keep up the great work. I love this game, and I didn't buy it until I saw your review (even though I was excited about it, I wasn't sure how much replay value there would be in this game). I have been formulating strategies for the finale levels, which are quite hard IMO. The only one that I've got a good strat so far is Blood Harvest. If you'd like to play send me a message with your steam name.

  • The bots are good. However, they are prone to healing at the wrong time. I would say humans>bots but a bot's aim is somehow very accurate. They also have bullets that pass through you instead of hurt you.

  • >Serious Sam

    >Failed

    Yup, you're a moron.

  • whats your steam name

  • nice review! keep up the great work

  • Question:

How good is this game if you only play it with random people?

Fatman: When you say "bots > random people", you mean fun or skills?

  • Honestly? It depends on the random people. As you might expect, random people will result in a random experience. They could be terrible players that make everything more difficult and do not coordinate with the rest of the team, or they could be great players who are a joy to work with. Could go either way. However, having a solid friend or two with you can really help mitigate the trouble that a bad player can cause for the team.

  • this game is awesome when u play it co-op with a friend!

  • Also - did I hear you say 300 hours? The game is beatable in under 8 hours. You plan on beating the game. You plan on beating the game, what, 40 times?

I can feasibly see 30. Maybe. 300? No way.

It was a good review, other than that.

  • I clocked in at about 9-10 hours. (Playing for about 1 Hour [Or 1 Chapter] Everyday)

He might have made the expression 300 hours, meaning you will constantly be replaying it, and I can vouch for that, I'm at an estimated 20 something hours if you add all my playtimes up :D

  • (Sorry, not One Chapter, I meant one campaign)

And the 9-10 hours is including some failed attempts and alot of exploring

  • That's just it, there is no "beating" the game. It's a round-based game like Counter-Strike. Every aspect of the game is designed for the game to be replayed over and over and over again.

I spent 20 hours playing the demo up until the full game's release and I've spent 20 hours (so far) playing the full game, so I've already hit 40 hours - and I'm only just getting started.

I devoted an entire paragraph to explaining that point. It bothers me that people misunderstand the game's very essence.

  • how gud is this game single player?

  • Like all games, multiplayer is better, but the bots are fine. They're adept at killing and work as a unit well, but you have no direct control over them so each campaign finale is a total clisterfuck.

It's probably impossible to finish a campaign on expert with bots and it's really hard on advanced (but do-able), but pretty easy on normal. There's also no versus mode with just bots.

When I'm not playing with close friends, I play with bots rather than random people. Bots > random people!

  • ur reviews are amazing keep em coming my fav of ur reviews was ur world of goo one

  • BOTs are pretty good but multiplayer is the best

  • ur my fave review person ur awsome 5/5 !!!!!!!!!!! go antisocialfatman wooooooooo

  • your reviews are the best. Unfotunatly i'm running low on money but I'll buy it.

  • This review makes me want to get the game.

But my PC can't run it....

  • Interesting take on it - though I'm having a hard time getting into it myself. The lack of modes, the short length, and that unbearably immature XBL community.

I've beaten it once, and that was enough for me. L4D's problem isn't that I was put off by the teamwork, it's that it's SO monotonous. Sure, the AI director helps this, but there's only what, 5 guns?

Though, even after my previous experience with it, you made me want to run to the couch and try it again. That review was fantastic.

  • To me, the weapon selection suffers from the same thing that dead space did, and that is - No proper melee weapon. I'd imagine it being pretty useless I suppose, but I did expect a crowbar. Not only is it valve, but on a desk in the apartment is the zombie survival guide by max brooks, which talks about how great a crowbar is as a melee weapon. Everything else is fine though, all valve games take the "Less is More" approach.

  • Please!

We've had PS3 fanboys and 360 fanboys, now we have Yahtzee fanboys.

    Please!

Even if you're just a stupid kid: try to be smart. At least try!

And don't emulate others. Ironically, you're exactly the type of kids Yahtzee hates.

  • You forgotten Nintendo fanboys, they're the fucking worse and I'm a big fan of Nintendo.

  • I'm actually some kind of

"Windows XP running PS1 emulator" fanboy.

There's a fine line between a fan and a fanboy. But it makes all the difference

    (kindergarten philosophy).

  • Fantastic review.

  • You're genius; really enjoy this channel

  • i want starring credit!!! the end credits should read 'hotlesbianassassin as cowudder as zoey'!

great review, fatman. i wish you had recorded the times that i shot you 'accidentally' and made a montage or something. i'd have given it 6 stars if you had. but as it is, it's only 5 stars for you!

and i want to pounce on mike too!! and if that sounded gay, so be it. so be it, mike.

  • Hey! I remember you!

  • left4dead is awesome.

  • No, really seriously, how's Serious Sam and Painkiller?

