Ok... I'm just 22 and never really watched Sanders in his prime and all I saw of Emmit Smith was a run down old man almost crawling as an Arizona Cardinal to the rushing record... That said, after watching some highlights, the other good short and sturdy running backs (Ray Rice and MJD) just don't do it for me anymore, you know?
Barry Sanders....the best RB ever to play the game. the best player on the lions besides Barry was Herman Moore. Thats about it. Cowboys Troy Aikman, The Whole offense line, Michael Irvin, Alvin Harper, Emmit, Daryl Johnston, Jay Novecek. Regardless of negative yards. emmit by far had the advantage. Barry literally had to run for his life to get a couple yards. is there really a comparison here?
look at replays of Barrys runs as soon as he gets handed the ball there is someone in his face. As for Emmit he had big enough holes to drive a truck through. Both are great players but Barry MADE things happen
I am a cowboys fan. . .that being said, Emmit Smith is a great back compared to most running backs, however when you compare him to Barry (im not even going to use his last name!) Emmit FUCKING SUCKS!!!
How the fuck can people say Emmit Smith was better than Sanders.
The rule for RBs is: "you're only as good as your O-line"
Smith has the most DOMINANT line of the decade. Larry Allen, Erik Williams, Mark Stepnoski - are you fucking kidding me??? A cow could have rushed for a 1,000 yards with that line.
Barry is the exception to that rule because he could make plays on his own.
I'm not saying Emmit was a bad player, but comparing him to Barry means you're stupid...or you're a Cowboys fan.
@ElCuloChulo Emmit was the best.Barry had Lomas brown and Ray Glover both pro bowl players and was turf back and most importantly couldn't punch it in from the goal line like a dick going right into a wet pussy.Emmitt could do that better then any back in the history of the game, he had a nose for the end zone.Sanders has the record for most yards lost in history of the nfl.He was also a poor playoff performer. Smith also holds all the major rushing records. He was better receiver too.
@ElCuloChulo Barry was a horrible blocker also.Stop with the dominate line bullshit Emmitt played in the nfc which was the toughest division in football Giants,Eagles,Skins. You give me a better argument then the line bs.Barry was always taken out of the game when the lions got in the redzone. He could not run a off tackle or a belly play.Or go up the middle and punch it in.I watched his whole career did you??
@themetalgod21 "Stop with the dominate line bullshit" Since you're such an ignorant fuck, I'll help you out and list them for you. -Mark Stepnoski: 6 Pro-Bowls -Erik Williams: 4 Pro-Bowls -Mark Tuinei: 2 Pro-Bowl -Nate Newton: 6 Pro-Bowls -Larry Allen: 11 Pro-Bowls / future Hall-of-Famer That's arguably the greatest offensive line EVER. Learn how to analyze football first before you post your dumb bullshit on here. Btw, the "nfc" is not a division, it's a conference dipshit. =]
@ElCuloChulo Excuse me i forgot to say east, if you would have read further you would have seen east !!!!You should have known!!!!! Your so blind you don't see anything.Your so far up Barry's butt you don't want to "hear" anything.I know you never watched Barry's career cause if you did you would know i'm right.Look at all of his highlights never busting up the middle to score.
@themetalgod21 Actually yeah, you kinda notice that he never really scored from up close, it was always some really long, elusive run that just happened to end in a touchdown, but he was never a goal line guy... But still, Emmit Smith wasn't as good as he was. Switch them up and you probably get Barry breaking that record in the same amount of time he played.
You make a great point. Emmit Smith was on a great Cowboys team which helped a great deal with his success; and Barry was the on STAR on a struggling franchise. Barry was the greatest!
@ElCuloChulo In one year Barry and Emmit both were averaging 5 yds/carry. But Barry was hit after 1 yard and gained 4 more, Emmit was hit after 4 yards and gain 1 more.
No joke. The Cowboys favorite run play with Smith was the "lead draw" where the O-line blast a hole right through the middle of the defense and Smith went untouched the first 6/7 yards consistently.
