  • Oh, you sold the Martin ? What did you replace it wth ?

  • @InBy9OutBy5 With a Gold plated Conn with fantastic engravings. Must be one of the most beautiful bass saxes in the world. To nice to play on , in fact. But I use it for publicity shots.

  • Slap tonguing was a quite common technique of the period... check out Wiedoeft or the Brown Brothers.

Any effect can be overdone, but for the most it fits with the style.

  • I've played the bass sax and I understand how hard it is to play soft...this is an amazing performance by both musicians great job!!!

  • I love this, thanks for uploading!

  • Great job guys :) Little tongueing trouble but the performance was good, and I think I'm seeing a Roland Cube amp there ^^

  • Pure Awesomeness.

  • super

  • I made my dog dance with me while I listed to this. I love eet! :D

  • This is great.. this stuff is fun to listen to !! thanks for uploading so we can enjoy it :)

  • great

  • AMAZING

  • 1 person disliked this because he saw the giant sax and thought it was fake :)

  • AWESOME. i play bari sax! ROCK SAXES!!! (and ukes) lol. Great job guys.!

  • Good fun. I need to woop my bass out and hook up with my picker friend and give this a go. Amp the Uke and play in a bigger room with losts of people and the mix would be great. The folks would love it , too. Thanks.

  • hey, what was that flutter you did at 2:50? What's that called and what does it do?

  • where can you find the sheet music?

  • I love this : ) I just love the low register. :) thats why i play bari.

  • Sounds great. next time use your knowledge of 1920s music , and just sit the Uke player closer to the camera/ mic to compenstate for the volume difference !

  • why he use a slaptunging all's time

  • am fascinated by the studio behind

  • Good job by both. Very good soloing by the sax. Unfortuately the slap tongueing sound, whether caused by electronics processing or not, is very annoying.

  • It was a problem, with the tongueing. In order to play in balance with the uke, I had to play very, very soft. So soft, that there was a risk that notes wouldn't speak on the big bass. So I needed to use tongue. I'm sorry that it didn't come out better.

  • Amazing!!

  • Amazing - this is really great! - Love it. Do you have any CD's recorded with similar stuff? Gonna check out your other vids now,

  • No sorry, we play on several Cds together, but that is in larger bands, Hein playing banjo and I alto sax or clarinet.

  • Great Duo!! Love the 20's vibe!!

  • Haha, thanks. I was jammin' to this, hahaha.

  • Record that, and let me hear!

  • Wow this is a great duet loved it

  • Wow I play both instruments! Does anyone have the sheet music to this???

  • Now there's a combo I never would've considered. Awesome.

  • Hire us fot all your parties!

    haha.

    Thanks

    BB

  • i like this alot but im not sure if its just poor sound quaulity or it you have really like explosive attacks on notes with is weird to me

  • This may be related to the audio compression I thought I heard. Upon a sax note's attack, a circuit kicks in to reduce volume temporarily. This also contributes to the uke being buried in strange way. That's my theory anyway.

So a compressor might accentuate the sax-attax, but it should not be applied to the entire mix, so this could maybe be done better with 2 mics, applying compression to sax only.

If I didn't love this, I wouldn't even mention this.

    An engineer type

  • Nice

  • in my face

  • Superb, a joy to listen to. I play the ukulele but appreciate both parts here.

  • Very nice sound!!! Ver nice duet!!!!

  • great vid

  • I have to say, this is great. I play string bass, can't say I'm any good, but this is fun stuff to listen to. This video alone really sparked my interest in the bass sax.

  • Being good or not in music is relative. There are no absolute goals like in sports. Besides musical growth is everlasting.

    Thanks for listening.

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • That's right, once you think you've mastered an instrument there's always something new to learn about it.

I've only been playing for 14 / 15 years now (Bert has a couple years more experience with the saxophone than me) and I'm teaching people well over 70, yes 70, new techniques / sounds on the saxophone.

I have a lot to learn about the saxophone still.

  • @SirKareth hey man, give it time, if you keep playing it, you will be surprised by how good you get. it took me 12 years until i started to notice i actually sounded awsome

  • real amazing, it fits perfectly together. A small instrument, and big, plays great together. good video.

  • Bert, I love all of your videos!!!!! The bass sax will never die, and hopefully some day I'll have one of my own also!

  • Thanks, bass sax is so much fun, when I was first asked to play one, I had to rent one and was immediatly addicted.

  • im too poor to play it because its hard to find but im be able too someday right now i just play tuba

  • Lots of fun hearing this one!

Nice work guys! Luvit! 5 STARS!

    RagJazzMonkey Tom

  • Hey Tom,

Thanks for listening! I enjoy videos also very much.

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • adrian rollini!

  • The contrast in size is hilarious. Oh, and it sounds great, too. Good work, gents. =D

  • Um...how did my two favorite instruments find there way onto my computer screen at the same time? This is some crazy and wonderful experience! :)

  • The idea came from the fact that both instruments are vintage of the brand Martin. We just wanted to try how they would work together.

  • I know Bert since long time. I am his freelance banjo player. I felt in love with the uke too, since a year.

  • Hi, I'm looking for original song Happy Feet , if You have this, please, share me it.

    thx.

  • sassy bax, dude.

  • Hein - That is great. I haven't heard a bass sax since I heard Vito Musso play one NYC's In Basin Street in the early 1960s. You need a great set of lungs. Bert should has them. Also, very nice uke chords. Coincidentally I just returned from visiting our daughter in HIlversum. Sorry I missed a meeting. It would have been fun and a learning experience for me. Ed

  • When you are again in Holland, you are welcome. Happyly for the uke you need quik hands and the lungs are for Bert.

  • this song is great

  • great video, such a happy song

    :-)

  • Sweet!!

  • Thank you.

  • Yeah, that would be great, better than our ugly faces, haha.

    Thanks for listening,

    Bert B

  • Great vid!

I always knew the ukulele was a versatile little beast but who know the bass sax was too?

  • Bert: Dont pay any attention to that 'nattering nabob of negativism'. My granddaughter and I enjoyed this one, as much as we do all the previous ones. Keep it up so I can get my days started on a positive note. Best regards Lee

  • The dude blew a 1921 Martin bass saxophone, like you could have read. It was the last video we made with it, since it is sold. Bought a conn bass sax back to replace this one.

  • I think mister hytrees has many friends.

  • That was fun! Thanks, guys.

  • I've loved the combination of bass sax with plectrum banjo ever since I first heard Delirium Tremolo (Tom Stuip). I play plectrum banjo but also ukulele and I'd love to jam with you. And with Hein ofcourse. :)

  • That can be organized, you're welcome.

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • Great sound together!

  • What a combination! Clearly the way of the future!

  • I'm open for any uku player to accompany him/her. It's a lot of fun and since a week I own another bass sax that makes it easier to play softly.

  • ANY uku player? I'll have to remember that, because this sounds great!

    Heel leuk. Bedankt!

  • Oh yes, why not? In fact, I'm open for experiments with any musical combinations.

  • Like the mouse and the elephant playing together, sais the mouse:"What a noise are we making"!

Thanks Bert for the video. Hein
