They're not immortal, because Jacob wasn't immortal himself. They just won't die as fast as others and the MIB won't be able to kill them. That's why Jack was so sure the bomb on the sub wouldn't go off.

I think that the reason there are polar bears on the island is because they are the ones that would move the island! Come on! when ben moved it looked all cold and then he ended up in the desert. We also saw that charlotte found some bones of a polar bear in the desert too! Random theory for you!

i think that he needed to touch all his candidates to ensure they go to the island. Its possible that, in touching them, he made them candidates.
If he had already known who his candidates were (by surnames only) then this would explain why he couldn't have known who out of Sun or Jin was a candidate. He needed to touch them both.

With Richard having been 'touched' by Jacob and given a gift of seemingly eternal youth, the touching of them is definitely significant - he's choosing them - as if being 'touched by God'.
What will be interesting is why he chose these people? Did Jacob touching them get them on the plane, or was he aware the crash would happen, and chose from the best destined to fly on 815? And are both Sun and Jin candidates, or is just one of them?

If one theory is correct the touching doesnt mean anything other than symbolism for what Jacob is aiming to achieve. It says there is going to be an event on the island that will end the world and these people are the ones believed to cause this event. Jacob is aiming to manipulate these candidates so that some minute thing will alter the course of fate. I'm so excited for the finale

Good theory - it's also symbolic of who may survive until the end. Notice how they didn't show him touching anyone else on the plane E.g Boone, Michelle, the 'tailies', Charlie etc thats because they all died. They didn't show him touching Claire either even though she is still alive - possibly because she has been 'taken over'? he might be putting some kind of protection on them or marking them somehow. in the premier we saw sayid come back to life even though the pool was not working, maybe jacob was preparing for that? because it seemed like jacob wanted to die. this might the other losties are in for something and that theyll need protection from.
the other thing to mention, was that "smokey" needed a "loophole" well, after Jacob claimed Locke as one of his own "pieces" for the "game" "smokey" needed that loophole, because it was Jacob's piece.

i think locke was simply a pawn jacob used to help jack find his path, perhaps locke was made to believe he was special and suposed to be the leader, so jack would eventually realize he had to do the same, thats why john had to die, to ensure jack would return and become the leader, we have been told numerous times jack is a natural leader. i think hurley will play a big part aswell for example he saw the cabin! i think the others time is over, the losties are the new others. my theory :D

Aparantly by touching them he 'writes' out there future if you will. He touched Kate when she stole, making her a criminal and being on flight 815. Touched Sawyer so he'd continue to write his letter and shoot the guy in Australia etc. Basically so they all end up on the island and become a protection for Jacob if you will...
I also belive that its about Dark and Light(good or bad).

They were both sitting on the beach playing that checkers game that acurd alot in Lost, and John took up two pieces from the game, one dark and one light.

I did a little research on this and basically the writers took a bunch of different religious stories christian/eqyptian/greek/buddhist/hindu/muslim etc etc. and threw them all together. Sticking with that theme the sister being taken ( Claire, jack's sister) is very important to the story. Obviously a few resurections will be required. Someone has to be torn into pieces. And one brother must kill another brother or (betray) another. Jsut thought I'd throw that out there see what u guys think?
With Kate it wasn't that obvious that he had to touch all of them, but with the rest of them i knew straight away, just the way the camera was aimed at it.
Hurley was the only one touched AFTER Oceanic 815. And probably Ilana, but that doesn't matter.

I think that Aaron is Jacob. Everyone he touched were somehow connected to Aaron. Kate helped Claire giving birth. Sawyer brought him to the beach when Claire went missing. John made a cradle for Aaron. Jack is blood related to Aaron. Hurley helped Claire when they just crashed and he was like a nanny for Aaron in some episodes. Sun was there for Aaron when Claire went to seek the Staff Dharma Station. Jin gave echinoid to Claire and she could feel Aaron's first kick after crashing here.
but notice the different time frames in which he visits them. Some before their first visit (Sun & Jin, Sawyer, Kate, Jack), some after (Hurley, Said) to get them to come back then. Does this mean he intervened before for Hurley & Said the first time? If not, where they an accident? Why now are they useful? What do you guys think?
i have no idea why story wise, but mabye the creators didnt want to make this too obvious, i mean if the showed jacob visiting them all as children/ adults then it might have been even more obvious to the viewers that he touched them all.
Maybe these flashbacks did not originally happen in their lives. Maybe because they have all been to the island we see Jacob visiting them in their past (Like Faraday telling Desmond to go see his mom at Oxford). The only problem with this is that he did not visit Juliet. But maybe that is because she was already on the island when the plane crashed.

With Richard having been 'touched' by Jacob and given a gift of seemingly eternal youth, the touching of them is definitely significant - he's choosing them - as if being 'touched by God'.
What will be interesting is why he chose these people? Did Jacob touching them get them on the plane, or was he aware the crash would happen, and chose from the best destined to fly on 815? And are both Sun and Jin candidates, or is just one of them?
Got to love Lost.