@ElCuloChulo This summer at a football camp in dallas cowboys stadium I asked Emmit at an autograph signing; "Who do you think is the best Runningback of all time?" he said "20 easy, but I got 3 rings"
The ghost is right emmit smith always had a big line and hall of fame receivers and qb. Took him 22 years to do what Barry could of did I'n fifteen seasons
There's certain players you walk into a game against and when you line up against them you have a respect for them. Barry was the guy that made all the people on defense, even the coordinator just say, shit. He took the air out of your lungs and couldn't be stopped. His skill set was just so rare. Up to that point there really hadn't been a player in the super bowl era that possessed talents like his. Can you imagine being the guy charged with defending him all game in man to man?? lol
Herman Moore was not equivalent to Irvin, Herman Moore was a 6ft4 slow possesion receiver with good hands. He was no Michael Irvin. No coincedence he had his good 4year stretch during Barrys best years 1994-1998 season. What happened after that? 16rec in 4 games in 99 then 40rec in full 16 games in 2000 then out of the league 2yrs later. Detroit's RB year after Barry 3.5yds per carry as a team. Detroit Sucked major ass up until this year. Since he retired.
@PhillipDeGraves I will agree to disagree. O-line for Walter was the best, Jim played in a league of Hit or Miss, and Barry had to run 20 yards just to reach the scrimmage line, so I stick with my assessment.
I'm only 20. So I didn't really see Emmit or Barry in their prime (I don't recall seeing Barry at all). Both are obviously great. They had long NFL careers. But based off of the stats and those FUCKING HIGHLIGHTS...Barry was unparralleled.
@KrfNYC2 You're 100% right about Barry. Another one of my favorites was Bo Jackson. They had completely different styles but Bo... Bo was ridiculous too. He was a pro bowler and potential hall of famer before suffering a career ending injury and the man was an All Star outfielder for the KC Royals and won MVP in the '89 All Star Game, if you don't know, check him out too. Those were the days... lol
Everytime i watch the vikings play and i see Peterson getting the ball i can't even react to his speed because right when he gets that ball he is already through the line. Thats speed and power.
Adrian Peterson runs very violently (lots of collisions) he'll stuff it right in there at full speed. I don't think he will play as long as some of the other great backs. It sure is fun watching him play though.
@dawhiteguy622: naw, I think u on crystal meth and shrooms! Maybe acid too. U say Dallas had a power running game?!!!! Emmit wasn't a power runner, they had a power line. Emmit usually ain't see contact until he got to the LB's or the secondary. He had the best line of the 90's era. If Barry had that luxury or not had to make a spectacular move until he faced a LB or a safety he would of had consecutive 1700yrd seasons throughout his career easy!
@Trippah313 100% correct sir. Sterling Sharpe said on T.V. "that if Barry had Emmitt's O-Line...he would've rushed for 2000 yards every year"! Then said, "pardon me, I meant 3000"! A lot backs would've killed it with that Dallas O-line..no one could've done what Barry did with that Detroit O-line!
@mta415 i'm a cowboy hater, but you're right, if barry had a line like that in front of him, who knows what kind of numbers he would have put up, and how many super bowls the cowboys would have won.
@dawhiteguy622: maaaaaaaaan u must smoke crack cocaine to say tha shit u say about Barry. He played for the Lions and had 10 str8 1000yrd seasons the ONLY NFL RB to ever do that! Over Barrys career how many times has a Lions O lineman for the Lions went to the pro bowl???? Twice and never started. Emmit played with a OL that sent 4 pro bowl starters for 6 years.
@26MJK: thank you!..... I see that u actually watched the Lions games. I'm from Detroit I watch em all, u have the smartest comment in the last 6/mo. These other fools in here speak as if the lions were this great team and Barry was along for the ride..... Barry made the lions
@Trippah313 Thats why they went 4-3 without him in the lineup right? In 95 the Lions had the #2 PASSING game in the league behind ONLY the 49ers with Rice and Young. No one is saying Barry was"along forthe ride" What I am saying is that Barry didn't "do it all by himself"...THAT is a ridiculous statement!
