I picked up the music for the other day. I decided to learn it after listening to it on here. Quite a wild piece to play. I am honored to be learning it.
I would love to have seen Stalin's face when he heard this... I must confess though that for me the later, mellower and less dissonant style has a kind of personal integrity that this doesn't. It's barbarbic expressionism such as a number of composers were writing at the time, he's going "me too". Mature Shostakovich is unmistakbly the man himself, even if he was chafing against the constraints of Soviet realism. Still good stuff though.
its maybe a little bit to difficult for me! ;)

One Word : How?

Was one of my favourites when I was fifteen years old.
As the fourth symphony.
Still think the adagio is a masterpiece, strongly reminiscent of the
opening of the fourth piano sonata by Scriabin.
Very beautiful music, liked it that you added the partiture.
Thanks!

Only thing wrong with this Sonata is that there isn't more of it. Amazing single-movement sonatas depress me.

It's so tantalizing to speculate about what would have happened if Shost continued in this direction over his career.
