I agree, first thing I noticed about that John Mayer song, I'm a long time fan of Satch...how did this slip by him? My guess was he allowed John Mayer to do it, but it's doubtful. However, Coldplay did seriously rip him off and it didn't take a degree in music theory to figure it out.
I'd love to know how you've got your amp set up and what effects you're running. I've got the same amp. It's a very nice amp, but I can't get anywhere near the same tone playing my American Standard Strat. :-/
I reckon you cant get the same tone because you have a totaly different guitar. He has dual humbucker pickups and I assume you're running the stock three single coil setup or something similar. Try throwing in a stacked coil or modding for a humbucker, that might get you the tone you're after.
His guitar has humbuckers, and Strats don't have any humbuckers, unless you added one in. Humbuckers will give you a thicker and warmer sound than single coils.
knowing the difference is not going to change your life so just go and buy a $50 guitar from sears and leave the good stuff for the professionals. lol

I have ther avt100! they are amazing amps! especially the clean channel put the gain at 1 then buy a boss metal zone then put the gain on the pedal full and prepare to dominate!