@dawhiteguy622 apparently you're the moron given the actual players around the league even say his line was junk. i'll take their word over yours not to mention i watched all those games. them making the playoffs is irrelevant...the ravens won a SB with dilfer and their offense overall was horrendous. mitchell was avg at best and over half their line was non-existent. if their line is as good as you believe they are then barry wouldn't have lead in all-time negative yards
people most often say walter payton was the best back ever yet barry avg 5yds/carry over 10yrs with the worst offensive line ever while payton avg 4.4 in 13yrs and won a SB. barry had 830 fewers carries and only 1500yds less as well as 11TD fewer too. all while playing behind no offensive line and with little talent elsewhere. barry was a freak and if he played a 13-15yr career he would have destroyed all records. just imagine how good he would have been on a winning team
@Elthenar HAHAHAHAHAHAH.....Most yards in regular AND postseason, Most touchdowns in regular AND postseason, only RB to ever win a rushing titile, MVP, and superbowl MVP in the same season (while playing 14 games), SECOND ALL TIME IN total yards and total TD's behind ONLY Jerry RIce, and you think he isn't top ten??? GTFOH!
@dawhiteguy622 Yes, in spite of all of that yes. He holds those career marks ONLY because Barry Sanders and Jim Brown decided to retire early, and also because he played on an all time great time with one of the best O-lines in history. Imagine if Barry Sanders, Ladanian Tomlinlinson or Adrian Peterson played on the Cowboys team, Emmitt wouldn't have been the starter.
@Elthenar I love when people say that Emmitt was only good bc he had a good team....which is COMPLETE BS. Dallas had Aikman, Irvin, Moose, Mark Tuinie, Nate Newton among others in 89 and they went 1-15! Emmitt came in and EVERY year they won a superbowl EMMITT was the NFL's leading rusher. He CARRIED them through the playoffs (something Sanders and Brown NEVER did) Without Emmitt in the lineup they went 1-6...if that team was so good why could they not win before him or when he was out?
@dawhiteguy622 You make some good points, but you make it sound like the other guys on that team where probowlers when Emmitt was drafted. Aikman and Johnston were going into their second years. Most everyone else only had a year or two in the league as well. RB's normally develop faster than any other player, so when Emmitt was drafted and the rest of the team gelled, Emmitt exploded.
Jim Brown though, you can't touch him.The man averaged a full yard more per carry than Emmitt. He was the best
@26JMK "worst line ever"???? You're a moron if you believe that, and he had PLENTY of talent elsewhere...thats why they made the playoffs in 5 of his 10 seasons, LOMAS BROWN, KEVIN GLOVER, HERMAN MOORE, Scott Mitchell even put up good numbers.
@AGCTOWN: well put, u damn right! If Barry played for either Jim browns era, or for Emmit smiths Cowboys team he would have averaged a 1800-2000 yrd season all 10 of his years. Here's a fact, Barry Sanders is one of the all-time leading rusher, and he also leads NFL history in most runs for a loss, who can do that!
@Trippah313 bullshit....Dallas ran a power run game...Barry wouldn't have survived in a power game OR in the NFC east where there was actually TALENTED defenses. Look at what Barry did in the playoffs....NOT SHIT!
Oh and my #2 is OJ Simpson Just do your history and research and you will find out that the Steel Curtain (specifically Jack Lambert) will have no arguments there. 3 Eric Dickerson 4 Walter Payton 5 Emmit Smith 6 Bo Jackson 7 Jim Thorpe 8 Jim Brown 9 Earl Campbell 10 Bronko Nagurski Today Props- Adrian Peterson-Chris Johnson-Ladanian Tomlinson
@AGCTOWN LoL, OJ was NOT THAT GOOD. Not even close to #2. Maybe top 20.............MAYBE. Look at his season by season stats. I know for a fact that 3/4 of his seasons he didn't even score 10 td's. He had many sub 1000yd FULL seasons. I've also heard Jack Lamber consider him the most overrated player in all sports history, not just NFL, but all sports. He may be yer #2 favorite, but if it is definitely not because of his game play.
OJ did indeed have 2 of the best seasons ever though
You people are either too dang young or too old n stubborn to realize how good Barry Sanders was. Here's a reminder oh n how many 2000 yard rushing seasons did your #1 RB dish out? The facts are here and being frank if you put him on Jim Browns 1960-70's teams he's destroying all the records even more so by running around a bunch of slow white boy defenses-and put him behind Emmit Smiths Hall of Fame O Line of the 90's and they Win atleast 6 Superbowl Rings in that decade. Rent a Barry Sanders
@AGCTOWN You're insane....Barry straight FOLDED in the playoffs like cheap oragami. Ontop of that did you know that the Lions actually went 4-3 WITHOUT him in the lineup? Dallas went 1-6 without Emmitt in the lineup over his career!
