I raised one a while ago, it too was abandoned in a drainage ditch in Hawaii Kai. For those wondering, yes they are illegal in the US but Hawaii had them introduced back in the 1800's so they occur naturally here. Yes they are a handful to raise. Good luck finding a pup, unless you're an expert and are able to locate a den and try and seperate a mother from her baby, your chances are slim. You'd be better off going to Vegas and hitting the lottery then coming across a stray pup.
@MsNiceDick yeah he had a ton of energy, so much energy he would dig holes in the carpet and drywall. my other mongoose vid shows the kinda trouble he would get into on a daily basis
@Amandork456 I doubt youll ever get to see a baby young enough to tame. I got mine before its eyes were even open and was only about 4 inches long. they eat pretty much anything, from papaya and carrots to meat and fruit loops. cat food is also a good replacement for fresh foods(sort of).
@MH2topspot aw ok. well ur mongoose is adorable. n it must've been sooo cute when u first got it, it still is in this vid :) but thanks for the reply n the info
@McEddi3 LOL MONGOOSE HAVE FAST LIGHTING REFLEX'sS i dont think the snake would win out of every snake vs mongoose vid ive seen the mongoose has always one
There are mongooses at my school of laulima they can only be seen numerously in the afternoon, staff says we are not suppost to touch them or they'll bite, pft like we could catch them anyway....T_T
@1995bartels Yeah, or mongooses. Totally interchangeble. In fact, it's not bad etiquette to use the two terms in the same sentence. Just confuses people. Which is also not bad etiquette.
*disclaimer: Just because it isn't bad, doesn't make it good.
People who keep saying stuff like, you shouldn't remove them from the wild, well shut up! We don't care about your opinion and plus they life a happier, longer, safer life with people, and plus all animals are wild at once, even dogs and cats and fish, and also if its from a breeder its not from the wild it was born in captivity! Plus what do you think a zoo is? So all saying stuff like that just don't say it!
I really hate when people are like, You shouldn't remove them from the wild, well all animals are wild at once even dogs, plus you should mind you own buisness, you can have your opinion and none of us want to hear it! plus there happier with people, safer, and life a longer and fuller life!
I love these little guys. The Crocodile Hunter Crock Files theme went well with that one part of the video. It's a wildlife show right in your living room. Tiger vs. mongoose. LOL I'm curious now as to what was with the 9 random pictures at the very end of the video. Pretty odd ending. Didn't expect that.
yep! We would all luv a meerkat, but they are amongst many species of mongoose banned in da U.S.A. The only species we have now is the cusimanse on the mainland, and for u lucky Hawaiians, the small Indian mongoose, and thats only by default!
Also, NO- mongoose aren't "Domesticated"(But I'd rather have one than a Pit-Bull Terrier dog-ANYDAY! Try having one of "them" bite you &count how many stitches you'll need!) But, anyhoo, yes, ANY creature can bite you-from my baby mink-to my mothers parrots. It's just that becoming a "teenager"-awash with hormones is traumatic for any animal(Even us!) That is why you need to neuter& descent them to curb their aggreesive nature-Also getting babies will help, also.
good point, unlike a pit or rott, the mongoose isn't capable of killing you. Unless of course he got at the balls - then you're fucked - that shit would get crushed. I still have yet to meet the kung fu master that can dodge a ball shot from a mongoose, but then again, I don't travel much.
You would need many stitches say if a pit bit your arm. They lock thier jaws and are extremely fast and agile. If one bit your arm you would need a new arm. Trust me I should know. My old neighbors could climb a tree if it was atleast slanted 97 degrees.
You're assuming that I have nothing to back up my claim. I did look it up. Wander over to google, won't you, and search for "pitbull locking jaws". I guarantee that the first result you will get will tell you it's a myth.
Okay I belive cooks that write these things over my own past experince thank you sir. And by locking jaws I meant a strong grip not fucking "locking" as in the locking the tires of a drag racer so it cant turn. Thanks for backing up your claim with something you haven't experienced.
