@dirtydeeds82 I'm not surprised, I was out and about during that time so didn't watch much telly but watching the ad in full just now was pretty chilling. Was there a time it wasn't allowed to be shown before or was it on any time of day?
Ads like this work - Australia has an estimated 17,444 people living with HIV compared to the US which has an estimated 468,578..... Thats over 26 times more people living with HIV in the US DAMN!!! Shocking stats
@nymphonicz Um... but Australia has a smaller population than the state of Texas. You can't compare that statistics like that. What one should do is compare the percentage of the population infected.
hey nyctric, my uncle lived with the virus for 20yrs, he passed away from lung cancer at 38, and they say it was caused by the aids, its a suffering im sure all will agree, that i wish too see no one live through, all the antiviral drugs morning and night, 37 in the morning and 43 at night, how could one stand that sort of torture among the pains and loss of face muscle.....HOW CAN THEY NOT HAVE A FUC#KEN CURE!! WHAT A LOAD OF SHIT!! ITS BECAUSE THEY WANT TOO MAKE MONEY OUT OF PHARMACEUTICALS!!
I was shocked to hear my dad had HIV but I'm happy to know that he is cool about it and that he rarely ever gets sick. This commercial gave me nightmares when I has 6 at the time. Frightening stuff but it's intention was to get the message across, which, I think, it did.
Effing terrifying to this day. As a kid, this freaked me out. Now, as much as I think it might be going too far, I equally think it was pretty damn good at making an impact. AIDS campaigns here in Australia scared me witless as a kid, but I sure as hell remembered the messages!
not really, HAART kicks HIV's ass big time. modern medicine can't cure it but an HIV infected person who takes medicines can live upto 30 years more, pretty much an average life. prevention is best but still no big deal.
Does anyone remember another Australian AIDS prevention ad that came out around 1987 - the one with the syringes on the bed?
I was seven at the time and those AIDS awareness ads scared me to bits. Now, AIDS is not talked about as much and I think it is time to bring out more awareness adverts on TV that hit hard the message to those around late teens to 20s.
You may all laugh now, but this was 21 years ago when the hysteria of HIV and AIDS was everywhere. This got the message through that prevention is better then a cure. If it scared people, good. If it shocked people, good. Job done. Now Australia has the lowest HIV/AIDS rates in the developed world. Australia was the first to introduce needle exchanges & free condoms at sex venues. Resulting in other countries taking on this model that prevention IS better then a cure.
This commerical was very controversial at the time. Since AIDS was new no one knew what it really was so they got even more scared... the government had to pull this commercial, but they later put it because it did save many lives... I learned this from my teacher in world geography.
Fletcherm, when this ad came out AIDS was still quite new. No one really understood the real implications of the disease. And it is true, most people did only think that AIDS was a "gays" disease. So its not horrible, it shocked people into taking precautions and that is a good thing. Would you would rather people not be afraid of AIDS and just continue to have sex in ignorance of the disease?
The Grim reaper campaighn was very contaversal but also successful. One of the first shock adds on Australian TV. As horrible as it was it sent the message that we are all vurnable to the disease and because of this it proberbly saved the lives of many Australians.
basically aids was first spread in the community by gays....... so geez thanks for that. I was 10 when this ad came out and didnt even know what a gay was. The truth of the matter is most people still feel the same way about homos that they did 20 years ago. its just we are forced into silence under the guise of tolerance by left wing do gooders
THe reason why the government acted quickly on this was the fact that there was an alarming amount of IV drug users with the virus. Most of the users were straight. They had to act otherwise the virus would have spread like wildfire, as this is a virus spread by having sex. (yes, even IV drug users had sex.) Please, it is 2008, I simply do not buy that it is a GAY virus, AIDS does not discriminate, only people do. Educate yourself before you post this sort of bigoted garbage.

Terrifying yes but it was designed to get the message across. I think it was quite effective in that sense.

He sounds a bit like Richard Burton doesn't he. Except he was dead by 1987.

Agreed. AIDS can effect anyone and to say only gay guys get it is a close minded and homophobic attitude.