@dawhiteguy622 In the playoffs, teams can focus on Barry all day long.
Lions had no QB or offense other than Barry.
Dallas had Aikman, Irvin, and the best O-Line of that generation. Not to mention an amazing defense, even had the best CB ever in Deion Sanders... Lions had no defense.
@bio2020 Dallas had Aikman, Irvin, Johnston, Tuinie, Nate Newton, etc in 89 and went 1-15. Also Barry had Scott Mitchell in 95 when the Lions had the #2 passing game in the league and Herman Moore (who is equivalent to Irvin) had the 4th best season ever by a WR. Oh...how about Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover making a combined 8 pro bowls? Or the fact that AIkman only had ONE season with 20+ TD's? How about that when Emmitt was out Dallas went 1-6 but the LIons 4-3 w/o Barry?
@dawhiteguy622 LMAO Scott Mitchell, #2 passing offense why? BARRY SANDERS...what did Mitchell do in other years? Name his other QBs, Andre Ware? Rodney Peete?. Simply put not to compare college to the pros, but look at Barry with a decent blocking line, where he doesnt have to break a tackle as soon as he gets the ball. Best season for a RB in college football history. Check the difference in Emmits Runs and Barry's Runs. And you will see the huge differences, in why Barry had negative yds
How about in 1991 when the Lions BEAT Dallas 38-6 in the Divisional playoffs? Face it Bro....Barry just choked in the playoffs, he had ONE TD and it was im that game against Dallas, when they were up 21+ with 3 mins left, minus that and he had 90 att for 342 yds and 0 TDS in 6 games.....GARBAGE! Barry was spectacular, and his highlights are rediculous. But best ever? NOT A CHANCE. He couldn't block, power run, was a quitter, folded under pressure, and lost more yards than ANYONE ever!
@dawhiteguy622 naw i mean you have to be a dallas fan. cause if you think Barry Sanders was lame you don't know sports talent and unconventional thinking.... Barry Sanders had the DETROIT LIONS... They suck even back then they sucked. They had no team except him.. The O-line was garbage and the defense was too.. if it wasn't for him they would probably not even exist anymore like the Oilers.
@dawhiteguy622 4-3 isnt really a good record.. yeah its more wins than losses but the losses would've caught up had he not come back in especially against some of the better teams... i mean dont get me wrong they are all professionals and get paid to win and they try to do that with or without the team captain but certain players still make certain teams who they are.
Sorry for re commenting but the text limit stopped my argument. Bronco Nargoski was one of the most feared tackler of his time he was 6'2" 226. Adrian Peterson is 6'1" 227... He would have had 300 yards a game at that time
I do think that Barry Sanders is the best of all time. The only argument I need is that he played for the lions and had a bunch of scrubs blocking for him. He put up the numbers he did with a crap supporting cast. With that being said I would like to say that I hate when the players get the nod as being better just because they played first. If you took Chris Johnson, AD and LT (in his prime) and put them in the league in the early years they would never be stopped.
@FedEx53 Good one man, real funny. As many people have said Barry struck a different type of fear in defenders eyes. The fear of embarrassment. Faggot
When it's all said and done. No sir. LT is sick but not that sick. Come on man. AD is just as fast, twice as strong, twice as big and just as agile. AD is a freak it's no one's fault that he was born like that. LT had an offensive line and running scheme that Barry Sanders could only dream of. If Barry Sanders got the home cooking that LT and Emmit Smith had he would have never been tackled. No way dude the only RB's better than AD are Barry Sanders, Jim Brown and Walter Payton
@Broguyman If you put Jim Brown in the league today he would burn it up now just as he did in the 60s. The training is better so therefore Brown would be stronger and faster. Jim Brown is the greatest of all time (no contest) with Sanders or Walter Payton vying for second. Gale Sayers is in fourth place. Then the debate begins about fifth place and the rest can compete in that cateogory.