Then state that they have a strong PSI. Don't perpetuate a myth that offends both the dogs that I own and love and myself, in turn. (I am fully aware that pitbulls have a strong bite. I haven't experienced it because I haven't given a dog a reason to, whether by being a bad pet owner or causing the dog to be aggressive.)
They do NOT lock their jaws. They are no different than other dogs except for enlarged musculature around the jaw. There is no way for them to "lock" however.
Strong jaw muscles do not equal locked...locked would refer to the bone structure locking in a way that is impossible to open without breaking the bones in the jaw.
I guess you still didnt understand that was like a week ago please leave me alone. Everyone makes such a big deal over things that don't fucking matter!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a ferret in Oregon, but when i came back to Hawaii i couldn't bring her with me. I was wondering if mongoose are good pets? Like would they go back to their natural instincts and attack you? Cuz i heard they were vicious little things. :P
I wouldnt consider mongoose pets since they arent domesticated. the one we had was great as a pup but when he grew up he became the dominant "MALE" and was very territorial. and yes they bite very hard (hard enough to bite all the way through your big toenail "OUCH")
yeah they bite hard as shit. Ours bit me after my brother and them blowdried him after his daily bath in the bathroom sink (remember how their scent glands cause them to have that super pungent nasty wild gamey smell?) They probably had the drier on too hot and burned his ass, cuz when I picked him up right after that he bit the shit outta my finger. It was so fast and I think it was more than one bite, the shit really hurt.
i mean, you had a ferrett right? Aren't mongooses and ferretts pretty much the same kind of animal, or cousins anyway? But yeah, to think he was still a baby when he bit me. I don't even want to think about what it feels like to have a full grown one tearing up that ass. But still, its not a badger or anything, where you'll get whole digits severed by those teeth. But you definitely gotta get them when they're babies, like any wild animal ('cept maybe pigs, which adjust easy).
the ferrett? He may not have laid into you that bad when he bit you, maybe he was just irritated. And that mongoose had no problem breaking through my skin. I mean, he'd pull his bites when he was playing, like a dog, so it wasn't even a nibble. But he wasn't playing that one time.
Mongoose are closer to the cats, civets&hyenas ( feline carnivores)While ferrets&weasels are closer to the dogs, bears&raccoons(canine carnivores). The fact that ferrets& mongoose resemble each other is owed to their similar diets& lifestyle and the fact that they are the only ones in their family tree that "still' resemble their ancient ancestors...
Must be nice to have such a unique pet;and to think the U.S. Gov't tried to exterminate them! We can't legally have the "Hawiian" or Indian mongoose here on the mainland;the closest thing available for us would be the cusimanse.
We had one back in 91. His mother probably got killed because the mongoose hole, which happened to be in the parking lot landscaping of the apt bldg I lived in at the time, was abandoned and we heard the squeaking noises. We nursed him with a eyedropper and later he ate cat food. Alas, pit bull got him at the beach though before he was 3 mo. He loved them grasshoppers. We called him Rikki Tikki, what did you name yours?
@MH2topspot Do they make good pets? The exact species is found where I live, and since ferrets are illegal here, I was wondering if they (mongoose) make good pets. Can you give me a bit of help here. Thanks.
@Antillespatriot10 no they dont make good pets. we had a rare chance at raising a 2 week old baby to full size, and it was a handful. a grown mongoose will never be tame and finding a lone pup is a rare thing. if you do happen to aquire a baby mongoose and plan to raise it, your on your own. we were refused help from the honolulu zoo and almost all veterinarians(all but one), so be prepared for the worst but expect the best.
If found young with eyes closed, bottle feed with goats milk. They will be tame through-out their life span ( 8-10 years) They are illegal in Hawaii, don't show them around. Get them spayed and neutered. Ask a vet or Doctor friend discreetly, will be expensive. Keep them confined, either in fenced ( bury fence, they dig) or inside. Free range mongoose pets get into trouble.