@marriottduo I meant that Richard's eternal youth comes from being 'touched' by Jacob. I'm assuming for the 815 passengers to become 'Candidates', they too need to be touched by Jacob. As I said before, it's like being chosen.

Remember what he said to Jack. Something about how sometimes it needs a little push... When we buy from a vending machine, the proper course of action is us getting the thing we bought. If that course of action is interrupted, we have to push it a bit for things to return to what they should be. Jacob did just that with Jack and the others. Not that I have a clue as to what it means. I stopped watching after season 4, and I will not watch seasons 5 and 6. (though I did watch season 5 finale

If one theory is correct the touching doesnt mean anything other than symbolism for what Jacob is aiming to achieve. It says there is going to be an event on the island that will end the world and these people are the ones believed to cause this event. Jacob is aiming to manipulate these candidates so that some minute thing will alter the course of fate. I'm so excited for the finale

ok...so...this is so not complete...u guys have to give me the details...but i was thinking...remember in one episode, ben told one of them that jesus story and how that guy had to touch jesus to be sure of something...i thinks its probably like jacob touched these people to make sure that they are worthy of being candidates to take his place...all of these people's names were on that wall in the caves which means they are candidates..i dont know its just a thought..but i think it can be true :D

nah this isnt a theory, its just observation. not a difficult one to spot either. the camera clearly outlined each touch.
one thing....why would he choose john locke, knowing that he would be the one the smoke monster would take over, and kill him? he obviously knew, if you watch how he reacted ben stabbing him towards the end of the finale. like "hurry up, do it".

Good theory - it's also symbolic of who may survive until the end. Notice how they didn't show him touching anyone else on the plane E.g Boone, Michelle, the 'tailies', Charlie etc thats because they all died. They didn't show him touching Claire either even though she is still alive - possibly because she has been 'taken over'? One thing that could dispute this theory is that why didn't they show him touching Rose or Benard? Maybe they are special, or are going to die? hmmm...

he might be putting some kind of protection on them or marking them somehow. in the premier we saw sayid come back to life even though the pool was not working, maybe jacob was preparing for that? because it seemed like jacob wanted to die. this might the other losties are in for something and that theyll need protection from.

hurley: touches him makes up his mind to get on flight
jack: makes up his mind to tell on his dad, leads to him eventually getting on plane
locke: touch of life so he gets on plane for his exibition thing
sun: makes up her mind not to leave jin, get on plane
sawyer: so he keeps on searching, ends up on plane cuz of it
point is jacobs touch made the decision for them which ultimately lead them to the flight..

i think locke was simply a pawn jacob used to help jack find his path, perhaps locke was made to believe he was special and suposed to be the leader, so jack would eventually realize he had to do the same, thats why john had to die, to ensure jack would return and become the leader, we have been told numerous times jack is a natural leader. i think hurley will play a big part aswell for example he saw the cabin! i think the others time is over, the losties are the new others. my theory :D

Aparantly by touching them he 'writes' out there future if you will. He touched Kate when she stole, making her a criminal and being on flight 815. Touched Sawyer so he'd continue to write his letter and shoot the guy in Australia etc. Basically so they all end up on the island and become a protection for Jacob if you will...

Sun and Jin wasn't touched by Jacob as Children (LOL) because they wasn't needed untill they had formed a love for each other.
And Hurley was just another passenger on Oceanic 815. He wasn't needed untill he had become part of the Oceanic Six. Same with Sayid.
Again i'm not sure why exactly, can poke holes through any Lost theory I guess. Seriously can't wait to see how it all plays out in season 6!

They were both sitting on the beach playing that checkers game that acurd alot in Lost, and John took up two pieces from the game, one dark and one light.

I did a little research on this and basically the writers took a bunch of different religious stories christian/eqyptian/greek/buddhist/hindu/muslim etc etc. and threw them all together. Sticking with that theme the sister being taken ( Claire, jack's sister) is very important to the story. Obviously a few resurections will be required. Someone has to be torn into pieces. And one brother must kill another brother or (betray) another. Jsut thought I'd throw that out there see what u guys think?

Hurley was the only one touched AFTER Oceanic 815. And probably Ilana, but that doesn't matter.
And maybe this doesn't mean anything, but Kate and Sawyer lied to Jacob, and they both were kids. In fact, Sawyer didn't lie to Jacob, but he said he wasn't going to finish the letter.

I think that Aaron is Jacob. Everyone he touched were somehow connected to Aaron. Kate helped Claire giving birth. Sawyer brought him to the beach when Claire went missing. John made a cradle for Aaron. Jack is blood related to Aaron. Hurley helped Claire when they just crashed and he was like a nanny for Aaron in some episodes. Sun was there for Aaron when Claire went to seek the Staff Dharma Station. Jin gave echinoid to Claire and she could feel Aaron's first kick after crashing here.

Maybe these flashbacks did not originally happen in their lives. Maybe because they have all been to the island we see Jacob visiting them in their past (Like Faraday telling Desmond to go see his mom at Oxford). The only problem with this is that he did not visit Juliet. But maybe that is because she was already on the island when the plane crashed.