@JohnNesdoly Jim Brown was one of the greatest backs in NFL history, but he had an offensive line. He was the strongest back who could run through people without contest, but he ran through the middle 7/10 times. His offensive line opened great holes for him throughout his career & he ended with 5.2 YPC. Barry Sanders was a Detroit Lion, nuff said. He had no quarter-back, no offensive line, nothing to take any pressure off of him. He created his own holes and opportunities with his moves.
@XxReaperZeroxX Yeah but when Jim Brown played there was only running, passin wasn't invented yet. And they wore leather helmets, and slavery had just ended so it was definetly tougher for him.
@cmbsoldja 1. People were passing since the 20s, Jim Brown was 50-60s. 2. In the 50-60s, they already switched from leather to plastic/padding but still used one bar. And besides, how the hell does leather helmets affect your ability to run? 3. He was a starting running back. They ran him every down. He was the team MVP. The entire league loved him. He actually retired to become an actor because he was so ultra-popular. And finally 4. Slavery ended in the 1860s, he began playing 100 years later.
@JohnNesdoly you have to stay healthy to be in the debate, Gale was good when he played but he couldnt stay healthy which automatically takes him out of consideration in the top 5
@leshager2009 That might be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I guess Earl called the plays, right? NO. His coaches ran him into the ground because he was unstoppable.
brown played for championship winning teams. No doubt he had a better supporting cast. Jim Brown is a legend and his stats were ridiculous compared to anyone else in his era and even today to a lesser extent. But Barry is right up there. If he had been lucky enough to play on championship teams he would get a lot more credit then he does. And football is not a sport where you can judge a player purely by stats........ individual stats are dependant on many team based factors
@FedEx53 actually i think barry struck more fear, earl would beat the shit out of you physically, but barry's style was such that you had to run and use angles just to have a shot at hitting him, and it was not really a sure thing, every defender who ever played earl talked about how brutal he was, but every single player who tackled barry in the open field brags about it today. "I actually stopped him! we met up with turf on either side of us, AND I ACTUALLY MANAGED TO MAKE THE HIT!!!"
@FedEx53 Barry>Earl. Earl Campbell was a great back but Barry Sanders was a notch above him. Barry has 6000 more yards than Campbell in his career and Barry is also had the rare 2000 yard season in 1997. Earl Campbell=Great player. Barry Sanders=legendary one of kind player.
@FedEx53 barry struck a different kind of fear into the defenders. much like peyton manning does, manning himself isnt scary but how he dissects and picks apart your defense is....the fear of sanders was just not getting embarrassed.
@FedEx53 but Barry's defenders also was lookin at grass and other defenders when he steped in front of them...I agree I am big on Payton, Earl, and Jim, because I'm a bruiser back myself but the fear Barry put in ppl was a lil diff from those bigger guys barry was a lil guy in a big man's league
@neoconretard speed starts to slowly decline after 25 which is why burners don't have longevity and strength peaks at age 30, but the power runners decline from the punishment prematurely. guys who rely on balance and elusiveness last the longest like emitt, barry, LT and walter.
@neoconretard ya but that's really the Oilers' coaches' fault, they're the ones who rode him into the ground every damn play. They knew they had a guy that could dominate so they used his ass like a workhorse.
@FedEx53 No, defensive players think when trying to tackle barry: "fuck, i'm gonna be humiliated on national television cuz I can't tackle a guy half my size."
@ViciousZeroEnder I'd prefer being humiliated on national television by not being able to tackle one of the shiftiest backs ever as opposed to being plowed into the ground and forced into a 15 minute concussion by the most powerful runner ever, only to finally awaken, surrounded by my teammates and cameras, while they laugh at the fact that I've shit my pants
@FedEx53 Whats more embarrassing, getting injured from getting rammed by earl campbell? Or getting injured without even touching Barry Sanders? I'd pick the latter.
@FedEx53 Whats more embarrassing, getting injured from getting rammed by earl campbell? Or getting injured without even touching Barry Sanders? I'd pick the latter. (IE SEARCH rod woodson barry sanders)
@FedEx53 He didn't pull a muscle, he tore his ACL. I don't know about you, but I'd rather be Isiah Robertson in than Rod Woodson in those scenarios, b/c atleast Robertson could get up and play again. Woodson was out for the rest of the season (-superbowl)
@FedEx53 Breaking your knee from a JUKE is far more embarrassing than getting a crushed by a headbutt. A headbutt means you atleast touched him(or rather, he touched you lol). a juke means you didn't even get to touch him, and in barry's case, you still got injured. It's like woodson broke his own knee, cuz barry sanders faked him out.
