Overacting bitch!. She sings like if she is crying and is trying not to. too much emotion in her delivery. I know Maria was very sad in that scene BUT the singing cannot be affected by that.

The nerds who say this is "the best opera ever" have never actually been to an actual opera and don't know anything about opera. Needless to say, actual operas run are much longer than what, 7-10 minutes or so? I'm not undermining this since I am actually a big fan of Uematsu and think he is a genius composer, but operas are like plays with singing. This obviously is not a full opera production. You kids need to see a performance of anything by Richard Wagner and really get your mind blown.

@mutinyinheav3n personally I feel that it's length is one of the finer aspects of it. it's short, sweet, and you could watch the whole thing during your lunch break. Also while Wagner was a genius I find some of his works to be overrated much like Shakespeare.

I don't know why people don't like her performance. Besides singing in standard operatic form, her timbre is remarkably close to the voice sample used for Celes in FFVI.

@todorov84 I think its the key the song is in that bothers a lot of people. I can't imagine it being in a comfortable range for a soprano as it's too low, and I have known many an alto who switch to head voice around C.

The Italian version is performed in the key of F if memory serves me. This arrangement is in the game's original key of D. The higher register probably would have helped with the female singer's voice, as in this key, the vibrato feels real forced.

@TenorZel D was good for the game's original soundtrack because when the voices are singing, there isn't a 4 part voicing. It's just one. So if the female voice went to low it would sound like a male and visa versa with the male's voice. It's awkward in real life, I guess, but I wouldn't know I don't sing operas! Haha, being a trying composer/arranger using older notation programs have served me with useless knowledge like this.

@TenorZel Maria's arias sound too low for sopranos because they were not written for that voice, they were written for mezzo-soprano voices which have a better low end for these arias. The italian version you talked about was arranged for a soprano.

That woman sounds like she's crying, which should be good for when you're singing a song about lost love, but she should sound more young and pure, not old and shaky and sobbing! The man for Draco sounds okay, though.

I agree completely that this performance is fantastic and top-notch. I enjoy it very much!

Having said that, it's still entirely possible for me to dislike this choice of singer for Maria. I don't mean there's anything wrong with lady herself or her performance, I just don't like the sound of her voice. That is simply my opinion.

Ok they cut off the Aria just before they got to the best, the most beautiful and powerful part of it. And it was perfect up to that point. ARGH! I would give both of my legs to hear the full version of that song performed on that high a level and I'm not even kidding.