  • Serious Sam is silly fun. Worth playing for sure, but nowhere near as awesome as Doom.

Painkiller is outright bad. Rendered utterly redundant by a game from 1993.

  • Yahtzee fanboys are now going to attack you for calling it a bad game, but Yahtzee was never a great critic to beging with and his jokes get tiring fast. He's only slightly better than AVGN, that's not saying much. Yes Fanboys, I hate the AVGN but I do like James Rolfe's Cinemassacre videos a whole lot better.

  • Yeah, and if it weren't for the fact that there are games very similar and infinitely better (UDoom, Doom 2, Final Doom), I might actually like Painkiller.

As it stands, it's just a very inferior version of a game from 1993. People should be getting mouselook mods and playing Doom 2 on Ultraviolence.

  • Firstly, Painkiller doesn't even come close to capturing the awesomeness of Doom. You move into a small area, which locks off, then small waves of enemies spawn in succession. In Doom, you have vast swarms coming at you from all directions.

Secondly, I do not experience jealousy. But just to put my opinion out there, Yahtzee isn't a constructive critic. He's a deconstructive critic. As he's said himself, people like him more when he's complaining. So that's what he does.

  • You think I dislike PK because Yahtzee loves it? Then let me ask you this: why do I love Sands of Time. Yahtzee loves it, too. Hmm? I'll tell you why: because Painkiller is a mediocre game. I've been saying that since 2005.

Calling me ugly is rather silly, given that you've never seen me, and calling me gay *and* a faggot is just redundant.

As for spending my life at home playing games, is that any worse than insulting people on the internet, which is what you seem to spend your days doing?

  • Wow. Your "argument" devolved pretty quickly in a very infantile insult hurling tirade. Grow up.

  • Thirdly, way to judge me without knowing anything about me. Turok is awful. Gears of War is awful. Halo is awful.

I am also praising Doom and you say Painkiller is the same as Doom. Doesn't that make your argument that I like generic shooters somewhat contradictory?

Finally, Crysis is far from generic. Unless you know a lot of games set on huge islands where you can fight (or not) your enemies in a huge number of ways, turn invisible, use tranqs, snipe from extreme range, go rambo or tons more

  • I thought you told me you liked Halo calling the games decent and not great games but great co-op games. I liked the original Halo for it's campaign and story, Halo 2 & 3 for their multi-player.

I agree that Turok blows and Crysis is far from being generic.

Also, ignore tjag808. He's just a troll around the internet.

  • tjag808,

when you have to start quoting Yahtzee (Who is a hilarious reviewer, don't get me wrong) You have already lost the fight. Seriously man, be original!

  • Another excellent review. Can't wait to pick it up!

  • Awesome review, I'm definitely going to purchase this game soo.

You mentioned games like Serious Sam and Painkiller {one of Yahtzee's favorite FPS}. How are those games by the way? I Doubt Painkiller is as good as Yahtzee'says it is.

  • arg, i want this game so badly. its killing me! why do so many good games have to be released at the same general time?

  • I think that was the best review I have seen, very well done.

  • i didnt like this game as much... this game is still fun for a while but i really expected more from valve... imo its a 6.9/10

  • There were many things that I over-looked while playing the game. I gave it a harsh review on GameSpot, and when I say 'harsh' I mean 'very harsh'. Maybe it's because I haven't played it with my friends yet, and this game focuses on the multiplayer gameplay. But it just didn't appeal to me that much. A few more weapons and a story would have been great though. Glad to see you're back reviewing, guess that means you took care of your problem. Very well delivered, as always.

  • agreed, more weapons would be cool.

  • Great Game, Great review!

  • nice review :)

  • What, Doom? What the shit are you talking about...? This is nothing like Doom, it's not meant to be in any way.

  • Yeah it is dude. It's not totally analogous, sure, but both games share the same defining principle: running around shooting a LOT of enemies. A *LOT* of enemies.

L4D has a lot more in common with Doom 1 and 2 than Doom 3 does. L4D is what I wanted Doom 3 to be, the coop aspect notwithstanding. But Doom was of course a coop shooter too, rememeber?

So, yeah, some of the structure isn't the same, but they share the most defining aspect: gunning down huge swarms of enemies. Huge swarms.

  • Sure, the core-core is the same. But I still would never call this a Doom-esq game. Sure, no puzzles, lots of enemies, shootan shootan shootan. But the rushing way of the zombies, the lackluster weaponry you have, and the fact that there are only 6 different enemies you fight over and over again. The forced Co-op elements as well, differentiates the game from Doom, a lot.

I like this review, but your voice is a bit hard to hear at times, you should try tuning up the treble and/or pitch a bit.

  • How much did valve pay you for this?

hehe, just kidding. Great game, Great review.

  • You sound Scary!