@XXDeathxCore depends on what you like. you obviously like backs that shy away from contact and juke around n shit. As I have stated, I like power runners.
@XXDeathxCore Barry has broken more tackles than Earl. Earl was a great back no doubt. But the stats don't lie, Barry is the greatest. Emmitt Smith is overrated.
@FedEx53 ya but those backs that are the fast lil rabbits have longer careers lol although i do love to see backs pancake linebackers and secondaries
@irishmadman409 Ya, but not if you tear your ACL's on one of those quick cuts. I also find it ironic that you post that comment on a Barry video, who is known for having a "too short" career. But you're right, backs that try to avoid contact usually play longer.
@FedEx53 ya but sanders retired not because he was to old and not because he was hurt he retired because he lost the love of the game he wasnt playing anymore for himself he quit because it was something he wanted to do yes he ended his own career early and he is the only one that truly knows why
@FedEx53 hell no...barry sanders made it look like the ground waz moving when he waz running....also barry had no block so he juz had 2 run 4 hiz life on every run....amagine earl on the detroit lionz.....he wouldnt even b talked about
What do adrian and barry have in common? barry was an amazing half back on a terrible team. Adrian is an amazing half back on a terrible team.

@themetalgod21
"Emmitt could do that better then any back in the history of the game, he had a nose for the end zone"
Ummm...maybe the fact that he played with the most dominant line of the decade had something to do with that...
Then there's the fact he played with Aikman and Irvin who took the safety out of the box.
So here's what we have: 7 man fronts with the best offensive line in the league to punch it in.
-Try using better arguments next time.
;)))

@ElCuloChulo Barry was a horrible blocker also.Stop with the dominate line bullshit Emmitt played in the nfc which was the toughest division in football Giants,Eagles,Skins. You give me a better argument then the line bs.Barry was always taken out of the game when the lions got in the redzone. He could not run a off tackle or a belly play.Or go up the middle and punch it in.I watched his whole career did you??

@themetalgod21 Actually yeah, you kinda notice that he never really scored from up close, it was always some really long, elusive run that just happened to end in a touchdown, but he was never a goal line guy... @2badger2
No joke. The Cowboys favorite run play with Smith was the "lead draw" where the O-line blast a hole right through the middle of the defense and Smith went untouched the first 6/7 yards consistently.
Barry never had that kind of luxury.

Can you imagine being the guy charged with defending him all game in man to man?? lol
seacaptain72 3 months ago
Herman Moore was not equivalent to Irvin, Herman Moore was a 6ft4 slow possesion receiver with good hands. He was no Michael Irvin. No coincedence he had his good 4year stretch during Barrys best years 1994-1998 season. What happened after that? 16rec in 4 games in 99 then 40rec in full 16 games in 2000 then out of the league 2yrs later. Detroit's RB year after Barry 3.5yds per carry as a team. Detroit Sucked major ass up until this year. Since he retired.

Trippah313 5 months ago 2
@Trippah313 100% correct sir. Sterling Sharpe said on T.V. "that if Barry had Emmitt's O-Line...he would've rushed for 2000 yards every year"! Then said, "pardon me, I meant 3000"! A lot backs would've killed it with that Dallas O-line..no one could've done what Barry did with that Detroit O-line!

Trippah313 5 months ago
@Trippah313 Thats why they went 4-3 without him in the lineup right? In 95 the Lions had the #2 PASSING game in the league behind ONLY the 49ers with Rice and Young. No one is saying Barry was"along forthe ride" What I am saying is that Barry didn't "do it all by himself"...THAT is a ridiculous statement!
