I actually thought of doing just that. Sort of a sneaking up and shot from the bushes video. But, I decided to add the first part in keeping with the other videos I've got similar to this since I was focusing on the "job" aspect rather than the fiction aspect. You've got a very good eye and thoughts on video. Keep it up.
The whole BK persona expressed in their ads is, to say the least, a bit offbeat and stand-offish. I think most clowns I've seen lean toward the scary side too. Yet this fellow dutifully does his job and stands there and waves, alll daayyyy lonnggggg. A tough job to handle.
Clowns are scary. Lon Chaney said, "There's nothing funny about a clown in the moonlight." Lou Jacobs was the first "traditional" clown: white face, big mouth, red hair on the sides (Bozo, Ronald McDonald take their style from him). Emmet Kelly was the hobo clown. Russian Bim Bom was the revolutionary and executed by the Cheka for his satire. Oleg Popov (one of my favorites) was existential. BTW American Clowns do not paint on an upper lip. Tradition. European clowns have an upper lip.
Popov (78) is still performing. He won the Golden Clown of Monte Carlo award (the highest award a clown can win). I saw Popov perform with the Moscow Circus (my clown school class went to see him in Boston). There was a big slanted string with a huge ball coming down it. Popov stood frozen staring at it (deer in the headlights). It came closer and closer. Would it hit him? 10 minutes it edged down. At the last possible second he ducked. Don't know why, but it was hilarious. The audience roared.
I just looked Popov up. There's a YT vid of him doing a picnic with the spotlight acting as the picnic blanket. A true artist, his work is full of sublime inference. I also like his personal goal about spreading joy, not just laughter. He's the same age as my Dad and still out there spreading his brand of joy. He gets many kudos from me too.
Duh! I didn't think to check YouTube. I'm watching videos of his right now. Probably the most famous clown of the 20th century and relatively few Americans even know who he is. Honored with the highest honors the world over. You're right he was all about joy, not necessarily laughter. Another routine I saw him do moments after the one I described above had the audience in tears. Silent, all about a lonely man finding a flower, taking care of it, but it still wilted. Cycle of life. Brilliant.
Just put a link to that video in the sidebar. There's another of him doing his dentist routine. (I hope the dentist you work for doesn't use Popov's technique.) This was a routine I did at one point (alternated doing both dentist and patient). Made my own giant tooth from a white washcloth, dyed red at the bottom.
I always ask permission before I video anyone, and while speaking with this guy I asked how he liked what he was doing. He said it was no problem and he thought it was fun.
haha look weird

I had never heard of Bim Bom or Oleg Popov before. Now I'm going to have to research them for myself. Thanks for the trivia Yvette.