dawhiteguy622 5 months ago
@dawhiteguy622 apparently you're the moron given the actual players around the league even say his line was junk. i'll take their word over yours not to mention i watched all those games. them making the playoffs is irrelevant...the ravens won a SB with dilfer and their offense overall was horrendous. mitchell was avg at best and over half their line was non-existent. if their line is as good as you believe they are then barry wouldn't have lead in all-time negative yards
26JMK 5 months ago
people most often say walter payton was the best back ever yet barry avg 5yds/carry over 10yrs with the worst offensive line ever while payton avg 4.4 in 13yrs and won a SB. barry had 830 fewers carries and only 1500yds less as well as 11TD fewer too. all while playing behind no offensive line and with little talent elsewhere. barry was a freak and if he played a 13-15yr career he would have destroyed all records. just imagine how good he would have been on a winning team
26JMK 5 months ago
@26JMK Jim Brown is still the best back ever, but I do agree that Barry is probably #2. Emmitt is not even in the top 10 IMO.
Elthenar 5 months ago
@Elthenar HAHAHAHAHAHAH.....Most yards in regular AND postseason, Most touchdowns in regular AND postseason, only RB to ever win a rushing titile, MVP, and superbowl MVP in the same season (while playing 14 games), SECOND ALL TIME IN total yards and total TD's behind ONLY Jerry RIce, and you think he isn't top ten??? GTFOH!
dawhiteguy622 5 months ago
@dawhiteguy622 Yes, in spite of all of that yes. He holds those career marks ONLY because Barry Sanders and Jim Brown decided to retire early, and also because he played on an all time great time with one of the best O-lines in history. Imagine if Barry Sanders, Ladanian Tomlinlinson or Adrian Peterson played on the Cowboys team, Emmitt wouldn't have been the starter.
Elthenar 5 months ago
@Elthenar I love when people say that Emmitt was only good bc he had a good team....which is COMPLETE BS. Dallas had Aikman, Irvin, Moose, Mark Tuinie, Nate Newton among others in 89 and they went 1-15! Emmitt came in and EVERY year they won a superbowl EMMITT was the NFL's leading rusher. He CARRIED them through the playoffs (something Sanders and Brown NEVER did) Without Emmitt in the lineup they went 1-6...if that team was so good why could they not win before him or when he was out?
dawhiteguy622 5 months ago
@dawhiteguy622 You make some good points, but you make it sound like the other guys on that team where probowlers when Emmitt was drafted. Aikman and Johnston were going into their second years. Most everyone else only had a year or two in the league as well. RB's normally develop faster than any other player, so when Emmitt was drafted and the rest of the team gelled, Emmitt exploded.
Jim Brown though, you can't touch him.The man averaged a full yard more per carry than Emmitt. He was the best
Elthenar 5 months ago
@26JMK "worst line ever"???? You're a moron if you believe that, and he had PLENTY of talent elsewhere...thats why they made the playoffs in 5 of his 10 seasons, LOMAS BROWN, KEVIN GLOVER, HERMAN MOORE, Scott Mitchell even put up good numbers.

AGCTOWN 6 months ago
@AGCTOWN LoL, OJ was NOT THAT GOOD. Not even close to #2. Maybe top 20.............MAYBE. Look at his season by season stats. I know for a fact that 3/4 of his seasons he didn't even score 10 td's. He had many sub 1000yd FULL seasons. I've also heard Jack Lamber consider him the most overrated player in all sports history, not just NFL, but all sports. He may be yer #2 favorite, but if it is definitely not because of his game play.
OJ did indeed have 2 of the best seasons ever though
telly152 6 months ago
You people are either too dang young or too old n stubborn to realize how good Barry Sanders was. Here's a reminder oh n how many 2000 yard rushing seasons did your #1 RB dish out? The facts are here and being frank if you put him on Jim Browns 1960-70's teams he's destroying all the records even more so by running around a bunch of slow white boy defenses-and put him behind Emmit Smiths Hall of Fame O Line of the 90's and they Win atleast 6 Superbowl Rings in that decade. Rent a Barry Sanders
AGCTOWN 6 months ago
@AGCTOWN You're insane....Barry straight FOLDED in the playoffs like cheap oragami. Ontop of that did you know that the Lions actually went 4-3 WITHOUT him in the lineup? Dallas went 1-6 without Emmitt in the lineup over his career!
dawhiteguy622 5 months ago
@dawhiteguy622 In the playoffs, teams can focus on Barry all day long.
Lions had no QB or offense other than Barry.
Dallas had Aikman, Irvin, and the best O-Line of that generation. Not to mention an amazing defense, even had the best CB ever in Deion Sanders... Lions had no defense.
bio2020 5 months ago
@bio2020 Dallas had Aikman, Irvin, Johnston, Tuinie, Nate Newton, etc in 89 and went 1-15. Also Barry had Scott Mitchell in 95 when the Lions had the #2 passing game in the league and Herman Moore (who is equivalent to Irvin) had the 4th best season ever by a WR. Oh...how about Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover making a combined 8 pro bowls? Or the fact that AIkman only had ONE season with 20+ TD's? How about that when Emmitt was out Dallas went 1-6 but the LIons 4-3 w/o Barry?
dawhiteguy622 5 months ago
@dawhiteguy622 LMAO Scott Mitchell, #2 passing offense why? BARRY SANDERS...what did Mitchell do in other years? Name his other QBs, Andre Ware? Rodney Peete?. Simply put not to compare college to the pros, but look at Barry with a decent blocking line, where he doesnt have to break a tackle as soon as he gets the ball. Best season for a RB in college football history. Check the difference in Emmits Runs and Barry's Runs. And you will see the huge differences, in why Barry had negative yds
villilo81 3 months ago
How about in 1991 when the Lions BEAT Dallas 38-6 in the Divisional playoffs? Face it Bro....Barry just choked in the playoffs, he had ONE TD and it was im that game against Dallas, when they were up 21+ with 3 mins left, minus that and he had 90 att for 342 yds and 0 TDS in 6 games.....GARBAGE! Barry was spectacular, and his highlights are rediculous. But best ever? NOT A CHANCE. He couldn't block, power run, was a quitter, folded under pressure, and lost more yards than ANYONE ever!
dawhiteguy622 5 months ago
@dawhiteguy622 naw i mean you have to be a dallas fan. cause if you think Barry Sanders was lame you don't know sports talent and unconventional thinking.... Barry Sanders had the DETROIT LIONS... They suck even back then they sucked. They had no team except him.. The O-line was garbage and the defense was too.. if it wasn't for him they would probably not even exist anymore like the Oilers.
Chiboy591 5 months ago

@dawhiteguy622 4-3 isnt really a good record.. yeah its more wins than losses but the losses would've caught up had he not come back in especially against some of the better teams... i mean dont get me wrong they are all professionals and get paid to win and they try to do that with or without the team captain but certain players still make certain teams who they are.

I do think that Barry Sanders is the best of all time. The only argument I need is that he played for the lions and had a bunch of scrubs blocking for him. He put up the numbers he did with a crap supporting cast. With that being said I would like to say that I hate when the players get the nod as being better just because they played first.
Broguyman 7 months ago
@Broguyman If you put Jim Brown in the league today he would burn it up now just as he did in the 60s. The training is better so therefore Brown would be stronger and faster. Jim Brown is the greatest of all time (no contest) with Sanders or Walter Payton vying for second. Gale Sayers is in fourth place. Then the debate begins about fifth place and the rest can compete in that cateogory.
JohnNesdoly 7 months ago
@JohnNesdoly Jim Brown was one of the greatest backs in NFL history, but he had an offensive line. He was the strongest back who could run through people without contest, but he ran through the middle 7/10 times. His offensive line opened great holes for him throughout his career & he ended with 5.2 YPC. Barry Sanders was a Detroit Lion, nuff said. He had no quarter-back, no offensive line, nothing to take any pressure off of him. He created his own holes and opportunities with his moves.
XxReaperZeroxX 7 months ago 14
@XxReaperZeroxX Yeah but when Jim Brown played there was only running, passin wasn't invented yet. And they wore leather helmets, and slavery had just ended so it was definetly tougher for him.
cmbsoldja 3 months ago
@cmbsoldja 1. People were passing since the 20s, Jim Brown was 50-60s. 2. In the 50-60s, they already switched from leather to plastic/padding but still used one bar. And besides, how the hell does leather helmets affect your ability to run? 3. He was a starting running back. They ran him every down. He was the team MVP. The entire league loved him. He actually retired to become an actor because he was so ultra-popular. And finally 4. Slavery ended in the 1860s, he began playing 100 years later.
